Chapter 1

Skye's POV

I never once imagined that you could feel attached and in love with someone you barely even know.

I don't know about others, but that was currently my case.

I stood steadily and silently on the tree branch as I looked at the man who got my heart beating fast. He was talking with a bunch of guys, laughing with them about something that I couldn't quite decipher.

He had slick black hair and earthy green eyes, and even from far away I could tell that he's gorgeous to look at. My mate. The reason for my surging desire.

I could instantly tell that he's a werewolf from his smell. This was my first time seeing a werewolf up front, I didn't even know that such creatures would have mixed with the human race.

This part of the world...it was new to me. And I'm only here for one reason and one reason only, and that is to see who my mate is. The person the God's have chosen to be my other half.

I've been waiting for him for a long time, and now that I know who he is, I'm not planning on letting him go.

One way or another, I'll have him stuck by my side, forever.

I was just watching them, smiling peacefully as I stared at his face, but then out of nowhere, a woman latched into him, holding his arms that made me seeth from anger.

How dare that woman touch what's mine! I really wish I could burn her right here and now so I could watch her perish for touching him.

But unfortunately, I can't.

"Skye! Wake up! Skye…" A voice suddenly rang in my head.

I groggily opened my eyes only to see my cousin Freya looking at me with a concerned look on her face.

"Skye, are you okay?" She asked as she helped me get up from bed. "I knew we shouldn't have done this. Grandma is going to be mad if she knows you Soul Wandered for your mate."

She continued to rattle, but my mind was preoccupied with the thought of my mate being with another woman right now. How infuriating!

"Freya, please stop speaking, you're making my head ache with your yammering." I complained, massaging my temples.

"Ok, sorry," She quieted down and sniffled while looking particularly scared. I get why she's scared since what we did could get us punished severely.

I just really wanted to know who my mate is since everyone I know around my age already has their mate by their side.

Even Freya who is only older than me by two years has found her mate at an early age.

So I had only one option left, and that was to do a Soul Wander, where my spirit escapes my body and travels to the place where my mate is.

I thought it was going to be easy, but I didn't think it would require so much energy, even till now I could still feel the ringing in my ears after I woke up, and my energy, depleting.

"So did you see your mate?" She asked, her curiosity obviously laced in her words.

"Yeah," I dryly replied.

"Why do you look sad? Aren't you happy that you can finally be with your mate?" I staggered in my feet as I forced myself to get up.

I looked her in the eyes, and hesitated if I should say it to her.

"I saw him, but…he's…"

"He's what?"

"He's not from our kind…he's…he's a werewolf," I told the truth, and her eyes instantly bulged. I would too if I was her since it's totally uncanny for our race to be mated with a land creature.

We Phoenix's soar the sky and envelope it with our might and blazing fiery form, while werewolves on the other hand, like the old jokes I've heard as a child, were the dogs of the land. But I couldn't care less, a mate is a mate, no matter what form or race.

"What! How can that happen?! It must be a mistake. We aren't even allowed to leave Hephalis. How do you think you can go to your mate at this point when he's living amongst the humans and other land creatures." Freya spoke with an exaggerated look, as if she was the one who's carrying my problems!

Like why does she have to be more dramatic than me? Like honestly, for heaven's sake! I'm the one who'll have to face this problem, not her.

"Will you stop that? I'm already torn as it is. And no, I'm certain that he's my mate. I could feel the pull between us." I spoke, as I stared at my wooden window, looking at the green scenery in front of me.

Hephalis was my home, the sanctuary of my kind. A place that no human could ever reach.

I've never once left, or tried to leave here, but this time, I think I might have to. For my own happiness, so that I can finally be with my mate.

The person the God's have chosen for me to spend the rest of my life with.

"So what are you going to do now?" I contemplated for a while, and tried to think.

After a few minutes, I heaved a sigh and looked at Freya straight into her eyes, and with a resolute voice, I said, "I'm going to get out of here."

"Are you out of your mind?!" She shrieked, looking at me up and down as if I was deranged or something.

"What else am I supposed to do?" I replied back, with the same amount of intensity as her.

"I–I don't know. But the elders will surely not approve of it." She muttered.

"They won't know. And you won't tell a soul Freya. Promise me." She was taken aback by what I said, and it was clear that she also wasn't going to support me on this one.

But I didn't know what else to do. She was my only chance right now. If my parents knew that I Soul Wandered, and that my mate is a werewolf, then they would never let me leave anymore, and would probably force me to marry an unmated man. And I refuse to live a life like that!

"Please Freya, help me. Please, just this once." I pleaded, reaching her hand and holding it tightly, as my vision started to blur, tears threatening to escape my eyes.

"Skye…"

"Please Freya," I asked, my voice breaking as I hung my head down.

"Fine, just—be sure that you know exactly what you're doing." She finally caved in and hugged me, soothing me as tears cascaded down my face.

"When are you planning on leaving?" She asked, pulling away as she gazed at me with a serious expression.

"Tonight."
