Chapter 6

Sonnet got distracted for a moment. As soon as she raised her gaze again, Maxwell’s handsome face appeared right before her eyes.

Sonnet leaned back instinctively. However, a large hand supported her waist.

After that, her legs got lifted off the ground as Maxwell carried her bridal style.

“Hey…What are you doing?” Sonnet shouted out.

“Mrs. Wilson told me to carry you like this before we sleep,” Maxwell said in an innocent tone.

Sonnet immediately tried calming her frantic heart down. He was just like a child that was listening to an adult’s instructions. He would not understand what Mrs. Wilson really meant!

While Sonnet was pondering upon this, Maxwell had already placed her lightly on the bed.

“Alright, you can sleep now…” Sonnet’s words were interrupted by Maxwell’s subsequent actions.

He leaned down and caged her between his arms.

She tilted her head to the side and was just about to push him off her when she felt a slight damp sensation on her face. Maxwell’s tall build then moved away from her.

“Mrs. Wilson told me that I must kiss you before we sleep.”

Maxwell laughed happily. He then lay down beside her on the bed.

Sonnet was stunned. She then clutched her face.

She rubbed her heated face and got off the bed. She then told Maxwell, “Cough cough, I’m going to take a bath.”

“Oh,” Maxwell responded softly. He seemed extremely sleepy.

Sonnet grabbed her clothes and headed into the bathroom. Maxwell turned around on the bed and looked at the door of the bathroom.

A blur silhouette was visible in the frosted glass door. He stared at the figure and touched his lips…

Maxwell seemed to be asleep when Sonnet came out of the bathroom after showering.

She held the clothes that she had changed out of and headed to the laundry room. She was fiddling with the controls to the washing machine when a low voice suddenly rang out, “Young Miss.”

Sonnet was shocked. She turned around while clasping her chest. She then saw Jim standing behind her.

He was dressed in a shirt. A few of his buttons were unbuttoned and half of his chest was visible.

Sonnet frowned and leaned back against the washing machine instinctively. “What’s going on?”

“I passed by after showering. I heard some noises coming from the laundry room, so I came over to take a look. It turns out that you’re doing the laundry,” Jim said with a chuckle.

“Shall I help you out?” He asked while leaning over and reaching out to press down on the button on the washing machine.

Sonnet was stuck between his chest and the washing machine when he leaned down towards her.

A faint fragrance filled Sonnet’s nose.

It should be the scent of a luxury cologne. However, Sonnet felt that the scent smelt worse than the scent of Maxwell’s body shampoo!

The muscles on his chest softly brushed against Sonnet’s arm. Sonnet’s heart lurched as she pushed him away from her with her elbow reflexively. “I can do it myself. Go to bed. I don’t need your help.”

“Alright, Young Miss.” There was a disappointed expression on Jim’s face after Sonnet rejected his help. He wished her a good night and left.

Sonnet stared at his silhouette and frowned.

This servant seemed rather weird…

Sonnet slept on the sofa that night. The next morning, she greeted Mrs. Wilson and headed to the hospital.

Her father’s treatment would begin in the next couple of days. She was worried that Mason would do something to him and planned to change her father’s general physician.

She walked into the ward and was asking the care worker about her father’s condition when a tall and plump woman walked into the ward without knocking on the door.

“Sonnet Turner?” She asked out loud.

Sonnet gave her a once over in surprise. “Who are you?”

“Smack!”

The crisp sound of a slap rang out through the ward.

Sonnet’s head turned to the side due to the impact of the slap. She was momentarily stunned before she returned to her senses.

She clasped her stinging face and glared at the plump woman angrily. “Why did you hit me?!”

“I wanted to hit you!” The plump woman raised her hand and tried to hit her again.

Sonnet moved her head to the side to dodge her attack. She then grabbed hold of the woman’s arm and pushed her with all her might.

The plump woman took a few steps back after Sonnet pushed her. She then held the wall for support before standing upright.

“You treacherous mistress! How dare you scam my husband and take several decades’ worth of our savings to pay for your darn father’s hospital fees? You’re truly an immoral person!”

The plump woman started stamping her feet and thumping her chest as she shouted out loud.

The people around the ward came over to watch the scene. They all pointed at Sonnet and started gossiping.

“You’re making things up! Sonnie isn’t that type of person!” Myles, who was lying on the bed, shouted out loud in shock.

“Why isn’t she that type of person? I have evidence. Look here! It’s a photo of her in bed with my husband!”

The plump woman took out her phone and clicked on a photo. She then showed it to the crowd surrounding them.

The people surrounding them started gossiping at once.

“I’ve always found it weird. I heard that her father needed 74 thousand dollars for his treatment. They’re from the village, so how do they have so much money? It turns out that she got all that money by being a mistress!”

“It’s likely that this is the case. Otherwise, why would his wife come to the hospital to look for her?”

“Tsk tsk tsk, we really can’t judge a book by its cover. She’s a pretty girl, but she loses all principles when it comes to money.”

Sonnet felt needle-like gazes piercing her face.

However, she raised her head, stood upright, and held her chin up high.

She did not bother to talk to the plump woman. She simply took out her phone and called the police right away. “Is this the police? There’s a woman causing trouble here. Hurry up and come over. I’m beside bed 24 in the oncology department of Central Hospital.”

The plump woman jumped up in rage after hearing her call the police. “How dare you call the police? Sure, when the police are here, they’ll see for themselves how a treacherous mistress acts and speaks!”

Sonnet said coldly, “Your photo is edited. You claimed that I scammed your husband’s savings. Your husband must have a transaction record. When the police get here and start investigating, everything will be in the clear. By then, I won’t agree to make a compromise once you’ve been charged for malicious slander and assault.”

The plump woman evidently felt guilty after hearing what she said. However, she continued keeping her cool.

“You’re way too sly. It turns out that you’ve been waiting for me over here. It’s no wonder you always asked my husband to pay you in cash!”

Sonnet sneered and said, “I won’t bother talking to you. Let’s talk after the police gets here.”

After speaking, she swept her gaze towards the patients and their family members surrounding them. “Fellow patients, can you please not disturb my father while he’s resting?”

Everyone gradually dispersed.

The plump woman’s phone rang. She pretended to pick up her phone. A frantic expression appeared on her face as she pointed at Sonnet and said, “Hmph, I have some urgent matters to attend to right now. I’ll let you go today, but this isn’t over. Just wait for it!”

She walked out in a hurry while speaking.

Sonnet did not stop her. After the woman left, she asked the care worker to look after her father. She then left the ward.

She secretly followed the plump woman and saw her walking around a corner. She then made a call. “Miss Yale, it isn’t easy to deal with that woman. She made a police report, so I had no choice but to leave…Oh, oh, alright…I won’t come here anymore.”

Sonnet frowned. Who was Miss Yale? What kind of grudge did she have against her? Why would she harm her like that?
