Chapter 8

Sonnet kept her father company in the hospital till late in the evening. The hospital did not ask her for anything else. Sonnet asked the care worker to call her anytime if anything happened, then she returned to the Brooks household.

The sky was already dark when she returned to the Brooks household. She had not eaten anything, and she was so hungry that her stomach grumbled loudly.

She went to the kitchen to look for something to eat. Suddenly, a low voice rang out once again. “Young Miss, you haven’t had dinner, right?”

Sonnet turned around and saw Jim standing behind her.

There was an apron around his waist. He looked like a good househusband.

He chuckled and said, “Sit down, Young Miss. I’ve left some dishes for you. I’ll go get them for you now.”

Sonnet was not used to letting someone else serve her that way. “I’ll do it myself.”

He pressed down on her shoulders and pushed her to the dining table. He then sat her down. “It’s my job to serve you, Young Miss.”

He even winked at her while speaking.

Goosebumps rose across Sonnet’s skin. She coughed twice and said, “Thank you.”

He smiled radiantly at her and filled her plate with food.

The food was warm, and Jim had even prepared all of Sonnet’s favorite dishes.

Jim sat down opposite Sonnet while she ate. He supported his head with his arm and watched her. Sonnet found it rather difficult to swallow her food.

“If there’s nothing else, you can rest.”

“I still need to do the dishes.”

“It’s alright. I can wash these few bowls on my own.”

Jim’s gaze landed on Sonnet’s hand. His voice was gentle and lilting as he said, “Young Miss, you have such fine and delicate hands. How can you do the dishes? I can’t bear to let you do that.”

Sonnet almost spit out a mouthful of her food.

She put down her bowl and got up. “I’m full.”

“Oh no, what happened to your face, Young Miss?” Jim exclaimed.

Sonnet was stunned. She caressed her face and recalled how that plump woman had slapped her this morning.

She had forgotten about it after everything that had happened afterwards. The swelling on her face had yet to subside.

After pondering upon it for a while, she returned to her senses and saw Jim bending down to stare at the left side of her face. There was a look of pity on his face.

“Who bullied you, Young Miss? I’ll help you confront them!”

“Oh, it was a misunderstanding. We cleared things out.” Sonnet did not want to talk too much about it.

He stared at her gently and pushed her down to make her sit down. “I’ll put some ointment on your face. That way, the swelling might go down by tomorrow.”

Maxwell walked down the staircase at this point.

Displeasure flashed across his gaze when he caught sight of this scene.

He walked down the stairs with heavy footsteps and attracted Sonnet and Jim’s gazes.

He walked in front of Jim and said, “I want to drink milk.”

A hint of annoyance flashed across Jim’s gaze as he replied monotonously,” Alright, Young Master.”

He went into the kitchen to heat up some milk. Maxwell turned around to look at Sonnet.

Sonnet’s skin was fair and delicate. The few purplish streaks across her face were rather obvious.

A hint of pity appeared in his gaze as he reached out to caress her face.

Sonnet was stunned.

He instantly returned to his sense. A dumb smile appeared on his face as he said, “It won’t hurt after I touch it, wifey.”

Sonnet smiled and said, “I’m alright. It’s just a small injury. It’s nothing.”

A small injury…

How many times had this woman gotten hurt?

Maxwell’s heart hurt for her.

“Young Master, here’s your milk.” Jim walked over and held a cup of milk between Maxwell and Sonnet.

Maxwell frowned and took the glass of milk. He took a sip and shouted, “It’s burning!”

“It won’t burn if you let it cool down for a while, Young Master.”

“Cool it down for me!” Maxwell looked at him with his face puffed out in anger.

Jim was extremely impatient. However, he could not express his annoyance in front of Sonnet. He had no choice but to suppress his rage and cool down the milk.

After a while, he took the glass of milk over. Maxwell took a sip and said, “It’s cold!”

“Didn’t you ask me to cool it down, Young Master?”

“It’s too cold! I want warm milk!”

Jim entered the kitchen once again.

Sonnet patted Maxwell’s shoulders after watching his antics. “Stop being mischievous. You keep making things hard for him.”

“I must drink milk that isn’t too hot or too cold,” Maxwell said intently.

Jim took the warm milk out. Maxwell lost his grip when he took the glass of milk from him.

“Splash!”

The milk spilled all over Jim.

“Young Master!” Jim shouted out furiously.

Maxwell hid behind Sonnet and said, “Wifey, he wants to hit me!”

Sonnet patted his hand and looked at Jim. “He didn’t mean to do it. Don’t be angry.”

The angered expression on Jim’s face gradually vanished. He then smiled and said, “How would I dare to get angry at Young Master?”

Maxwell jumped into the kitchen and took the boiled egg that Jim had just cooked. He left the kitchen and held Sonnet’s hand. “Wifey, let’s go upstairs. I’ll roll this egg across your face!”

He rolled his eyes at Jim before leaving and told him, “Clean up the mess on the ground.”

Jim was infuriated when he saw both of them holding hands.

He placed a clenched fist on the table and muttered softly, “Darn fool, let’s see how long your relationship with your wife will last!”

Maxwell pushed Sonnet down on the bed and made her sit down as soon as she entered their room. He started rolling the egg across her face.

Although he was a fool that talked loudly all the time, he was extremely meticulous and careful while massaging her face.

“Who bullied you, wifey? I’ll send Ultraman over to beat them up!” Maxwell said while massaging her face.

Sonnet could not help but burst out into laughter. “Can you give Ultraman commands?”

“Of course, I’m very capable!” Maxwell stood upright and puffed out his chest.

Sonnet laughed and replied, “Oh, you really are capable!”

——

Late at night, a man and a woman were tangled together in the sheets inside a luxurious hotel room.

Suddenly, someone’s phone rang. It rang for some time before the man unwillingly picked up the phone. “Why are you calling me in the middle of the night? Don’t you know that it’s a sin to disrupt someone else while they’re having fun?”

A man’s low voice rang out from the other end of the phone. “Make sure to prepare the best ward in Westfield Hospital for a patient.”

“We don’t have any left. The VIP rooms are all full.”

“I don’t care. Empty a room for me.”

“Sir, you’re making things difficult for me…”

“Would I look for you if it weren’t a difficult task?” The man raised his voice.

The man nodded at once. “Alright, when will the patient be here?”

“In the next couple of days.”

“What kind of patient is it?”

“Gastric cancer. You know what to do.”

“Of course. We’ll provide the patient with the best doctors and nurses. We’ll give the patient the best treatment as well. How can there be delays when it comes to your friend, Sir?”

“Also, there’s something else…”

The man on the other end of the call said something in a low voice. The man ignored his girlfriend and nodded several times.

——

Sonnet woke up in the morning. She was just about to have breakfast when she received a call from her father’s care worker. “Miss Turner, hurry up and come to the hospital. Your father insists on getting discharged. He won’t even have breakfast!”

She hung up on the call and set out to head to the hospital.

Jim caught up with her and asked, “Young Miss, where are you going? Shall I fetch you?”

Sonnet thought that it was a good idea, and so agreed.

Jim brought the car to an emergency brake as soon as the car left the residential area and turned onto the road.

Sonnet’s body lurched forward. She almost hit her head. “What happened?”

“It looks like someone’s here to cause trouble.” Jim opened the car door and got down from the car.

Sonnet followed him out the car. They saw an old man lying down beside the car.

Sonnet was about to walk up to him when Jim held her back and said, “Young Miss, we’d better not touch him. Otherwise, we won’t be able to deny anything if he blames us for doing something to him.”

He then raised his voice at the old man lying on the ground, “There’s a dashcam in our car. Don’t think about causing trouble! I’ll call the police over right now!”

He was about to call the police when Sonnet stopped him. “He isn’t trying to cause trouble.”
