Chapter 9

“How do you know?”

“He doesn’t seem to be feeling well.”

Sonnet walked to the old man’s side and observed him carefully. The old man was clutching his chest. There was a pained expression on his face.

“How are you, Sir?” Sonnet bent down and asked him.

“Med…medicine…” The old man stuttered.

Sonnet heard what he said clearly. “Where’s your medicine?”

“In my…pocket…”

Sonnet immediately reached out to put her hand in his pocket. There was a small pill bottle in the pocket of his shirt.

She recognized this type of medicine. It was a type of cardiac arrest medicine. In critical situations, placing one of these pills under one’s tongue could save one’s life.

She immediately took out a pill and fed it to the old man. The old man’s complexion gradually improved, and Sonnet helped him sit up.

After a while, the old man seemed to be in a better condition. He smiled at Sonnet and thanked her, “Thank you, miss. If it weren’t for you, I would’ve lost my life here today!”

Sonnet smiled and said, “It’s nothing. Shall we send you to the hospital?”

The old man shook his head and said, “It’s alright. I’ll call my grandson and ask him to come over to fetch me.”

Jim told Sonnet, “Young Miss, let’s go. Let him wait for his grandson on his own.”

Sonnet shook her head and said, “He’s of old age. It won’t be good if anything happens. Let’s wait for a while.

There was nothing urgent on her father’s side, so she decided to keep the old man company until his family arrived.

Luckily, the old man’s grandson arrived in ten minutes.

A man got down of a luxurious Bentley. He was dressed in a business suit. He seemed well-mannered and presentable.

After finding out that Sonnet had helped the old man, the old man’s granson handed her his namecard and said, “Nice to meet you. I’m Hayden Gunn. It’s a pleasure.”

Sonnet accepted his namecard with both hands. She saw the title on his namecard. He was the president of Westfield Medical Corporation.

“May I know your name?” Hayden asked.

“My name is Sonnet Turner.”

“Nice to meet you, Miss Turner. You saved my grandfather’s life today, and I’ll always be grateful. Call me if there’s anything that you ever need my help with,” Hayden said.

Sonnet nodded with a smile. She then put away his namecard.

When Sonnet arrived at the hospital, she asked Jim to go back. She then headed to her father’s ward straight away.

Myles lay on the bed with his eyes closed. He would not drink any water regardless of the care worker’s persuasion.

Sonnet sat down by his bed and held his hand. She asked gently, “Dad, what’s wrong?”

Myles turned over to face her. There was a pained gaze in his eyes. “Sonnie, let me get discharged. Let’s not stay in this hospital anymore.”

“What’s wrong, dad? Is anything the problem?” Sonnet was extremely shocked.

Myles looked into her eyes and said, “Miss Yale came over and asked us to transfer to another hospital. She doesn’t want you to affect her husband’s career.”

Sonnet’s face darkened. She got up and walked away.

However, Myles grabbed hold of her wrist and shouted out, “Sonnie, don’t look for her! I don’t want you to get hurt again and again because of me!”

“Dad, she doesn’t have the right to decide whether we get to stay here or not!” Sonnet said coldly.

Myles shook his head and said, “I don’t feel like staying here anymore.”

“Dad!” Sonnet raised her voice. “Didn’t you promise me that you’d continue living well?”

“Yes, I promised that I’d continue living well. There are plenty of hospitals out there. I can receive treatment anywhere. We can go to other hospitals.”

“Central Hospital is the hospital with the most experienced oncology specialists!”

Myles’ eyes moisteend as he said, “Sonnie, I’ve made things difficult for you for many years. I don’t want you to be humiliated and hurt by those people because of this incident. I’ll leave the outcome of my illness up to fate. The outcome will be the same no matter where I receive treatment.”

“How is that the same? It’s different…”

“Don’t talk about this anymore, Sonnie. If you insist on making me stay in this hospital, I’d rather die!” Myles interrupted her. He then closed his eyes and ignored her.

Sonnet teared up as she looked at the determined expression on her father’s face.

She knew her father’s personality well. One could not change his mind once he had his heart set on doing something.

She understood how her father felt as well. He always felt that he was making things hard for his daughter. Thus, he thought that the best way for him to protect his daughter was by leaving this hospital.

She sat beside her father’s bed silently for a while and went outside to call Lindy. “My dad insists on getting transferred to another hospital. Do you know if there are any other hospitals out there that’d suit him?”

“Westfield Hospital is the hospital with the best treatment for cancer in Harbor City. However, it’s a private hospital, so it might be a little more expensive.”

Sonnet was stunned as she recalled the namecard that she had received today. Hayden was the president of Westfield Medical Corporation.

“Does Westfield Hospital belong to Westfield Medical Corporation?” She asked.

“Yeah, Westfield Corporation belongs to the Gunn family, one of the four largest families in Harbor City. They own a medical corporation that consists of Westfield Hospital, Westfield Medicine, and Westfield Medical Factory.” Lindy worked as an entertainment reporter. She was rather knowledgeable in this area.

“I got acquainted with someone called Hayden Gunn today.”

“Wow! He’s one of Harbor City’s “Big Four”. How did you get to know him?” Lindy shouted out in exaggeration at the other end of the call.

Sonnet recounted everything that had happened, and Lindy shouted out in excitement, “This is what you get in return for doing a good deed! Call him. With his approval Uncle Myles can get hospitalized in Westfield Hospital at once!”

“However, I can’t afford to get my father hospitalized in such a high-ranking private hospital…”

“You can try first. He might agree to let you pay the hospitalization fees in settlements or give you a discount. If that doesn’t work, you can work with him. Your dad can stay in a regular hospital, and you can hire professionals from Westfield Hospital to perform his surgery and devise a treatment plan. It’s really hard to hire specialists from Westfield Hospital.”

Lindy’s words convinced Sonnet.

She had never thought of taking advantage of someone else, but perhaps she could try asking him for help.

She planned out what to say and dialed the number of the namecard…

——

After having lunch, Sonnet completed the discharge procedures for Myles.

She recalled everything that had happened today. It all felt like a dream.

Not only did Hayden Gunn, one of Harbor City’s “Big Four”, listen to her request patiently, but he even invited her father to get hospitalized in Westfield Hospital. He gave her a huge discount and even agreed to let her pay the hospital fees in installments.

He asked about Myles’ condition and shared that his condition was not considered severe in Westfield Hospital.

His words gave Sonnet hope. For her father’s sake, she accepted someone else’s favor for the first time in her life.

Sonnet ran into Caitlyn after paying the bill.

“Tsk tsk tsk, isn’t it Sonnet Turner? Outstanding talents always understand current affairs. It seems like you’ve finally thought it through and decided to get your father discharged from the hospital.” Caitlyn spoke to Sonnet in a sarcastic tone in front of everyone, “Back then, I suggested paying you a compensation for your father’s hospitalization fees, but you wouldn’t accept it. You can’t blame me for that.”

The few doctors walking beside Caitlyn tried to butter up against her and added, “Tsk tsk, are there such foolish people in the world? She’s already too poor to afford her father’s hospitalization fees, and she’s still way too prideful to ask for help!”

“That’s right! She’s poor because she’s as stubborn as a rock! Poor people deserve to be poor for their entire lives! Right, Sonnet, I haven’t asked you which hospital your father would be transferring to. Given your conditions, you must only be able to afford to let him get hospitalized in a hospital in the county…”

Caitlyn was stunned when she suddenly looked behind Sonnet before she finished speaking.

Sonnet turned around and saw a tall and sturdy figure walking over to her.
