Chapter 5

Sonnet unclenched her fists after walking into the distance.

She knew Jessie’s personality pretty well. She feared people that were more powerful than her, but enjoyed bullying those below her. She was vain and prideful as well.

Jessie would not dare to do anything for now since she had threatened to expose how she had helped her get into medical school.

However, she could not put her guard down. She still had to protect her children and father. She could not let anyone hurt them.

She bought some fruits back and saw that her father was in stable condition. She then gave the care worker some reminders before leaving the hospital.

She did not return to the Brooks household. Instead, she went to the house that belonged to her best friend, Lindy Jackson.

The door opened after she knocked on it. Before she could say anything, a small figure pounced over and hugged her legs.

Sonnet lowered her head and stared into a pair of large, dark and bright eyes. Her heart softened at once.

“Mom, why did you only come for us now? I missed you so much!”

Sonnet forgot all about her troubles after hearing her sweet voice.

Sonnet knelt down and took the small girl into her arms. She then asked, “Where’s your brother?”

“Brother is in his room.”

Sonnet brought her daughter to her son’s room. She pushed the door open and saw her son’s side profile. He was extremely silent.

He was reading with a mask covering half of his voice.

He turned around when he heard the noise. His large, dark eyes resembled those of Luna’s. However, there was an uncharacteristic quietness in his gaze.

Sonnet smiled and walked over to his side. “Jaybie, what book are you reading?”

Jay Turner closed the book. It was a medical book. “I still can’t understand much. However, I think I’ll slowly be able to understand the contents if I read it intently.”

Sonnet’s heart lurched in pain.

Her son had been intelligent since he was young. He learned how to read when he was two years old. Now that he was five, he could read books on his own.

He had always been quiet and mature. Ever since being diagnosed with leukemia, he wore a mask every day. He could no longer play outside either. He grew quieter–so quiet that he no longer seemed like a child at his age.

Jaybie stared into her eyes silently and said, “Mom, I’m doing pretty well in Aunt Lindy’s house. You should go to work if you’re busy. You don’t need to worry about us.”

The more sensible her children were, the more heartbroken Sonnet felt. She wrapped her arms tightly around him.

After chatting with the children for a while, Sonnet let them play among themselves. She then went to the kitchen to have a chat with Lindy.

“I told you that I’ll bring the children over once I marry into the family, but it seems like that won’t be possible for now,” she told Lindy.

“What’s wrong? Did the Brooks family wrong you in any way?” Lindy immediately asked her in a concerned tone.

“Nope.”

“Did that fool do something bad to you?”

Sonnet shook her head and said, “That fool is a pretty nice person. He’s as innocent as a child.”

“However, the Brooks family can’t find out that I have children for the time being. Therefore…”

“Leave the children here. My mom loves looking after them,” Lindy immediately said.

Lindy worked as an entertainment reporter in Harbor City after graduating from university. Her father passed away early. She then moved to Harbor City with her mother after getting a job.

Lindy’s mother, Sophia York, had been helping her look after her children for the past few days.

Sonnet smiled and wrapped her arms around her.

She kept her children company for a while before bidding them farewell. She then returned to the Brooks household.

A man greeted her as soon as she entered the courtyard.

He had a handsome face and fair skin. He had a tall build, and most importantly, there was an apron wrapped around his waist!

“Young Miss is back!” The man smiled extremely brightly. He looked cute, but it seemed like he had a wild side to him.

Sonnet was stunned.

“You must be tired, Young Miss. Hurry up and go in. I left some dishes for you!”

He held Sonnet’s hand intimately while speaking.

Sonnet avoided him and asked, “Who are you?”

“I’m the new servant that got sent over to look after Young Master and Young Miss. I’m in charge of preparing your food and transportation. My name is Jonathan White. You can just call me Jonas, Young Miss.”

“Who sent you over?”

“Old Master Brooks.”

At that moment, the sound of scolding rang out from within the house. “Mrs. Wilson, why don’t you retire? I’ll help you apply for a considerable amount of pension.”

Sonnet immediately ran into the house. Mrs. Wilson was standing with her head lowered. She was being scolded.

A woman dressed in a business suit was standing in front of Mrs. Wilson. Her hair was tied into a bun. She was speaking to her haughtily.

Two young maids were standing behind her.

Mrs. Wilson immediately waved her hands when she heard about her having to go into retirement. “It’s alright, I can still do well. I’ve taken care of Young Master for such a long time. Young Master is used to me looking after him!”

Sonnet walked up to her and asked, “And who are you?”

The woman looked at Sonnet and bowed down before her matter-of-factly. She then said, “Young Miss, I’m Lily Stone, the butler sent over by the Brooks family. From now onwards, I'm in charge of managing this household and looking after you and Second Young Master.”

After she finished speaking, two maids walked over and greeted her.

Sonnet nodded and looked at Lily, “Let Mrs. Wilson stay.”

“It isn’t appropriate for Mrs. Wilson to stay here anymore. She almost caused an accident just now!” Lily said coldly.

“Mrs. Wilson didn’t do it on purpose. She’ll be more careful in the future.”

Sonnet knew that Mrs. Wilson was close to being Maxwell’s mother. She had taken care of Maxwell for a long time. Therefore, she took her side and spoke for her.

However, Lily did not show her any respect. “Second Young Miss, I’m the butler of this household. I need to take responsibility for this household. It’s getting late. You’d better go to rest!”

She flashed a gaze at Jim while speaking. Jim walked over and pulled Sonnet away by her arm. He smiled at her cheerily and asked, “Second Young Miss, shall I help you upstairs?”

Sonnet avoided his touch with a cold expression on her face. She said in an even tone, “Even if you’re the butler of this household, you must respect your master’s opinion. You aren’t the master of this household, right?”

A look of rage flashed across Lily’s face. It vanished soon after.

“Since you insist on letting Mrs. Wilson stay, I’ll let her stay. However, if she causes any accidents, can you bear responsibility for it, Second Young Miss?”

“Of course! I’ll bear responsibility for everything!” Sonnet retorted at once.

Lily did not say anything. She left in a fit of rage.

Sonnet asked the other servants to get some rest. She then asked Mrs. Wilson, “What’s going on?”

Mrs. Wilson said, “The Brooks family must’ve heard about what Mr. Harrison and Yannis done. That’s why they’ve sent more people over.”

She sighed and said, “It was pretty nice when it was just the three of us living here. This place no longer feels like home after they joined.”

Sonnet felt that way as well.

She glanced at the stairwell and asked, “Where’s Maxwell?”

“Young Master is in his room. He finds them noisy.”

Sonnet chuckled and said, “I’ll look for him.”

She knocked on his door, but there was no response. She pushed on the door lightly and caught sight of Maxwell walking out of the bathroom after his shower. There was only a towel wrapped around his waist.

Sonnet’s heart skipped a beat. She averted her gaze at once.

He had the mental age of a child, but he had an excellent physique!

At that moment, she felt her face flush red and her heart race! It felt as if Maxwell had charmed her.

She had never felt this way even when she was still in love with Mason!

Maxwell noticed the embarrassed expression on Sonnet’s face. His lips curled up into a smile.

In the past, he hated women looking at him that way. However, somehow, he found the woman in front of him rather adorable.

A hint of mischief flashed across his gaze as he walked straight towards Sonnet.
