Chapter 2

Sonnet sat down by the bed.

It was her wedding night tonight. There would not be a wedding ceremony. No one congratulated her either.

The atmosphere was still and silent. She waited for her dumb husband to appear silently.

Suddenly, the door got pushed open. She raised her head and looked over instinctively.

The chauffeur, Mr. Harrison, who had fetched her over just now, rushed towards her in a drunken state.

“Second Young Miss, you’re so pretty. It’s such a pity that you married a fool! Let me show you some love. You’ll definitely be satisfied.”

He wrapped his arms around Sonnet and lowered his head to kiss her on her lips.

Sonnet pushed him off her with all her might and slapped him across his face. “Don’t come over! I’ll call for help if you come over again!”

“Call for help?” Mr. Harrison was fearless in his drunken state. “Let me tell you this. It’s useless even if you call for help! You’ll have to let me do as I wish tonight!”

He pounced over once again. He was extremely strong. He pushed Sonnet down on the bed harshly.

“Swoosh!”

Sonnet’s dress got torn apart.

Sonnet pushed him off her with all her might while turning her face away from him.

She saw a lamp on the bedside table. She then reached out her arm with all the force she could muster to grab hold of it.

However, she still needed to get a little bit closer…

“Keep it up, keep it up!”

Suddenly, the sound of clapping rang out.

Mr. Harrison paused. Sonnet turned around as well.

A man was standing at the end of the bed. They had no idea when he had appeared.

The man was dressed in a tuxedo. He was tall, and he had fair skin. He had a handsome face as well.

He had an angular face and a tall nose bridge. His lashes were long, and his eyes were bright.

However, there was an air of innocence in his gaze. He behaved like a child as well.

Sonnet’s heart lurched. Was this her dumb husband?

Mr. Harrison had an impatient expression on his face as he told the man, “Second Young Master, play outside!”

“I won’t go out! Fighting is fun! I want to play too!”

The man jumped over as he spoke. He then punched Mr. Harrison.

He was extremely strong. Mr. Harrison fell down on the bed due to the impact of his punch.

Sonnet regained her freedom. She jumped down the bed and ran outside at once.

When she ran to the door, she heard the sound of a belt hitting skin and the man’s shouts of pain.

She paused and turned around. Mr. Harrison was whipping the man with his belt. “Foolish thing, how dare you hit me?! I’ll beat you to death!”

A few red marks appeared on the man’s neck. He was tall and stoic, but he did not resist Mr. Harrison’s beatings at all. He wrapped his head in his arms and curled up in the corner without moving.

Sonnet felt slightly irked when she saw just how pitiful he was.

She reminded him of one of her students that had been tortured by his parents in the past.

She stopped walking. She secretly took out her phone and turned on the video function on her camera.

Mr. Harrison was still hitting him. “Let’s see if you’ll still dare to ruin things for me again. I’ll beat you to death! I’ll beat you to death!”

The man wrapped his arms around his head tightly as he resisted the pain silently. He gritted his teeth and remained silent.

Sonnet could not bear to watch it anymore. She put away her phone and took a few steps back to grab hold of the lamp.

“He doesn’t dare to do anything, but I do!” She shouted out before mustering the courage to smash the lamp against Mr. Harrison’s head.

Mr. Harrison fell to the ground and passed out before he realized what had happened.

Sonnet was momentarily stunned. It was her first time beating someone up.

However, she calmed down soon. She then knelt down to check on Mr. Harrison’s condition.

He had probably passed out. Luckily, he was not dead.

She thought about it before taking the belt from Mr. Harrison’s hands and tying his wrists behind his back.

A hint of shock flashed across the eyes of the man curled up in the corner when he saw her actions.

However, he lowered his gaze before Sonnet’s gaze landed on him. A fearful expression appeared on his face.

Sonnet’s heart softened when she saw the innocent and pitiful expression on his face.

Although the man was tall and stoic, she could tell from his actions and behavior that he still had the mental age of a child.

What kind of wealthy young master would get bullied by his subordinates?

She walked over and knelt down in front of the man. She spoke to him softly, “Don’t be afraid. I’ve beaten up the bad guy.”

The man looked at her quietly.

“If anyone dares to bully you in the future, hit them back!” She waved her fist and said, “Let me know if you can’t win against them. I’ll help you out!”

The man nodded in a seemingly understanding manner.

Sonnet reported the incident to the police and asked the man, “What’s your name?”

“Maxwell…Brookes.”

“My name is Sonnet Turner…” She paused and added, “I’m your wife.”

A hint of excitement flashed across the man’s eyes.

He raised his gaze to look at Sonnet. There was an innocent expression on his face. “What is a…wife?”

“Uh…A wife is someone that’s capable of protecting you,” Sonnet replied to him after pondering on it.

Despite feeling extremely exasperated, she was the one who had agreed to marry him.

Although he was a fool, he was harmless and pitiful. She should protect him since she had married him.

Maxwell’s eyes shone as he asked, “I can sleep with my wife as well, right?”

“…” Sonnet was speechless.

A few minutes later, the police came over. Sonnet recounted everything that had happened and showed the police the video that she had taken of Mr. Harrison beating up Maxwell.

The police investigated the scene and found sufficient evidence. They then brought Mr. Harrison away.

Sonnet looked around her after the police left.

They were in a two-storey building. The renovation work looked pretty old. It seemed like the building had been here for a long time.

Sonnet felt rather dazed. Was Maxwell not from a wealthy family? Why did he live in such a rundown place?

“Is Mr. Harrison the only person at home? Where’s everyone else?” She asked Maxwell.

“There’s Mrs. Wilson as well!” Maxwell said.

Sonnet was just about to ask him where Mrs. Wilson was when they heard banging noises from the courtyard.

Both of them followed the noises to the courtyard and saw someone pushing open the door of the storeroom from inside the room.

“Who’s inside?” Sonnet asked cautiously.

“Young Master, it’s me…” An elderly voice rang out.

Maxwell immediately called out emotionally, “It’s Mrs. Wilson. It’s Mrs. Wilson!”

He ran over to open the door. However, the door was locked from the outside. It could not be opened.

Sonnet pulled Maxwell away. She then retreated, ran ahead, and kicked the door. The door would not budge.

She turned around to look at Maxwell and told him, “You should do it instead.”

“I…” Maxwell pointed at the door. “I don’t dare…”

The pitiful man must be frightened due to all the beatings that he had received. He had lost all his confidence.

“You’re tall and strong. I believe that you can do it!” Sonnet encouraged him.

“You just need to kick the door open to save Mrs. Wilson!”

Maxwell nodded after receiving her encouragement. He kicked the door with all his might like Sonnet had done just now.

A loud bang rang out as the door fell off its hinges. A woman ran out of the storeroom frantically.

Maxwell immediately ran over and wrapped his arms around her.

The both of them hugged each other while crying. Sonnet watched them quietly by the side.

After a while, the elderly woman let go of Maxwell. Sonnet finally had a clear view of how she looked like.

She seemed to be in her fifties. The crows’ feet at the corners of her eyes were obvious, and she looked extremely haggard. She was dressed in a maid’s uniform.

Mrs. Wilson stared at Sonnet and spoke up hesitantly, “This is…”

“My wife!” Maxwell replied to her happily while patting his chest.

Mrs. WIlson smiled in a friendly manner and said, “You’re so pretty, Young Miss.”

Sonnet smiled at her and asked, “Mrs. Wilson, what happened? Who locked you up in here?”

“It was Yannis Jones!” Mrs. Wilson said angrily.

“Who’s Yannis Jones?” Sonnet asked.
