The Midnight Child
The Midnight Child

Prologue

The night was still with the blood moon shinning bright in the sky. Alpha Hardin and Luna Sky of the Midnight pack stood together looking down at their little baby girl as she slept, with love filling their eyes. This was not to be just any girl. She was to be far greater than any wolf could imagine and she had come from them. Months before her birth, the nearby witch coven had foretold that an amazing future was in store for their soon to be born child. At that time, no one imaged it would be a girl or the amount of strength she would have at birth.

With hostile packs known to be lurking on their borders, all those that knew of the prophecy were sworn to secrecy in hopes of protecting the child. Unfortunately, every secret has loose ends and word spread across the country. Every pack began to hear of the incredible child that had recently been born into the Midnight pack, placing the pack on high alert.

Nine months passed and it seemed as though tension with other packs was starting to relax. They seemed to take the news of this child as a gift and not something to fear. Still, security around the small town of Atlas, the home of the Midnight pack, didn’t let up. Patrols were sent out every night, twice as many warriors as there used to be all to ensure the child was kept safe.

The Alpha and the Luna could never have imagined when they were mated, what their bond would bring into this world, and on this night, they felt nothing but peace and happiness. As they stood together, Alpha Hardin looked out the window at the lands they claimed as home. He stared with confusion as his eyes met a bright orange glow that kissed the night. It wasn't until a second glow ignited that Hardin realized what was happening. Someone or something was setting their peaceful little town ablaze.

Quickly he looked to his wife, “Sky, take her. Our fears are here tonight and she must be kept safe at all costs.”

After assuring that Sky had started heading to the safe room that they had created for their daughter, Alpha Hardin didn’t hesitate to mind link his pack. “We are under attack. There are fires being lit across the town. Everyone up and ready. There is no telling what is waiting for us but we must all stand together. Is anyone left on patrol?”

In response to his last question all he received was silence. How had twenty of his best warriors been taken out before being able to send word of invasion? The Alpha ran from his room and stormed out of the front doors of his home. “Does anyone have eyes on the assailants?” He boomed though his mind-link.

“They're surrounding us Alpha,” his Beta answered. “At least thirty in wolf form, and they seem to be stronger than even our best warriors.”

Alpha Hardin looked up at the sky with a quick glance, seeing the blood moon shine overhead. Quickly, he understood who was attacking. The Alpha of the Blood Moon pack had always disliked Hardin, it was no secret. Alpha Eli had always considered himself to be the most powerful Alpha and tried to demand that all other Alphas pay him tribute. Alpha Hardin had led the resistance against him, keeping all other packs from bowing to him even while knowing of the unique power passed down to the Alphas of the Blood Moon pack. As long back as could be remembered, when the blood moon was in the sky, the Alpha had the power to share his strength with his entire pack, creating an entire army of warriors with the strength and speed of an Alpha.

Until tonight, Alpha Eli had made no moves against the Midnight pack. He had backed down from the resistance and waited for his moment to secure what he saw to be his rightful future. Tonight, was the night.

Alpha Hardin ran through the streets looking for the fight. He was able to end the lives of five scattered wolves before encountering the heart of the battle. All around him his town was in flames and the lives of his pack, his family were taken away. No matter how hard each and every wolf fought, they all went down. The only members of the Midnight pack that were spared that night were the young children who were offered a chance to join the Blood Moon pack. Only ten of the twenty children accepted, the rest met the same fate as their parents.

Every building in the town was licked by the wild flames, leaving only charred remains behind. The child that had been sought after was nowhere to be found and it could only be assumed that this child had been consumed by the flames when the lifeless body of Luna Sky was found in the ashes of the pack house. An entire pack wiped from history in a matter of hours and a child with such a bright future lost beneath the Blood Moon.
