Chapter 6

School started just like any day. I put my focus on my classes still trying to push all other thoughts out of my mind. With everything going on, I had almost forgotten about my run in with Jocelyn at Panic. Sadly, she was very far from forgetting. She sought me out in the hall, eyes full of anger.

“What the hell, freak? You make Kent blow me off than blow him off?” she screamed in my face.

I was slightly taken aback. How did she know I blew him off? Knowing better than engaging with her I just waited for her to finish her tirade.

“What nothing to say? Well, he had a hell of a lot to say about you. How is it I can be with the hottest guy ever and all he wants to talk about is some tomboy freak?”

I looked up at her “What did you tell him about me?” I asked.

“He wanted to know where to find you after you blew him off. I just told him we went to school together but I don’t see why that matters. He will change his mind about you once he sees who you truly are.” she spat.

At this point I was done and didn’t see why I shouldn’t let Leah have a little fun. She had been wanting to tell Jocelyn since the moment she laid eyes on her.

“And I don’t see why you even care? Aren’t you with Derek, or did he finally realize he was too good for you? I know Kent knows he’s too good for you. You’re nothing but a pretty face with nothing else to offer and once any guy gets passed that they will leave you. Jocelyn, I may be a freak and a tomboy, but you are nothing and not even worth my time.” Leah said through me.

Jocelyn looked like I had just slapped her, her mouth was hanging open. Not wanting to waste another second with her, I turned a walked away only then realizing that every pair of eyes in the hallway was glued to us. I continued walking with my head held high. It felt good to finally tell Jocelyn how I felt about her.

As I dressed for softball practice in the locker room, I thought about what Jocelyn had said. She had said Kent had been asking about me and she told him where I went to school. I was starting to wonder if he would show up here. Leah was jumping in my mind again hanging on to the hope of seeing our mate again. I simply rolled my eyes at her; I had still not come to terms with the idea of a mate.

I very quickly realized during practice that I was going to have to try and hold back my strength. During batting practice, I managed to not only hit a home run but to hit it ten feet beyond the fence. The whole team looked at me in shock along with April and Seth who were watching from the stands. My throws were too hard and I could run the bases at least twice as fast as I had the week before. This wasn’t going to work; everyone would notice something was up with me.

I did my best to control my strength for the rest of practice and was thankful when it was finally over. I went over to Seth and April who were holding hands.

So, you guys going to finally make this official and tell me you’re dating or do you just want me to pretend I don’t notice anything?” I said.

April blushed with a small smile on her face. “We were planning on telling you, we only just realized that we both felt the same.”

Seth smiled at April kissing the back of her hand. “Now don’t be jealous Sarah, I still love both my girls,” he said with a wink.

I rolled my eyes at Seth and looked between him and April. “I’m happy for both of you, you make a great couple.”

We started walking towards home together when I caught an over powering scent on the wind.  I looked around and sure enough the man from the bar, Kent was standing looking at me.

“Hey guys, I forgot something in my locker. You guys go without me, I’ll make my way home alone.” I said slowing down from them.

“Are you sure, we’ll wait?” April replied.

After assuring her that I would be alright, I started walking back towards the school and Kent. It wasn’t that I wanted to talk to my mate, even though Leah was screaming at me too. It was just that he was the only other werewolf I had knowingly come in contact with and my only chance at answers.

As I got closer, the smell got stronger and it started to feel like he was the opposite charge of a magnet pulling me in. My whole body was being drawn to him and though it felt nice, it also felt strange.

“Hi,” I said looking up into his blue eyes. “I’m Sarah, I was told that you’re Kent. What are you doing here?”

“I came to see you, you’re my mate. I wanted to know why you ran away from me the other day. If you plan to reject me, I would just like to know why?” he said. His voice was rugged and deep but it had a calming power over me that was unexplainable.

I took a deep breath before responding to him, trying to figure out how to explain. “I was adopted. Up until about a week ago, I thought I was human. Then this voice appeared in my head and told me I’m a werewolf. Before meeting you at the club I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a mate bond and didn’t even understand what I was feeling until Leah explained it to me. I’m sorry I ran but this is all a bit much for me. I know nothing about werewolves and now I guess I am one.”

His expression didn’t give much hint to what he was thinking. It took a while for him to respond, if I had to guess he was talking to his own wolf.

“That is, unexpected. If you don’t mind me asking, do you know what happened to your family?”

I wasn’t sure how much I should tell him but with Leah egging me on I decided to tell him the truth. “The town I was born in was burnt to the ground when I was around 9 months old, my parents with it. I was found among the rubble. As far as I know there were no other survivors. Other than that, I don’t know anything about my family.”

A look of shock lit up his eyes, it was almost as if he knew something I didn’t. “There is someone in my pack that I think you should talk to. He might be able to help you find some answers about your past, and possibly your future. Would you be willing to come with me to see him?”

I was still apprehensive about this man but the chance to get answers about who I was, was too much to pass up. “I can’t right now, but this Saturday I’m free.”

“I can pick you up if you would like, just give me your number so we can make arrangements.” he said reaching forward with his hand out stretched like he meant to caress my face. Before he reached me, he dropped his hand with a hint of sadness on his face.

“It’s hard for him to not be close to you, once you start to accept him, you will feel it too. The mate bond will push the two of you together no matter how hard you try to pull away from him,” Leah informed me.

I only slightly felt what Leah was talking about, but I was thankful that Kent was considerate enough to try and not push me after what I had told him. I had a lot to figure out about who I was before trying to figure out how I felt about him.
