Chapter 19: A Siren’s Song

Blue

My heartbeat drummed in my ears as I ran, pushing myself to fly over the roots and bushes on the rough terrain.

I could hear their footsteps thundering after me and I could see some creeping up on my sides.

They were fast.

Breathing hard and nearing exhaustion, I'd been running for hours now, I stopped before the bank of a river. It stretched out all the way around me, with no other visible route over it, in sight.

There was no way around it, I had to get in.

My hands clutched my chest as I tried to slow down the extremely hard pounding of my heart.

Maybe I would pass away from the way my heart was beating so fast, and be spared of all this trouble.

Shaking off the deadly thought, I waded into the water.

I was careful to step in the shallow parts, knowing fully well that if a strong wave pulled me under I might not be able to swim against the torrent. I had only ever taken dips in swimming pools, and even at the beach I had never ventured far.
