Chapter 18: Unbound

Blue

I couldn't sleep.

Despite the fact that I clearly remembered him saying he would only bring me whatever I needed after I fell asleep.

I was anxious and my heart kept beating fast, like I was already planning to escape that very night.

Like everything that had happened since my arrival in Kandare, this felt surreal.

I shifted on my side, my palm pressed down on the cold ground. A sound had me sitting up in the dark and crawling slowly to press my face between the bars.

Someone had turned off the lantern that had burned consistently for the last few days. Everywhere was pitch black, as even the holes I took for windows had been locked some days ago.

I sniffed the air as something strange filtered into my cell, and my head fell back.

It was a pungently sweet smell. It made me drowsy, and I felt the pull of sleep against my eyelids.

Startled, I shook my head side to side, trying to stay awake. I'd been too anxious to sleep just seconds ago, so why was I feeling so sleepy now?
