School Settlement

Hayley

Today was the day we were heading to Wynter and Autumn potential school. I had to take the day off from work, also did Kyle. Kyle was coming along with us sure to put in a united front to the proprietress of the school. So we were all leaving in his car. And that was going to be easier since he had baby seats too.

It was a prestigious Prep school for kindergarten children, one of the best in New York city. Also it was hard to get in, and they even had a waiting list for a new session. Thankfully, Kyle's mom knew the proprietress and has put in a good word for us.

''Okay, Wynter come here.'' I called for him. I had been struggling with helping him put on his jacket. The weather today was chill and I needed them to be extremely covered.

''Mama, no.'' He shook his little head making me bite in laughter. Not today little man, Kyle would be here soon and the last thing I wanted was for us to run late. And as I had learnt consistently from my job, first impression always matters.

''Wynter, don't make me get you. Look at Autumn, she's been a good girl and has worn her jacket.'' I gestured at his younger twin sister who was settled on the couch tapping on her baby tablet.

Not that Autumn didn't have her rebellious side but right now she was calm and Wynter tended to imitate his sister.

''Now be a good boy and let mama help you put on your jacket'' I suggested gently raising the jacket in question.

''But it's itchy.'' He scratched his arm looking at the jacket with discomfort.

''Autumn looks perfectly okay with hers. Autumn, is your jacket itchy?''

''No mummy.'' She shook her head still focused on her tablet.

I could see that Wynter was still in doubt refusing to come to me.

It was a wonder how the twins could speak almost clearly but only a few of their baby lisp slipped in from time to time. Joe had told me that it would be gone when they finally clocked three.

I heard car moving into the parking space of our building. It has to be Kyle.

''Okay, come here. Your daddy is already here.'' They both perked up and Wynter barely allowed me to help him put on his jacket.

The doorbell rang and I yelled 'coming'. Thank God that I had arranged everything that we were going to be needing for this brief trip, including food, baby wipes, additional clothes and diapers.

The diapers were just there for emergency reasons because Wynter and Autumn were already potty-trained.

Picking up both of them and making sure that they were evenly positioned on both sides of my arms, I made my way to the door.

I opened the door to see Kyle waiting patiently. He immediately held out his hands taking the kids from me. They didn't even hesitate in fleeing to their father's arms.

''You can take them to the car, let me get the rest of our stuffs.'' I rushed back inside to get the bag.

After I was done, I locked up and made my way to Kyle's car.

By the time we arrived at the school, Wynter and Autumn were already asleep. I felt a little bad that we had to wake them up because they had to be awake for what was to happen.

We made our way to the administrative block where we were to meet the proprietress.

''Right this way, Mr and Mrs Banes. Mrs Crawford is expecting you in her office.'' The receptionist directed us to the proprietress' office.

''Thank you.'' I murmured.

Getting to the office, Kyle knocked on the door. He was carrying Wynter while I on the other hand was carrying Autumn.

The door opened to reveal a middle-aged woman with a broad smile on her face. She looked like a woman on a mission ready to sell the idea of why Blue Ivy Prep was the best school for our kids.

''Come right in, Mr and Mrs Banes. Please come right in.'' She greeted welcoming us in.

After we had settled down, Mrs Crawford went down to business.

''Such a lovely family. If you don't mind me asking, how old are these cuties?'' She asked with interest.

''Two years and three months old.'' I replied with a little smile. Wynter and Autumn were quiet observing the new environment and Mrs Crawford.

''That's wonderful. And their speech skills?'' I understood that all these questions were required to check the kids capabilities and to check if they were ready to attend school.

''They do speak incredibly well.'' Kyle answered this time adjusting Wynter on his lap.

''Wonderful. Perhaps, I might like a demonstration of them speaking. That's if you don't mind.'' She followed up with a smile.

''Sure thing. Wynter and Autumn. would you introduce yourself to Mrs Crawford?''

Mrs Crawford had an expectant look on her face, her chin was placed in the cradle of her palms.

They were both quiet and shy to the extent that Kyle and I had to encourage them to speak.

Autumn shifted on my lap starting off.

''Hi, Mrs Cawfard, my name is Autuum.''

Wynter was also shy but also introduced himself following in his sister's footsteps.

''Impressive. I have to say very impressive. Have they been introduced to the alphabets and numerical system?''

''Yes Mrs Crawford.'' That was the use of the tablet. They learnt subconsciously through the songs and cartoons that they listened and watched on it.

''Impeccable. I guess this settles it all.''

We didn't waste much time discussing the tuition fees and any other fees we were subjected to pay. Kyle did a wire-transfer paying off all the expenses.

By the time we left the office, Mrs Crawford was a happy woman.

''Thanks for today. I really appreciate you showing up today.'' I thanked him after he had dropped us home helping me in putting the kids to sleep. They had fallen asleep on our way back taking their nap of the day.

''You are welcome.''

''Yeah.'' We kept silent for an awkward moment.

''Okay, I think it's time that I take my leave.'' He looked at his wrist-watch standing up.

''Uh Kyle?''

''Yeah?'' He looked at me making me feel fidgety foe what I was going to say

''Can I ask you for a favor?''
