Complicated

Hayley

"No way." I breathed out, shocked at the bomb that Amber had just dropped on me.

"Yes way. This was the reaction I was dreading when I thought of telling you." She winced at the still befuddled expression on my face.

"Like seriously Amber. Dating the ex husband of your client?" I questioned in disbelief.

Amber was a divorce attorney and apparently she just told me that her mysterious British man was one of her client's ex husband.

"I know. At least, they are divorced." She shrugged suggestively.

"Yeah it could be worse. I probably need something stronger after hearing all this." But sadly we were at a coffee house and on my lunch break.

"And we haven't gotten really intimate." She looked guilty. Of course, she knew that I was angry with her for keeping such a from me.

"Just save it Amber. I am your friend, your best friend at that and I will not sugarcoat anything for you." I paused to take a deep breath before going into details.

"I know."

"This is a very terrible idea." I pointed out.

"I agree."

"You know this will end badly."

"Yes but I can't seem to resist him." She whined.

"You should have tried harder but all in all, I will always support you in any decision you make. Regardless of the consequences that may arise."

"Thank you Hayley. That's all I just need." Amber squeezed my fingers.

"You are welcome." I reciprocated the action, worried.

"Now that's settled, how did your night go?" She asked taking a sip from her iced tea.

"Okay." Far from okay.

"Nothing happened between the two of you?" She prompted.

"Were you expecting something to happen?" I returned back.

"You know the last time you guys were alone and together.."

"And I will make sure it never happens again." I was going to keep that promise no matter what.

"So, like nothing?"

"Well... we did have like a fallout." I cony

"You fought?" Her eyes widened.

"Yeah." I nodded.

"I can't believe you were holding out on me." I tossed her a glare and she smiled sheepishly.

"We did have a fallout. Argued meaninglessly but some truths were revealed."

"What truths?"

"That he never told Simone about what happened between us."

"So she find out by herself? How's that possible?" Amber asked baffled.

"I don't know but he apologized on her behalf." I shrugged.

"Do you think she's spying on you guys?" Amber suggested.

"No, I don't think so." I shook my head.

"Don't rule that out. You know she will do anything to keep Kyle all to herself." She spat out Kyle's name with disgust.

"Whatever. I don't care, she can keep him." It still hurts that Kyle chose Simone over his family but the difference between us was that. He loved her but barely tolerated me during our time together.

"He is damn lucky that I am not the attorney in charge of the divorce. Else he would be leaving with absolutely nothing." Amber muttered.

And I know she meant that. She was still peeved that she couldn't represent me in court. But she had recommended one of her colleagues to me.

"And you know the crazy thing, he wanted to walk me to the door." I dropped.

"The audacity! Did he think you guys went on a date for him to suggest that?" She gasped.

"I don't know but I refused him and thanked God that Tammy didn't see us."

"That would sure be disastrous." Amber nodded agreeing. We all knew what Tammy's mother would do with an information like this. Her reputation preceded her.

"Let's forget about all this and just enjoy our lunch together." I suggested taking a good sip of my coffee.

"Yeah, that's a good idea."

Back in my office, I was working on a new design for a client when Mary walked.

"Good afternoon ma'am."

"Afternoon Mary. How are you?" My eyes were still on my computer screen.

"I am fine ma'am. I have an update on your meeting with the potential clients." That got my attention.

"Okay go on."

"The couple said they would like to discuss over dinner at," She looked at her tablet to confirm the place.

"L'Baroque."

"Okay is that all?" I asked. That would be nice and I would be totally relaxed for the meeting.

"No, I'm afraid not." She had a pinched look on her face.

"What's wrong?" Her tone had me straightening my back tensing up.

"They requested you attend with your husband." Say what now? I haven't told anyone about the separation between Kyle and I but I suspected Mary knew about it. But she hasn't asked to confirm.

"Why would they request something like that?" I had to calm myself not to raise my voice at Mary. She didn't do anything to deserve it.

"What should I reply with ma'am?" She asked nervously.

"Give me twenty minutes."

"Okay ma'am." She left me to my thoughts. Just what am I going to do now?
