Chapter 1 Their Baby

"Ms. Carrington, the report shows that you have a thin uterine lining. It is causing some complications with your pregnancy. Please be extra cautious with your diet and physical activities," the doctor said while prescribing the medication.

"Here, you can go and collect your medication now."

"Okay. Thanks, doctor." Gabriella Carrington took the prescription and stood up slowly.

"Be careful, alright? You must take this matter seriously!" the doctor added.

A thin uterine lining tended to increase the risk of miscarriage. Many women lost the ability to conceive again after having a miscarriage.

"Thank you, doctor. I'll be careful." Gabriella nodded and smiled.

She had been married for three years now. No one looked forward to the arrival of the baby more than she did.

She would definitely take good care of herself.

After picking up the medication, Gabriella left the hospital and got into the car.

The driver started the engine before looking at her through the rearview mirror. "Mrs. Toussaint, Mr. Toussaint's flight lands in 20 minutes. Should we head to the airport now?"

"Alright."

Gabriella smiled at the thought of seeing her husband in 20 minutes.

She was thrilled.

Henry Toussaint had been away on a business trip for almost a month. She missed him very much.

On the way to the airport, Gabriella could not resist taking out the pregnancy test report from her bag and reading it repeatedly. She gently rested her hand on her belly.

Eight months later, the baby would be born. This was her and Henry's child.

She could not wait to share the good news with him.

When they arrived at the airport, the driver stopped the car at a conspicuous spot. "Why don't you give Mr. Toussaint a call, Mrs. Toussaint?"

Gabriella checked the time and figured that Henry would have gotten out of the plane by now.

She tried calling him but could not get through.

"Perhaps his flight is slightly delayed. Let's wait for a while," Gabriella said.

After some time had passed, Henry was still nowhere to be seen. Gabriella called him again, but she still failed to reach him.

"Let's keep waiting."

Flight delays were common. The planes would sometimes land an hour or two later than scheduled.

Two hours later, Gabriella phoned Henry again, and the call finally connected. "Henry, have you gotten off the plane yet?"

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before a female voice rang out. "Sorry, but Henry has gone to the restroom. I'll tell him to call you back later."

The call ended before Gabriella could say anything. For a moment, she stared at her phone, dazed.

She recalled that Henry had not brought a female secretary with him on this business trip.

Gabriella fixed her eyes on her phone, waiting for Henry to return her call.

Ten minutes went by without him calling back.

After waiting for another five minutes, Gabriella could not hold herself back anymore. She dialed his number once more.

The call kept ringing for a long time before it was answered.

"Yes, Gabriella?" The familiar and magnetic male voice reached her ear.

"Where are you, Henry? The driver and I are waiting for you in the parking lot at Terminal D. You can come on out."

"Sorry, I forgot to turn my phone back on after getting off the plane. I've already left the airport," Henry replied after a moment of silence.

Gabriella's smile faded at once.

"Then ... I'll wait for you at home?" Gabriella bit her lip. "I have something to tell you."

"Sure. I want to talk to you about something too."

"I'll ask Maria to prepare your favorite food for dinner."

"Have dinner without me. I have something to deal with, so I'll be back a little late tonight."

Gabriella was disappointed, but she responded calmly, "Okay."

Just as they were about to end the call, the female voice from earlier came through again. "Sorry, Henry. Gabriella called you just now, but I forgot to tell you about it ..."

Gabriella's heart sank. She frowned and wanted to ask Henry who the woman was. However, the line was cut off before she could do so.

Staring at her phone, she pursed her lips and said to the driver, "Let's go back."

Having guessed what had happened, the driver drove away from the airport.

During dinner, Gabriella did not have much appetite. Nevertheless, she tried her best to eat for the sake of the baby in her belly.

She sat on the couch in the living room and hugged a cushion, constantly glancing at her watch. She was not in the mood to pay attention to what was playing on the television.

It was already 10:00 pm.

Gabriella yawned and ended up falling asleep.

While half-asleep, she suddenly felt someone lifting her up.

She caught a whiff of a familiar scent mixed with the faint smell of alcohol.

"Henry?" she murmured.
