Chapter 2 Let’s Get a Divorce

"It's me."

"You've ... been drinking?"

"Yeah. I had a few drinks with a friend."

As the sound of Henry showering came from the bathroom, Gabrielle frowned and tossed around in bed. She could not fall asleep.

The bed dipped beside her, and a hand settled gently on her waist before tracing along the graceful contours of her body.

"Not today ..." Gabriella stopped him drowsily.

She subconsciously feared that it would affect the baby.

The hand stopped moving and rested on her back. "Sleep well."

Overcome by drowsiness, Gabriella quickly drifted off to sleep.

When Gabriella woke up the next morning, she found herself alone in bed. The creased bed sheet was the only proof of Henry's return yesterday.

She was a little frustrated. Why did she fall asleep just like that last night?

There was nothing she could do about it now. She decided to tell him about her pregnancy today.

After freshening up, Gabriella walked over to the closet and chose a white suit for Henry. Thinking that her pregnancy was good news, she then picked out a red-striped tie and placed the clothes at the foot of the bed.

Henry had returned from his morning jog and was sitting on the couch in his loungewear. Once he saw Gabriella coming downstairs, he put down the document in his hand.

"Let's eat," he said.

When Gabriella was done with her breakfast, she took a deep breath and said, "Henry, I have something to tell you." Her expression was tinged with faint joy and anticipation.

If he knew that he was going to be a father, he would be happy, right?

"I have something to say too." Henry's voice was deep.

"You go first, then." Gabriella smiled sweetly and a little shyly.

"Gabriella ... let's get a divorce." Henry stood up and retrieved the document from the couch.

"This is the divorce agreement. Go through it first. If you have any problems with it, let me know. I'll do my best to accommodate your requests."

Gabriella felt her heart stop for a second. She stared at Henry in a daze as her mind went blank.

Did she mishear him?

It took her a while to regain her speech.

"A divorce?" she repeated. Her lips trembled.

Why did he want to divorce her all of a sudden?

It came as such a shock to her!

"We had been set up that night, so we had no choice but to get married. We didn't even publicize our marriage, so why don't we just bring it to an end quickly?" Henry said casually, as if their marriage was not a serious matter.

Gabriella turned pale. She felt a chill sweeping over her body.

Something seemed to be squeezing her heart. She could not breathe.

What he said was not true. She had loved him for nine years now. She fell in love with him at 16 when she first set foot into Toussaint Residence.

She was 25 years old now and had a successful career.

Never once did she feel as if she had been forced into this marriage. She was willing to be with him and get married to him.

Though, she supposed it was not the same for him.

Gabriella swallowed hard and took a deep breath. Fixing her eyes on him, she tried her best to keep her voice calm. "Haven't we been getting along quite well in the past three years? Have you really decided to ... divorce me?"

"Yes."

"Grandpa and Grandma ..."

"I'll explain it to them."

"What if I'm …"

She wanted to say "pregnant".

Henry interrupted impatiently, "Hannah's back."

Upon hearing him, Gabriella froze. Those words were like daggers piercing deeply into her heart and causing her great agony.

Then, she took the divorce agreement and heard herself saying, "Okay. I'll have a look at this."

The divorce had nothing to do with them having been set up or the marriage being forced.

It was because Hannah Bennett was back in the country.
