Chapter 3 The Blame Rests On Your Dreadful Family Background

Asher Sullivan had a smile on his face. Although he looked decent in a suit, his gaze made Penny uncomfortable.

She had a cold expression when she passed Willow’s medicine to him.

"I've already visited her. Here, take the medicine to Susan."

Asher raised his eyebrows and said, "Let's head to Willow’s ward together. We haven't caught up with each other for a long time."

"No, I have something else to attend to." Penny turned around and left the hall.

Staring at her receding back, he put the medicine to his nose and smelled it.

‘Anyone would be curious when they see a beautiful young woman, having prescribed drugs in her hands, walk out of the gynecology department.’

Asher lowered his gaze and was taken aback by what he saw.

He did not expect Penny, who looked so modest and reserved, to be so wild in private.

‘Her husband hasn't been around for three years, so it's inevitable for a lonely woman to cheat.

‘I’m not in a rush since she has to go back to the Sullivans one day or another. There are plenty of opportunities for me to snag her.’

Penny got into the car and felt a little troubled.

In the past, she felt uncomfortable when the family of three moved into her home. Asher, who was not related to Penny, was often around.

Zane persuaded her to stay. However, when she subtly asked Zane if he could get Asher to move out, Zane was stressed out.

Zane felt that he owed it to Susan and Willow. His love for them extended to Asher as well.

Penny did not want to make things difficult for him so she decided to move out.

She felt like an outsider when Susan and her kids intruded into her life.

Penny headed home to work. Her phone rang and her bad mood worsened when she saw the caller ID.

The ringing went on and on. She took a deep breath before she answered the call.

"Hello, Ms. Bailey."

It was Aurelia Bailey, Caleb's biological mother, who called.

Since she married Caleb, her noble mother-in-law had never shown any favor to her. Penny knew it well. She decided to stay away from everything to do with the Fergersons. The only exception was when she had to put on a show in front of Sir Fergerson.

"Meet me at the Fergerson Estate. I want to discuss the divorce with you."

Aurelia spoke bluntly. To avoid Penny turning her down, she said, "Penny, you should know that we couldn't change Sir Fergerson’s mind back then. Now that Caleb has taken over Fergerson Corporation, he’s the one who has the final say in the family. Sir Fergerson will probably give way as well.”

She made it as clear as day that Caleb and Penny had to get divorced.

Aurelia had thought about the reactions Penny would have if she heard the news. After all, she believed that no woman would be willing to leave her son.

‘Even if he doesn’t fall for them, any woman would count their lucky stars if he was willing to speak to them.’

However, Penny responded in a calm tone from the other end of the phone, "Okay, do you want me to go over now?"

She did not question anything and acted like it was a matter of fact.

It was as though she had been waiting for this day.

Aurelia felt uncomfortable. ‘It makes sense for the Fergersons to get rid of Penny, but her reaction is so cold. She makes it seem like my son isn’t attractive enough.’

She believed that Caleb deserved better so she snorted coldly and said, "I’m glad you agree. You’re not worthy of Caleb, and he deserves better. Come here now. I’ve also called Caleb and he will arrive soon."

Penny paused. ‘Caleb will be there too?’

Penny wondered how he would react if he found out she was the wife whom he was about to divorce.

After all, Caleb was such a prideful person.

He would probably feel nauseated.

Penny chuckled and drove to the Fergerson Estate.

Aurelia was not friendly toward Penny but did not act rude since Penny did not demand anything for the divorce.

"It is what it is. I’m sure you’re aware of your family situation so let’s call a spade a spade. You should persuade your dad to give up since he’s not great at running the family business. The Fergersons can help him once but we can't help him a second time. Plus, your stepmother is still being greedy. You’re in a terrible situation. Caleb gained nothing from marrying you and even has to carry the burden of your family. Background matters a lot, so if you want to blame someone, you can blame your dreadful family background."

Penny sat on the sofa and nodded when she heard that. "Yes, I don't deserve Mr. Fergerson."

In fact, besides the marriage certificate, they were not much different from strangers. Her title of ‘Mrs. Fergerson’ was in vain.

It was somewhat of a relief for her to be divorced.

Aurelia was speechless.

She felt a sense of helplessness because she could not tell if what Penny said was true or not.

Just as they were almost done with their conversation, they saw the headlight of a car driving in.

The servant waiting outside saw Caleb's car stop and rushed in to share, "Ma'am, Young Master is back!"

Aurelia was overjoyed and quickly walked to the door.

Penny had prepared herself to face Caleb. However, when she stared in the direction of the door, she became uncontrollably tense.
