Chapter 6 He Fancies Someone Else

The accidental encounter was too brief so Penny was not worried that Caleb would recognize her.

She never showed up in front of the Fergersons, except when she visited Sir Fergerson during the holidays every year. Caleb himself never saw his wife and others would not be interested in an unimportant person like her either.

She thought of Caleb's reaction, and regret crept into Penny’s smile. "Maybe it's something I did that ticked off Mr. Fergerson."

Liam liked people who were good-looking regardless of their occupation or family background. His tone became involuntarily soft when speaking with such a beautiful woman.

"How could it be? Your design is artistic. My cousin runs a business, but he didn't start off studying finance. He took two degrees, and one of them happens to be related to art. I’m sure he can appreciate beautiful things. Maybe he's so preoccupied with the divorce recently that puts him in a bad mood."

Penny did not respond. Hank asked in surprise, "Caleb is married?!"

Liam nodded and said, "He got married a long time ago. When he came back, I heard that he contacted a lawyer and was in a hurry to get a divorce."

Liam rarely went back to the Fergerson Estate, especially after he became an adult. He spent a lot of time outside and only knew that Caleb got into a marriage arranged by their grandfather. However, Liam had never met his cousin-in-law.

Hank could not help but be interested. "I thought that the place he bought in Kensington Gardens is a newlywed house, but I’m not aware that he’s already married for some time. Does he plan to live there by himself?"

Liam beckoned the two to sit down. "It’s sort of a newlywed house. Back then, my cousin was forced to marry his current wife. He fancies someone else. The house in Kensington Gardens is likely for that woman."

After he said that, he courteously handed Penny a glass of juice. "When he comes later, I'll show him your designs. That should pique his interest."

Penny took the juice and smiled politely at him. "Thank you. If this project goes through, I’ll treat Mr. Jones to dinner."

Liam liked her attitude. She was neither arrogant nor impetuous. Pleased, he responded, "If it goes through, you must treat me to dinner indeed. You’d be paid handsomely in design fees. Since you’d be working for my cousin, your reputation would precede you in the future too."

Penny nodded. Indeed, if the project was a success, she would be well-known enough to network with those in Caleb's circle. When that happened, nobody would have to worry about the studio going out of business.

The door on the other side of the corridor opened and a tall man walked in, exuding a frighteningly cold aura.

His phone rang as soon as he stepped in.

Seeing that it was Liam who called, Caleb frowned and did not answer his phone.

The man at the side caught a glimpse of his expression and was amused. "What's the matter? You just arrived but you look like someone ran over your dog. Who dares to anger you?"

The room was huge but it was still rather crowded. There was also a hierarchy gap in the Imperial City’s social circle.

Caleb belonged to the top and was surrounded by people who, without exception, were from the center of power.

A bunch of them wisely put some distance between them and Caleb as soon as he came in.

Winston Hill handed him a glass of wine. The man's fingertips were pale. His brows and eyes were delicate, and he acted quite leisurely. "Is it because of the divorce? I heard that she’s refusing to sign the papers."

It was no secret that Caleb went to a lawyer to file for a divorce.

He assumed that Sir Fergerson would hear about it soon.

Caleb took off his cufflinks and tossed them to the waiter beside him. He sat down on the sofa. Crossing his long legs, his body posture exuded a domineering aura. "It will be a matter of time before she signs. She knows better than anyone else why we got married back then."

He spoke indifferently, making it clear that he did not want to speak anymore.

He was not unhappy because of his nominal wife. It was because of the woman he chatted with just now.

He could not figure out how she had been in that line of work for three years in spite of her jerky and awkward movements.

It just so happened that the people at the next table were talking about their girlfriends.

Men would chat about everything without taboos in private. Caleb did not pay attention to them but he could not help overhearing parts of their conversation.

"She pretended to be innocent? What did you do after you found out?"

"What else could I do besides break up? It’s been so many times that her hymen has been repaired. I was ready to marry her when my friend in the hospital recognized her. The baby isn’t mine. She wants me to be a father to a child that I'm not related to so she can live an easy life? In her dreams!"

There was no shortage of money or time for those born with a silver spoon in their mouths. All they talked about was women.

"The modern women aren’t simple creatures. They can adapt to whatever you like. It’s all about ‘targeted hunting' now. The kid might even be from someone you know. The purer they seem, the wilder they used to be..."

Caleb suddenly tightened his grip on the cup. He recalled how Penny looked at him as some fragments of last night flooded into his memory. The images were still fresh and clear. Irritation rose in his heart.

At this moment, Liam called again, interrupting Caleb’s line of thought. He urged Caleb to go to the room downstairs, saying that he wanted to talk face-to-face.
