Chapter 7 What Is Meant To Be Will Be

“About what?” Caleb snapped back after answering Liam’s call.

Caleb's tone was extremely cold. He leaned back slowly and said, "In the future, don't introduce me to this kind of woman."

‘Does he feel no shame that we shared a woman?’

He was aware that there were people who had such a habit. However, he had been abstinent for many years and was never interested in such things.

‘I’m not sure what Liam has been learning out there all these years. He needs to grow up sooner or later.’

"Caleb, aren’t you coming to see her? I searched for a long time before I found someone suitable for you."

If Caleb was not interested, Liam still had a few vacant houses. "If you don't want it, I'll have her work for me since I quite like her work."

Hearing that, Caleb straightened in his seat immediately.

"I’ll arrange for you to intern at the Fergerson Corporation so that you won't hang out with these dubious people all day long. Your mother has already spoken to me about it. Come to the office tomorrow morning."

While Liam was stunned at his words, Caleb hung up the phone before Liam had time to refute.

He looked at Penny in distress. Penny guessed that she was probably rejected.

She reassured him. "Mr. Jones, don't worry. Maybe Mr. Fergerson has a designer that he likes more. After all, the house is going to be designed for his favorite person, so it makes sense that he’s picky."

Liam sighed and said, "That’s impossible. I know that he's still looking for a designer."

Penny's expression was calm. "What is meant to be will be. Maybe I’m just not fated to work for Mr. Fergerson."

"Well then, I'll ask him in person later. If he doesn't need your services, I'll hand over a few of my houses for you to design. I do like your style."

Penny smiled and reached out her hand slowly. "Thank you for appreciating my work, Mr. Jones."

Liam’s phone rang again. He answered the call before turning around to give Penny and Hank an apologetic smile. "Tonight's expenses will be charged to my account. I have to get going, so please give me your contact number and I’ll call you another day."

Penny gave him her number without hesitation. Liam saved it, got up, and left the room.

In a blink of an eye, Penny and Hank were the only ones left in the room. Hank was on his second round of drinks for the night and was already drunk. Once there were no outsiders, he did not have to put on an act anymore.

"Let me call you a taxi, Hank"

Penny knew that he stayed behind to negotiate the project for her. She appreciated it. Besides that, she felt comfortable working in Hank's studio.

"Thank you for your help, Penny."

After Hank relaxed, his drunkenness overwhelmed him instantly.

Penny wanted to drive Hank home but she knew better. Hank got married a year ago and his wife was the jealous sort. To avoid unnecessary trouble, it was better for Penny to get him a taxi.

She helped him up. After leaving the room, they walked along the corridor toward the elevator on the other side.

The elevator led to the exit.

Hank was mumbling drunkenly.

"I told you that it's not what you think. I'm tired of you doing this.

"Can’t you give me some space?"

Penny guessed that he was so drunk that he thought he was arguing with his wife. Penny held him up respectfully, but it was a little strenuous as she had to keep a distance.

Hank staggered and almost fell forward when the elevator doors opened.

Penny hastily pulled him back when a long and bony hand reached out from inside to hold onto the elevator doors.

Her eyes trailed along to the owner of the hand until she realized it was Caleb.

Penny wanted to say "thank you" but she was too surprised to utter a word.

‘We haven't seen each other in the past three years. Now, why do we keep bumping into each other since yesterday? Is this fate?’

Caleb glanced at her and Hank, then looked away. "Which floor are you heading to?"

The collar of Caleb’s shirt was loose with two buttons undone. He looked more relaxed than before but he retained the same composure.

Even so, Penny caught the sarcasm and disgust in his gaze.

Awkward silence filled the air around them. She helped Hank into the elevator. Her tone was impartial and polite as she said, "First floor, thank you."

It just so happened that Hank muttered some nonsense again.

"All you talk about is money. Do you even have feelings for me?"

Penny heard from her colleagues in the studio that Hank’s wife spent a lot of money. Hank was a motivated man who built the studio into what it was. However, he did not keep any of the money he earned. Every dime went to his wife.

It was so quiet that the only thing that Penny could hear was the wind from the air-conditioning. Suddenly, she heard Caleb murmuring, "Is he your client?"

Judging by Hank’s current state, Penny could not admit that Hank was her boss.

She knew Caleb disliked her. If he found out that the owner of the studio that employed Penny was drunk in a club, he might immediately blacklist them and never hire them. With that in mind, she nodded.

“Yes, Mr. Fergerson. What a coincidence."
