CHAP 29

I woke up in a white room. I processed everything for a while and slowly looked around. I saw my friends standing on the corner; only Sophia was sitting on an empty seat. Maybe she just got here this morning because she wasn't there last night. Something I understand because of her situation. They were all looking at the ground as if they were deep in thought.

My mother, who was curled up on the side of my bed, did not escape my sight either. I weakly placed my hand on my stomach and closed my eyes tightly.

Are you still there?

"Hija," my mother whispered. Maybe she woke up because of my movement.

I slowly turned my attention to her and to them. They all watched me with sadness in their eyes.

"He's safe, isn't he?" I rasped curiously.

No one answered my question; I automatically closed my eyes and silently burst into tears.

"Another person I was unable to protect," I said weakly, squirming.

"Quennie, don't speak like that. You didn't like what happened," Mommy said calmly and sweetly
