“Everything is alright. Your safe Avery.” Cedric whispered as he unwrapped his tight fingers from my wrist.I pulled the metal cross against my rib cage, holding it tightly as I looked up at him. My heart hasn't come to the conclusion that I am safe, as Cedric just said. Instead, it's still slamming against my breast, making it hard for me to suck in a good breath.“Nobody is in here. You're safe.” He repeated, bringing his hands towards me and tugging the metal cross from my palms. Wasn't easy. My fingers were clinched tight. I didn't want to let it go. “Avery. You. Are. Safe.” He growled. I watched as his eyes darkened the word safe, and something inside my belly settled. I unwrapped my fingers from the cross and let him take it from me.“Let's go sit in the living room, and you can tell me and my partner here what happened.” Cedric suggested while checking out the bathroom when I step aside. My legs are shaking, like I'm walking on jello. I swear I'm much better in a scary situati
I was right, I got little sleep last night. No, let me correct myself. I didn't sleep more than a few minutes at a time when I dozed off while sitting on a barstool leaning over my kitchen counter. I was beyond exhausted, but I just could not shut off my brain enough for me to even fall back asleep peacefully. I was too nervous that whoever it was would come back, that I pushed things up against both my front and back doors. No matter what those cops said, I didn't make this up. I know what I heard. Someone came into my house last night. I don't know how. I don't know why. What I know is that I wasn't alone when I called 911. Even if they didn't believe me, I believed myself.I didn't have just one portion of my Grandma's Coffee-Toffee cake; I had two. Which isn't a good thing. The number of calories in just one slice is ridiculously high. I'll need to hit the gym soon.I started working out at the local gym back in my hometown before I moved. It was all a part of my new me bullshit p
I'm back at my house a little while later. I was cautious when I entered. Turned the key, poked my head inside to make sure I didn't hear any footsteps, and then locked the door behind me.I guess Vickie spread the word around the block because as soon as I drove my car onto the street; I had eyes on me. I sensed eyes on me when I parked my car, and I felt eyes on me when I had gotten out of my car. I didn't let that bother me though. I had just unlocked my door, did my little peeking and came inside. I wasn't inside for five minutes when there was a knock on my door. At first, it startled me. Nobody should come to visit me. I had gone to unlock my door, with shaking fingers might I add, and swung my door open to reveal a woman and two children standing on the other side.“Hello. Welcome to our neighborhood. I baked you some muffins and my kids wanted to make you a welcome sign” The lady had spoken softly, keeping a hand on her youngest son.I expected this, honestly. Small towns. P
It had been almost a week since I moved here, three days, since I had gone over to Anna's parent's house to eat tacos. She and I have grown a bit close the last few days. She works as a secretary for some rich man.I can't remember his name right currently, but her hours are sometimes long. I have been trying to get my sleep schedule straight before I start my new job, which is tomorrow morning. I'm excited and I'm nervous. Anna and I talk on the phone every night for about an hour. Telling each other stories of our childhood. She had begged me to go out to the Sleepy Sheep after devouring those Tacos, but after dealing with her brother and what he had said, I wasn't exactly in the mood to party. After eating I thanked Helen and Glenn, which I learned was Anna and Cedric's dad's name. They were extremely nice, and both told me I was invited over anytime. Nothing suspicious has happened the past several days, leading me to conclude that maybe Cedric was right. Possibly nobody broke
Once I put my purse and lunch up, I head towards the call center room, gently pushed the door open and smiled when I saw four heads turning my way.“Hey babe, you must be Avery.” Says a woman a little older than me.Babe?“Um-” I started to say, but cut myself off because I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to add. I have never been called babe, expect from my cheating ex. “Yeah” “Welcome to the center. I'm Megan. The other two ladies and, of course, the gentlemen are Rick, Sheila, and Wanda.” Megan explained as she pointed to each one while saying their names.“Nice to meet you all.” I replied, smiled and headed towards the only empty desk left in the room. It's a pleasant room, not too big. It has five computer system setups and not much space left for another one. I won't what will happen with Sean when he passes the test. Will Mr. Whitlock have another desk moved in somewhere?“Shoo. I'm pleased to meet you, Avery. We have been waiting for someone to fill that chair up for almo
The past two days went by slowly. I woke up, fixed me breakfast, and packed a lunch because I learned that I was unable to leave the building for lunchtime. We only had five 911 operators, and Mr. Whitlock wanted to make sure we were all available to deal with the phones if they rang. He said three of us can't go to lunch and leave the other two to answer five phones and vice versa. I understand completely, so I didn't mind bringing my lunch. Though, I would rather not have sandwiches every day. I need to get used to my new schedule. I have been getting home around six pm. after being at work since earlier that morning.Fast food saves time and lives. Not really. My booty and hips don't agree. But who cares? When you work late and don't have time to take anything out to thaw for supper, it does indeed save my life.I had gotten to know my coworkers a little better throughout the past few days. Wanda has one daughter who's in kindergarten and is divorced. He didn't want to work, so
As soon as I slid into Anna's car, I heard her cat calling. I didn't even close the door, yet before she hyped me up.“Look at you! You look hot!” She screeched playfully. So does she.She is wearing a black dress, strapless, with will lace designs going across in several spots. “Look who's talking.” I giggled and closed the door.“You ready to hit it?” She asked as she put the car in drive and pulled out of my driveway. Of course, I'm reading to hit it. I didn't get this dressed up for anything. Sheesh. Therefore, I inform her I am indeed ready to hit it.“Hell yeah” I mimicked her screech of excitement, causing her to laugh.“You will love my brother's friends. They are cool. They treat me like a child” She stops to roll her eyes before adding, “but they still cool”“No offense, but I'd rather not come into contact with your brother on my first night out.” I groaned and glanced pitiful as I looked over at her. “He will be there. They hang there every Friday night. It's a standing
The next few hours, Anna and I were both much drunker than we intended to get. She carried on ordering drinks, and I continued on drinking them. It's not her fault, though. I know when to stop, I just chose not to. Instead, I kept on drinking, dancing and even learned to twerk. After Anna and I watched Cedric and his partner and also best friend Lucas hog the pool table for thirty minutes, Anna practically laid herself across the pool table, demanding that it was our turn. Cedric and Lucas either were done playing or just didn't want to deal with her tantrum, but they both handed us their cue sticks and stepped back. We were horrible at it. We kept knocking the balls so hard with the pool stick that they ended up flying off the table and onto the floor with loud bangs. One even hit the wall. My fault. I never played before. I tried telling her I never played before and wouldn't be good at it, but she didn't want to hear it. She still wanted to play and taunted that she could beat
