To Much Troubles

After the crying fit in the bathroom we had cleaned ourselves up looking presentable once more. Before quietly slinking back to our post. My fear was to be caught slacking on my job here tonight. Something that just wouldn't do. I felt slightly better about the whole situation now that we had discussed it. “I wish they had told me.” I spoke softly to Vivian.

Seeing her nod her head in response.

I went back to observing the room when my eyes locked on a figure dressed in black. My best guess a male. He ducked his head down before turning away. He wandered about not seemingly too interested in anything. Or anyone for that matter. Strange. Most people were always at the Mating Ball for something.

He had neatly trimmed black hair. Definitely pale. Paler than normal anyway. I tried to catch his scent but it seemed to have vanished.

“Who are you looking at?” Vivian leaned towards me. “Some guy catch your attention?” She quizzed, “I am impressed, who is it?” She said slowly slipping her eyes around many of the males in the room.

I wordlessly nodded my head towards the black outfitted man.

“Ooo, he looks dangerous! I wonder how good he is..” Vivian nudged my side trailing off suggestively.

“Oh, cut it out!” I hissed my cheeks tinting, “He just looks suspicious that’s all.” I said matter of factly starting to feel flustered.

“Eh, I don't know he seems to be looking at you.” Vivian drawled.

“What! Who? Where!” I yelped. Darting my head around for the shadowy dude.

Vivian cackled “kidding, you should go talk to him.” Vivian encouraged pushing me forward.

“We are here on a mission.” I said sternly “Besides he looks, oh I don't know completely uninterested in everyone here!” I growled back.

Vivian stilled “hey Val.” She stopped watching something behind me.

I followed her gaze seeing four more men. Their attire matched the previous male. Nearly hidden by shadows in their dark outfits. They swirled around with watchful eyes, one grabbed a drink downing it before meeting in the centre of the room.

“I’m mind-linking the Alpha.” I spoke my gaze still watching them.

Vivian narrowed her eyes in hopes of seeing something.

I was about to open the link when I heard clapping. Alpha Woods was making his way up to the stage. His speech! I paled glancing back at Vivian mouth agape. There was nothing we could do now.

“Go drift towards Kayla. Protect her!” I whispered at her.

Giving me a brisk nod she slipped in the crowd being hidden from view. I bit my lip mulling over my options.

“Welcome fellow Wolves! I welcome you to the Mating Ball!” Alpha Woods started his voice booming throughout the room.

I looked back to the men stiffening. I had lost the fifth one! I swallowed panic arising as I scanned the room once more. “Damn, I’m getting backup” I growled under my breath thinking of the other guards here.

“Oh Love, I wouldn't do that.” A chilling voice fanned against my neck.

I spun around. Seeing the dark haired man I saw from earlier. I flashed him a glare before dashing into the crowd. Only to be yanked back suddenly. My head spun in protest as I was now nearly sprawled against him. He had grabbed my wrist! The nerve of this guy!

He chuckled “Love, lest me I remind you.” I felt him move closer his lips now brushing my ear. “Don’t move.” His commanding voice came from behind me once more.

I replied by growling at him. Flashing my elongated canines in his face. “Release me, you bastard!” I hissed squirming.

“Just watch. The fun is about to begin.” The man tilted my face towards the stage where Alpha Woods now spoke confidently about borders and praising his daughter.

“Now I would like to remind everyone of the rules.” Alpha Woods spoke right as an arrow whizzed over everyone's heads. Impaling him in the neck.

I watched horror struck. Seeing my Alphas eyes widen in shock. He locked eyes with me opening a mind-link ‘Get Kayla to safety’ I heard his voice fade near the end. A second later his body went slack landing on the floor with a dull thud.

I muffled in a cry. My Alpha was dead. Meaning Kayla was now the Alpha of the pack.

Chaos erupted wolves running around in panic triggering others into a frenzy. The males now with mates grabbed them and fled the room. Leaving us single wolves to go fight it out for the exit.

The man holding me started chuckling at my continued struggle to get free. I maneuvered myself enough to kick him in the knee. He flinched grip loosening a fraction. Using that as a distraction I wiggled away darting into the crowd.

I turned back to the black haired man again. His four other ‘friends’ now flanking him on either side. “What did you do!” I roared while my wolf tried to get free. Using my willpower alone to keep her on a tight leash.

“Love, I did you a favour.” He spread his hands out “This my dear.” He paused letting the words sink in “This is just the beginning.” He flashed a devilish grin.

“This.” I stated, clenching my teeth. “This is hell.”

A man on his flank chuckled at my response his curly brown nearly covering his eyes “You have no idea what you’ve gotten into girl.” He reasoned quirking a brow.

The guy who had grabbed me before I assumed was the leader of their little group. As he took a threatening step towards me. “Sorry about this Love.” He opened his hands. Letting out plumes of pure darkness and shadows.

I had lost my Alpha, and now the unfortunate others whose bodies now littered the floor. This was chaos! The man’s shadows started taking a more humanoid appearance as they attacked the wolves with talons as they struggled to escape. I gulped, all this magic. Dark evil magic. What would that make mine? The thought kept fluttering around my brain as more wolves ran out.

I stiffened hearing Kayla scream.

She was surrounded by two Shadows. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Jacob sneak past. He just left. Leaving us here to fend for ourselves or die! Left his mate to fend for herself. He didn't even bother to glance back as he scurried out the entrance.

Where had Vivian gone? She was with Kayla a second ago...

A yard or so away from Kayla, Vivian was cutting down the Shadows like butter. She had taken out her dagger from the silver necklace. Our mother had our necklaces specially crafted to revealed a deadly dagger with just a thought. Her silver blade had an orange gem on the pommel which glinted in the light. The look on her face told me she meant business as her her eyes were blazing with fury.

Not taking another moment to think twice. I leapt into action. These Shadows hadn't seen anything yet. For the event was just getting started.

That was when all hell broke loose.
