Looming Shadows

Darting towards Kayla I stepped in front of her in a defensive stance. Willing my necklace out into dagger form, I quickly slashed out at the nearing Shadows. The dagger passed right through even though it was a blow to the chest. Impossible!

I guess the Shadow dude altered his Shadows a bit. As Vivian was now struggling with her blade as well. The Shadow seeing my hesitation quickly lunged talons ready to slice me to ribbons..

I ducked sending my dagger back into necklace form. Our blades were pointless when facing a creature like this. Kayla was still in the corner crying which sparked irritation in me. I understand her father died and all but come on, I’m facing off with two of these Shadow creatures over here. While she is going into shock.

The second Shadow lunged at Kayla while I dodged another blow twitching my finger ever so slightly. A wall of ice now separated Kayla from the Shadow. In doing so it also separating her from me.

“Kayla get out of here!” I hollered over the Shadow which hissed in surprise.

“I’m not leaving you!” She commanded darting her eyes around finally gathering her thoughts. ,

I gritted my teeth “Kayla. Get out. Now. For everyone.” I barked slowly emphasized each word as if talking to a startled lamb.

Kayla locked onto my gaze thinking. I could almost see all the gears turning in her head. A Beta giving an Alpha orders gave her the right to punish me. However after seeing my magic she seemed to snap back to reality, “Alright.”

I watched her stumble through the door. Once she fled I planted ice over the door preventing the Shadows from pursuing my packmates. We were now locked in the ballroom with these psychos.

With that issue out of the way. I threw an ice dagger at the Shadow that tried to claw me. It dissipated into black mist. Yuck!

The second Shadow was now slinking behind me, I turned freezing it in place. Then willed the ice to crumble. It wailed as it shattered upon hitting the marble.

“Val!” Vivian cried from across the room. She had six Shadows circling clicking menacingly. While she flashed her dagger at them in hopes of warding them off with little result.

‘Use your magic the blades won’t do anything.’ I mindlinked racing over.

A second later the flames engulfed four of the Shadows. Vivian rolled away grinning as the flames danced in her eyes, she was in her element.

The four ‘henchman’ as I have now decided to call them went for their swords looking frustrated. Only to be paused as the leader lifted his hand.

“Leave these two. Leave them for me.” The shadow leader spoke to the males behind him. He flashed me a devilish smile in the process.

I scowled as my hands twirled around me. Ice was slowly creeping up the floor beneath my feet.

“How about I offer you a deal darling?” The leader questioned cheerfully. Not like he had just killed a few people or anything.

I ignored his proposition, instead launched an ice shard at him. He moved with feline like grace moving to dodge, but not fast enough. The shard still sliced across his shoulder. Leaving a light trail of blood from the wound. Even with his speed I was still able to draw blood. I smiled at my feate.

The man narrowed his eyes at me tutting, “Now that was really stupid”

How was that stupid? My attacking him or ignoring his offer? I rolled my eyes feeling my patience flicker “You killed my Alpha, and trespassed on our land. Not only that you have disrupted a ceremony killing at least twenty wolves in the process.” I took a step towards him squaring my shoulders.

Inwardly, I wanted to just get the hell out of here. Sadly another part of me reasoned claiming that I couldn't. I had to buy the others wolves time in hopes of escape.

The man clenched his jaw “Oh come on that lousy Alpha! As for the others casualties do occur.” He shrugged nonchalantly. His henchmen were watching our exchange with keen interest.

“Really? Casualties? You talk of peoples lives like it is some sick game to you!” I seethed now a few feet away from him.

‘Uh, Val I’m throwing a fireball your way in a second or two. Just a heads up.’ Vivian's voice traveled via mindlink.

The man stared at my outburst purely shocked. I saw two of the four men beside him pale. “Love, you are either very daring, or very stupid.” The leader said staring me down.

I smiled flickering my eyes over his shoulder to his henchmen. “Oh I doubt that.” I said jumping to the side as Vivian’s fireball flew. Hitting him square in the chest.

The man wiped at his charred clothes. I’m assuming based off the fact the man was still alive that magic against another magic wielder was weaker.

The leaders eyes glowed obsidian black. Right as he vanished in shadow. I stared at the now empty space blinking dumbfounded. He could teleport? That is so unfair!

Vivian started picking her way towards me. Broken tables and chairs now littered the floor, a few bodies among them. Her expression was grim while she seemed to be debating on dragging me out of here or not.

That’s when I saw the dude appear behind her. Vivian was clearly oblivious to the fact that he was nearing her. I opened my mouth in warning but was too late.

“Surprise.” He whispered in her ear.

She froze making to burn him when he hit her over the head. I watched in horror as she crumbled to the floor.

I stuffled in a scream my heart dropping. The man stepped around her as though a piece of furniture. “I have been searching for people like you.” He said softly tilting his head my way.

If I hadn't seen him murder people a few minutes ago. I would actually think he was decent. Now I knew they were all honey-coated words. “Shame that you suck at first impressions then.” I spat a curse after pointing out the obvious.

“Why Love, a lady like you shouldn't be talking with that sort of mouth.” He smirked.

“I don't care about how I should be talking. I’m talking. So I’m saying as I damn please.” I scoffed pointing a finger at him.

The men behind him laughed. Being silenced by a glare.

“I’m not going to hurt you.” He hummed more to himself.

“Really? And I should believe that why?” I mimicked his tone glancing down as the floor beneath crept with ice. Now I had an advantage.

“Love, in the end we are all murderers” He purred behind me. Suddenly pain erupted in the back of my skull. As dots flashed in my vision. I gave one last glare towards the henchmen who were still watching from afar.

One of them, a male with startling sapphire eyes stiffened taking a few cautious steps forward. He appeared to be talking to the leader above me. Though with my ringing ears all I could see was black spots as they conversed before being engulfed in the claiming blackness. Maybe we should of left before the ball...
