Chapter 4

My parents were both Omegas from the Silver Spring Pack. Our family was not high up in the pack, and the Silver Spring Pack was not very powerful, so we were often attacked by the rogues.

I was once pursued by a rogue on the pack frontier. I was in heat back then, and I was afraid he would hurt me.

Just as the rogue tackled me and was about to bite my neck with his sharp fangs, Derek showed up. He beat the rogue, and I was very grateful to him.

The next day, my parents brought me to the hotel where Derek lived to thank him.

What surprised me was the mate's smell from his body.

I was a little confused because I felt nothing when I saw him yesterday. However, the mate's smell was so intoxicating that I had no time to think more.

Derek looked at me and said in surprise, "Mate!"

Just like that, I married Derek, and then I came to Los Angeles with him.

As far as my parents were concerned, Derek was always a nice man. He cherished me, and he respected my parents.

If it were before, I would have believed that Derek was nice to my parents genuinely, but now I had to wonder what he was up to.

I looked at my parents, and their eyes were full of concern for me. How was I supposed to tell them that my husband, my mate, cheated on me?

Derek put on a show. He looked very sad, choked, and told my parents that I suspected him for no reason.

My parents weren't skeptical at all. On the contrary, they started to blame me.

"Cynthia, Derek is a great husband. How can you suspect him? You will break his heart."

My mother immediately pulled Derek to the sofa.

She had always treated Derek as her own son, and we did get along very well once.

But now, I began to suspect that Derek had ulterior motives for everything he had done before.

"What do you want exactly?" I stared at Derek's face.

My parents were the pack's Omegas, and they were always worried about me, afraid that I would not be happy. Therefore, I didn't dare to tell them about Derek.

I could only throw a tantrum at him.

Derek shed tears. He grabbed my hand and tried to say something, but I felt so sick that I threw his hand away.

"Cynthia, stop it, OK? Let's go back to the Beech Pack," Derek said.

I finally went back home, and I had no intention of going back with him at all. Besides, the sight of him sickened me.

I looked at Derek impatiently and sneered with disdain.

"I won't go back with you. I'll divorce you," I said.

"Cynthia, go back with Derek. You guys should sit down and talk. Don't make a fuss. You are not divorcing him," said my father immediately.

Now that my father, who had always loved me the most, had said so, I could no longer refuse them.

I had no choice but to grit my teeth and nod.

On the flight back, Derek tried to hug me, but I was disgusted with him, so I turned away, ignoring his every attempt to make apologies or confessions.

Yet he kept trying to please me. I was so annoyed that I went and hid in the lavatory on the plane.

Looking at the empty sink, I couldn't help but think of Lucas.

We did it in the plane's lavatory, and back then, I was the one who seduced Lucas frivolously. As I recalled the scenes that day, I blushed right away.

I washed my face with cold water, dried my hands, and went out.

As soon as we got home, Fiona, Derek's mother, ran crying toward me and hugged me.

Fiona was very nice to me. Even though I had been married to Derek for two years, and I was never pregnant, she always smiled and comforted me.

Fiona would be devastated if she found out about Derek's affair.

Fiona made me some creamy mushroom soup and urged me to eat more. She stroked my face, feeling distressed, and said that I had lost weight, though it had only been a few days.

She looked at Derek reproachfully and asked him to have a nice chat with me. If we were to get a divorce, she'd be the first to say no.

Whenever I quarreled with Derek, Fiona always took my side and lectured him. She treated me like her own daughter, which gave me and my broken heart some comfort.

I finished the soup in the dining room, and the warm feeling in my stomach calmed me down a bit. Derek took me to the bedroom, saying that he had something to say.

I readily agreed. I came back this time so that I could break up with him for good.

He closed the door and continued to quibble, which sounded nothing but feeble to me.

"Cynthia, have some faith in me. How could I do something like that?" His endless tears made me feel that I was looking at a stranger. How long was he going to lie to me?

I looked at his face, my heart turned cold, and I said, "I saw everything in the video. How long are you going to defend yourself?"

He looked at me in disbelief, and then he knelt.

I got a bit soft-hearted at the scene. After all, he was my mate whom I had loved for five years, and I couldn't forget everything we had so quickly.

"Cynthia, whatever you saw was fake. Someone is trying to sabotage our relationship!"

He spoke with the same certainty as when he had said his wedding vows to me.

My heart was broken. I turned on my laptop.

I said, "Do you want to see it yourself?"

I paused the video on my laptop. I closed my eyes, not knowing what Derek's face looked like right now.

I certainly hoped that everything was what he said, that someone wanted to ruin our relationship.

I was the one who most wanted the video to be fake.

Derek was silent. With evidence before him, there was nothing he could say.

His silence made my hope vanish gradually. I knew that I could no longer fool myself.

Anyone could tell that it was his face in the video and no one had messed with the footage.

"The day I called you, you said you'd be right back, but what happened? It has been three days since I left the Beech Pack, and you only show up at my parents' place now. You don't give a damn at all. Then why bother?" I asked sadly.

If he had come right back that day and explained it all to me, I might have been able to believe him, but it turned out that I was not important to him at all.
