Daryl cozied into bed, a cup of warm cocoa in her hands.
Beryl and Daff sprawled across the other side of the bed with mugs of their own.
“So, you’re a Half-fairy and you need to escape the hands of someone who’s trying to kill you.”
Her friend’s cousin nodded, “That’s right.”
Daryl watched in amazement. She could only believe what the pretty girl said owing to the large, deep-purple wings that looked heavy.
“Do,” she wanted to know more, “do you know other fairies or other- mythical people?”
Daff nodded with a pleasant smile, “I haven’t seen many types. I’ve only ever seen Elves, Merpeople and one Centaur one time.”
Daryl gaped, “What?! Where are you guys when I’m walking through the woods?”
Daff laughed, “Well, mom and I live in a cottage a little into the woods but most of my dad’s family live deep in the forest. They need to be surrounded by nature to stay healthy.”
Daryl nodded like that made sense, “And where did you see Merpeople?”
“We visit them every once in a while to keep touch.”
“In the forest?”
Beryl rolled her eyes, “Yes, Daryl, in the forest. They came crawling across the forest floor.”
Daryl threw up her hands in defense, “There are rivers and ponds and stuff, Beryl. Sorry for not being an expert on this!”
Daff had dissolved into giggles at her cousin’s comment.
Beryl laughed, “Maybe they need to be surrounded by water, you dummy.”
Daff nodded, “They actually prefer the depth of oceans. We come together to meet once in a few years. Picking an Island is ideal.”
Daryl raised an eyebrow as she chuckled, “So the humans are not invited when you have your little gatherings?”
The pink-haired beauty smiled, “Human are the domineering race. There are too many. It’ll be easy to destroy the other races or bring them into subjection so-“
Daryl nodded, dropping her smile at Daff’s sad tone, “Oh, right. Uh, you guys are afraid we might harm you.”
“Not all of you,” Daff smiled, “We’re just worried about your higher-ups.”
Beryl sighed, “Aren’t we all?”
Daff shook her head, “Mom is very popular among the merpeople.”
Beryl snapped up in surprise, “Aunt Agnes?”
There was a pleasant laugh from Daff when she nodded, “She suggests the most outrageous swimming challenges.”
Something about her tone of voice that indicated happy and silly memories put Daryl in a warm mood.
“What about your dad? You guys go together on your trips?” Daryl couldn’t help the question. Daff’s father seemed so mysterious and out of reach and yet, so closely related to the entire situation.
Daff nodded, “My dad is always close. Sometimes, he grows really frail spending too much time at the cottage and has to recuperate by flying back into the woods.”
“Flying, right.” Daryl looked over to give Beryl a look as if to say there was only so much she could take in a day.
Beryl laughed, “What about you, Daff? It makes sense why you wouldn’t visit much. How did I not see wings when you visited that Christmas?”
The half-fairy’s wings fluttered gently, “I can’t hide my wings until I get a good amount of sunshine and honey. Also, a lot more sleep than is normal.”
“So, if you get enough of those things, you can hide your wings?”
Daff nodded.
Daryl looked back at the warm chocolate in her cup. There was so much to take in but they had started to bond so quickly.
“We have our first day early in the morning, Daryl.”
Daryl looked up to see Beryl get off the bed.
“We can stay up a little longer, Ber.”
Beryl shook her head no as she reached to remove her facemask, “Any longer and we’ll be really tired tomorrow.”
Daryl shrugged, “I guess so.”
She looked over at the pretty girl who was chugging down her hot chocolate, “Will you stay at home tomorrow, Daphne?”
Daff and Beryl looked over in surprise.
“Wha- she can’t come to uni with us.”
Beryl laughed, “Her name is Daffodil. They’re Aunt Agnes’ favourite flowers.”
Daff smiled, “My dad used them to propose. I think he gets her a bouquet every month.”
Daryl felt her heart tug. They sounded like a cute family.
“It’s not a common name but it definitely suits you!” She gave the half-fairy a warm smile.
Daff smiled back, “Thank you, Daryl! Thank you for being so kind. I know my visit is rather sudde-“
Daryl shook her head no, feeling responsible for the girl, “It’s absolutely not. We love your company.”
She watched the girl’s widened eyes. Were they purple?
“You’re welcome to form part of our friend group for as long as you want.”
The waves tossed mercilessly in the moonlight.
Watching the inviting glisten on the waters, a boy stood at the very fringe of the sands.
It had been a week or more since he’d taken a dive.
Removing his hoodie, he tossed it away in the sand before thronging through the waves.
After a long pause, he took a deep plunge into the sea.
A burning spread through his chest before dissipating as he went farther and farther into the darkness of the underwater, legs rhythmically pushing back in strong motions.
As he made it closer and closer into the water, a pulsing rush of energy coursed through his body and he groaned, realizing how much he had really weakened over the week.
A new semester started the next day and the boy was determined to suck in as much strength as he could before returning to the beach.
He stopped pushing through the water and let his body drift through the space, feeling a force of power course through his veins. It felt good to be surrounded by the sea again.
The green streak reaching through his hair glowed in the dark of the water.
He sighed when he thought of the cute girl he’d seen that day. She had a cute nose and her hair had been pulled up into such a shabby ponytail. He smiled when he thought of her waving back to him, hesitantly and yet with so much confidence.
It was upsetting that there were so many people he couldn’t get close to; so many people he couldn’t completely allow into his life because of the secret he had to keep.
Thinking of the words of the professor, he sighed, watching bubbles rise up from his mouth.
Damon was on the move. The next few months would be tricky; maybe even dangerous.
Daryl twirled in front of the mirror once. She’d combed her golden hair down and her jeans fit her perfectly. It was the first day of University and she was beyond excited.Dragging herself out of bed had been annoying until she’d remembered Beryl and she would finally walk into a new year together. She picked her bag up and walked out of her room. The smell of freshly baked muffins beckoned her from the kitchen. She walked into see her gorgeous friends seated at the counter with her new Half-fairy friend.Large, purplish-blue wings extended from her back through two slits formed into her grey sweatshirt.“Hey,” Daryl reached for one of the muffins and took a seat herself.Beryl had a few papers out on the counter and Daff was busy spooning a gooey dollop of honey into her mouth, “Hey, Daryl!”Daryl smiled when she saw Daff’s cheeks glisten with trails of sticky
Students filed slowly out of the library, each having received their Library passes. There was an excitement in the air with the start of a new term.A stress-free mood reigned with the young boys and girls walking around getting accustomed to walking along the corridors of the university with no burden of assignments or lessons yet.Professor Theodore stood away from the current of students; his shoulder leaned against a large shelf of books. He watched the lazy group of kids, scanning them for a certain tall boy; a student who had promised to speak with him before classes began. He sighed. He caught a slight scent of Half-myth. Someone of the students that he hadn’t yet met it seemed.Usually, this would excite him.Half-Myths were not common. It was extremely rare to find a Half-Myth. A scent of Half-Myth in the area would make him incredibly happy. The professor would love to walk around and trace the
Daffodil pulled her waist-length soft hair into a pink bun.She had just finished setting the washed dishes into the cupboard. She looked around the house a little lost on what to do next.Laundry? She was familiar with a few things that required doing when you lived in a human household. She rummaged through a few shelves and then the fridge. There was enough food in stock for a few days.Holding onto the Dream Acorn that formed a bracelet around her wrist, she sighed. She knew she was being a burden.Daryl and Beryl looked so close and friendly and now, they had to deal with a complete stranger staying with them and eating their food with no idea when she would leave. With a determined expression, the young half-fairy stalked to the window of the kitchen.Strong shafts of sunlight slanted in and Daff settled on the floor.Closing her eyes, she stayed completely still and let her body bathe in th
Professor Theodore walked along the corridor to his next class.Abel had asked to see him that morning but hadn’t showed up at the library. The tall professor sighed. The boy probably didn’t harbour any feelings of guilt about it either. He was always so quiet and completely inaccessible sometimes.Professor Theodore had had an unusual amount of trouble getting Abel to open up when they’d first met but now, the two were incredibly close. Most of Abel’s story was still unknown to Theodore but now and then, Abel opened up with a throng of feelings and stories before clamping up again. He didn’t even seem to consciously process how closed off he was.Theodore glanced into one of the classrooms as he walked by.Being a Half-Myth himself, he mostly understood how lonely most of their kind could feel but Abel and Ethan seemed like they were in more distressing positions than most others
Theodore sat at a table in the large library.Sunlight slanted in through the windows behind him, his shoulders and the back of his head slowly growing warm with their attention. He had a few blank sheets of paper out in front of him and a stack of books at his side. He’d sent word to the boys to come see him when their classes ended and now, he waited. The professor hoped he wouldn’t be dragging the boys into something that would kill them. It was sure to be dangerous but he definitely needed their help if he was to try to track down all the Half-Myths in the area to warn them or offer them safety. He looked up at the familiar scent of the two boys entering the library, a fair distance away from where he sat.Abel towered over his blond friend, his body built sturdier and eyes always kept hidden under the hood of his hoodie. The Half-Merman had it in him to be a terrifying swimmer but had chosen not to pursue sw
Beryl looked at Daryl in confusion. What was she dragging them into now?She really hoped her tall friend wasn’t planning on throwing Daffodil into the mess. The pretty professor straightened before placing a hand on her hip, her face annoyed, “Our last librarian had a Masters in Library Science. Think your candidate can match that?”The two gaped.Beryl didn’t know you needed a Degree to be a librarian.“W-well, I’m sure she’ll be better than doing the work all by yourself,” Daryl looked genuinely confused, “How is it a bad idea to hire someone temporarily?”Beryl quickly stepped in when she saw the lady’s face glare, “A temporary help might relieve you is what my friend is saying.”The lady looked very irritated with them and frankly, Beryl was mad at herself. It wasn’t very mature of her to lose her Library Card on the
Daffodil skipped along behind her friends, her heart soaring.Daryl and Beryl were in good spirits as well, laughing away and occasionally turning around to check and make sure Daffodil’s wings weren’t poking out.Daffodil smiled to herself, stomach aflutter with the excitement of a new day and a new experience. She couldn’t believe the girls had actually landed her a job!The thought of meeting new humans and doing things on her own thrilled her.It had been a long time since her last human interaction without her mother by her side and the incident had definitely scarred her and insured her mother forbidding any outings anymore.Daffodil felt a little guilty feeling so happy when her mother and father were probably rather panicked elsewhere. The pretty fairy sighed and straightened the collar of the shirt she was wearing.Temporarily, and for as long as she was around, she would be useful an
Daffodil walked into a massive library. A large empty space lay ahead of her on entering with a large window opposite that bathed the smooth floor with sunlight. The floor began carpeted a little distance to her right and spread on underneath shelves and shelves of books. Only two students sat at a table underneath the large window and Daffodil couldn’t help the feeling of gentle warmth stir in her stomach.Such an expansive place and she would love to manage it for the time she was there.Daryl had said it was a ‘temporary’ job and the petite Half-Fairy hoped she would be able to keep her job for longer than just a few days. Her two friends stood just outside the library, helping a student find a classroom and Daffodil turned around to watch the door, waiting for them to return. She wished she could continue to work in the Library for as long as possible. It had such a serene ambience and was so bright and calm t
