The next morning was bright and seemed cheerful to Beryl.

She paused to watch her chocolate brown hair wave in the mirror.

Satisfied, she set her brush down and threw on the dark-blue shrug she was pairing with her white tank top.

She left her bedroom and walked past the door of Daryl’s.

Her lips lifted in a smile.

Beryl had assumed Daffodil, her cousin, would share her bed since her sudden arrival but Daryl had bonded with Daffodil too quickly and now, the pair stayed up late talking until they fell asleep in their room.

It was possible, Beryl knew, because of Daryl’s friendly nature and sweet heart.

Daffodil was no less kind herself but for such a tender friendship to blossom so quickly, Daryl seemed the biggest cause.

Walking into the kitchen, Beryl caught sight of her pink-haired cousin at work near the stove.

Pancakes sat on the counter, warm and soft to look at.
