Chapter Twenty-Four

“Halt!  Who goes there?” called a male vampire who was holding vigil over Kenton’s home.

“It’s Maryanne Cramby,” my mother called out.  “I’ve got my daughter with me.”

“Come ahead,” the vampire said in a gruff tone.

I followed my mother as she carefully approached the house.  It seemed to me that we were playing with worse fire than if we’d stayed at home and dealt with Michael.  After all, the vampires were at war with the werewolves – of which my mother was now one- and they ate fairies for snacks -as I’d already experienced with Cindy. 

I watched as the vampire pulled out his cell phone and made a quick call.  His entire demeanor shifted from gruff and threatening to pleasant and inviting once the call had ended.
