Twenty Two

Don was standing in silence with his back against the wall with his eyes lost in the night sky. He was breathing, heavily. Selena was on the ground on the other side, sobbing aloud without any attempt to look up at him.

Isabella could see the third body on the ground and he was gasping for breath. A rapid surge of adrenaline sent her running to him, damning everything else. She knelt down in front of him and assessed the damage quickly as she picked his head gently onto her lap. He opened his eyes slowly, meeting hers directly in the faint light afforded by the moon, and she began crying. He would never really understand how patient she had been for him.

“What happened?” she begged, turning to Selena. “Why is he bleeding?” No one was saying anything.
