Chapter 11

Evie

I cried myself to sleep for the umpteenth night in a row. I've been here longer than Hetty and Eli. I barely remember a time before being here. Sometimes I dream of my mother. Her soft green eyes, framed by her light brown curls. The same eyes I see in the mirror. Her voice, a melody, she calls to me. I don't even remember her name. If it wasn't for Carla insisting we be called by our given names, I probably wouldn't even remember my own.

I wake in a curled heap by my door as I blink the crust from my eyes. There's a knock on the door, that's Beck, one of the lab hands. He's learned to knock before bringing my breakfast since I tend to sleep against it. I roll over and whisper for him that I'm clear. He cracks the door and pokes his head in before pushing the door all the way open.

"Morning Eve. Brought your 'blek'fast for you." He has a warm smile. He's the only one that calls me Eve instead of Evie or Evonleigh. I chuckle at his play on words and his smile widens. "We've got th
