Chapter 2: Unbelievable

Walking out the door, she gets mixed feelings of sadness and regret, but also a sense of panic grips her again.  As she returns home, she gets the mail and sets it on her kitchen table.  When she eats dinner later that night, she notices the letter from the attorney.

"That's odd."  She remarks to herself as she opens it.  Reading the letter, she moves to the living room and sits down in her leather recliner.  "Wow!  Is this real?"  The letter details how her dad she never knew had died and left her quite a bit of money.  In order to transfer the money to her account, she must meet with the attorney.

Shocked, she briefly thinks to call her mom and ask her why she told her that her father had been dead for so many years.  This was clearly not the case.  What would make her lie to her all these years?

Instead of confronting her immediately, she decides to wait till after the meeting with the attorney.  She would call him first thing in the morning, considering it was the evening.  No one will be open at this hour.

Putting the letter down, she enters the number of the lawyer in her contacts and presses the save button.  There, I will call first thing in the morning.  She promises herself.  Then she sits back and tries to calm down.

First, she listens to the news and then goes through her social media account.  She soon realizes that it is very hard to stay calm.  Finally, after hours of wondering what happened she goes to bed.  There she at least can dream of many different possibilities.

Waking up at 7 am, she takes a shower and then makes some fried eggs and raisin bread toast with strawberry jam.  "Yum!  My favorite."  After she eats and gets a glass of water, she gets out of her bathrobe and puts on a sundress with matching sandals.  She despises high heels, but when she worked at the office, she always wore them.  It made her look more sophisticated.

Today, however she wanted to be comfortable for what might be a long day.  Who knows?  Today could very well be the next chapter of her life.  Specially if she finds out she will be set for life.  Kaitlyn has always wanted to travel the world.  Now with no job, no love life, or any other restrictions, she could if she has enough money.

The trick is, even if it is a small sum of money but enough to travel for a while, she would just have to get a job when she got back.  Or maybe just start over somewhere else.  Perhaps she will go to France or the Caribbean and then just stay there.  But first things first, it was time to call the attorney and meet up.

Two hours later, she finds herself in the office of Johnson and Johnson's law offices.  She sits in a small room with tasteful decor.  Art pieces are on the walls and the throw rugs are absolutely intricate.  She obsessively starts to fidget with her sundress as she runs her fingers over the smooth fabric that is cool to the touch.

She startles as the lawyer opens the door and walks in.  He smiles at her and offers a hand as he tells her his name.   "Hi, I am Todd Johnson.  My brother is about 3 minutes older than myself.  His name is Ted.  Ms. Randall, may I call you Kaitlyn?" He smiles again with his bright whites, and she sees that his teeth are remarkable.  She has only seen actors with teeth that white and perfect.

"Yes, of course you may.  I would greatly appreciate it.  I hate to be so formal it's just not really me, my mom is Ms. Randall." She states in the middle of laughing.  Todd shakes his head as he understands completely, because he hates to always be so formal.  He would much rather be in jeans and a t shirt, but his job calls for formal wear most of the time.

"Thank you for seeing me so quickly.  I know it was hard to fit me in this morning."  Kaitlyn takes his hand again.  He looks at her features and sees that she is beautiful.  Not really his taste but still very beautiful.  He prefers stacked blondes with blue eyes and no brains.  That way he doesn't have to have long conversations with them.  He can just take them out and show them a good time.

"Not a problem Kaitlyn, I want you to know that you can call me anytime.”  He hands me a business card before continuing, “This is my personal number so that if you have any questions at all you can ask away."  He sits down at his desk and ruffles through the paperwork.

"Now to it.  It seems that your estranged father left you quite a big amount of money.  Plus, he had a life insurance policy for over 10 million dollars.  After taxes and other payments, including my fees you find yourself a very wealthy woman."

"Why did he never contact me?"  she finds herself with her mouth dropped open.  "That I don't know the details of.  All I know is you were the only benefactor to his millions and his property.  So, until the time you want to close our arrangement, I will keep the money in an account he had set up for you.  You have total control of the account and everything else, but it would be wise for now to leave it in there and just take money out.  I know how difficult it can be getting used to all this." He slides forward in his seat.

"Are there any questions before I give you the documents you need to start withdrawing money from the account?" He takes her hand and reassures her it will be alright.  releasing her hand, he proceeds to give her paperwork with an account number and the total amount in the account.  She looks and her eyes simply cannot believe it, $34,991,815.23 as the amount in the account as of today.  "Holy shit!" She swears under her breath.

Soon afterwards, he gives her a document with an address and several pictures followed by directions.   "This is where he was living just before he died at the hospital.  All his things are still there.  If you ever decide to find out more about him, I am sure that you can find it from there.  He had a housekeeper who took care of emptying the fridge and any perishables.  She also took care of making sure the place was shut up tight from prying eyes."

She starts to tear up, realizing she will never have to work again.  Her dreams have come true, and in a weird turn of events her life has suddenly become what her dreams were made of.  "Thank you so much.  I just can't believe any of this.  Yesterday I got fired from my job and now I am a multimillionaire, all thanks to my father who I thought died when I was a small child."

"Well sometimes in life you have to go through hard times to find your dreams.  I hope you enjoy the rest of your life thoroughly and don't have a care in the world.  If I were you, I would travel the world and see what you have been missing."  He turns and looks out the window.

"That's exactly what I plan on doing.  At least for a bit, then who knows.  The possibilities are endless now.  Thank you once again." She states as she stands up and shakes his hand again.  As she walks out the door on a chapter of her life, a new one opens up and she finds herself smiling bigger then she has ever in her life.
