Chapter 30
Friday was one of the best days in Edwin and Co. Everyone knew it was the start of the weekend and even though there was nothing much to do during the weekend besides sports on Saturday morning, free time in the evenings, and church on Sunday morning every student of Edwin and Co. still looked forward to the weekend. I for one had a good reason to look forward to the weekend this time around because Annabel invited me to the seniors' quarters for their weekly party. I already invited Charlie to come with me as my moral support and because she begged my ears until I had to ask Annabel to let me invite her. I already had my party clothes ready! The thigh-length sweater I had gotten from Helen when we went out to shop was a good combo with my sneakers. I actually thought about inviting Helen to the party but she declined the invitation because, according to her, she had a fish to catch. Well, it seems someone has caught Helen’s eye. But the party was still at least 24 hours away. For no

Chapter 31
The class was silent as we waited for Ms. Elena to arrange the test papers. Ms. Elena is one of those teachers who love to call out the results of each student after a test. I personally find it annoying because I don’t want anyone in my business, I don’t want anyone to know whether or not I passed a test. According to Ms. Elena though, she calling out the results was a way of encouraging students to work harder. In the last mini-test we did in chemistry I had a 70% which was a B. It wasn’t too bad because I always had a D back in Lake George. It was a huge improvement and I have Annabel to thank for that. Charlie had a B+ in the last test, and not that it’s any of my business but Christian had an A+ with 99%. I swear that boy is so perfect that sometimes I think the word perfect was made for him. Something was bugging my mind though, Tyler’s results were never mentioned in class. At first, I supposed it happened like that because he was the son of the owner of the school but after a

The matron’s office was at the administrative building. I know I barely ever mention the matron or the concierge, to be honest, those two barely do much since most of their jobs were done by the prefects. This was my first time visiting the matron’s office. I actually don’t really know of anyone who visits the matron for anything since every complaint goes through the prefects to Mr. Jorge. She shared an office with the concierge who was not around at the moment. I have to commend Maximilian Edwin though, even though the matron and concierge were barely needed in the school they still had huge, well-furnished offices with fine chairs, glass tables, and the works. The matron who was a replica of Mrs. Stella, the porter who had helped me move my stuff to the hostel because apparently, she was her niece. The only difference between them was that the matron, Diana is her name, was unmarried and was much shorter and slender than her aunt Mrs. Stella. Right now Diana was filling in for her

Chapter 33
“Believe it or not, being in Edwin and Co. is starting to seem like one of the best things to happen to me.” “Why not? You got to meet the despicable Charlie Fudge, that’s enough reason to be glad you’re here.” It was Saturday morning. It was a very beautiful morning with the sun coming in from the opened windows of our room. Charlie and I had woken up early to clean our room and lay our beds. Charlie is a really good influence on me because she loves a clean room and enjoys cleaning better than me. At first, I had hated her carefulness and neatness but Charlie is the sort of person who silently influences you, and before you realize it you’re pulled by her actions, doing the things you never thought you would ever love to do. And I was becoming quite good at cleaning if I do say so myself. Since Charlie was the neater one between us she washed the toilets while I cleaned the room. I never realized it but there is this burst of fresh air that rushes into a neat room. And right now as

“Shoot!” “Stella get the ball across.” “Jess don’t travel now. Take a shot.” “Jordan! Good, pass it quickly.” Coach stood at the edge of the court shouting strategies and encouragements as we played. Sitting on the benches around the court other members of the basketball team and some other students, both seniors and juniors, sat around cheering. There was a chain fence that separated the court from the main sports area. The sun was high already and sweat dripped down our bodies as we played, running around the basketball court and taking shots at the hoops and scoring. My legs were aching since we’d been playing for over an hour. My shirt was wet and it clung to my body, as did the shirts of every other person that was playing. I bounced the ball in front of me and passed it to Jane, dodging the small forward of the opposing team. Jane was surprisingly quick to throw the ball inside the other team's hoop for a three-pointer. My team hooted and high-fived each other. Jordan was on

Chapter 35
I promised myself that I was not going to let the outburst with Heather destroy my mood but I could not keep the slight guilt from choking me that I was indeed at fault for causing a rift between Lola and Heather, even though one way or another the truth of Heather’s betrayal would have come to light. As much as I felt guilty I was surprised at Heather’s reaction to the whole thing, she made it look like it was entirely my fault. And even her apology to Lola was more like she was trying to prove that Tyler would have cheated on her with anybody like it didn’t matter she was the one caught with him. There was just something cold-blooded in her reaction to everything and I was actually kind of worried for her because it was a sign that she was in denial of her fault in the whole thing. “You better take care, you look like you’re about to poke a hole through that nice dress.” Charlie was zipping up her leather shorts. She had chosen leather shorts with a halter top and leather boots for

The path to the seniors' quarters was a bit dark. Charlie and I talked as we walked there together. She was boasting about how much alcohol she could handle. She was planning to get blindly drunk. I could not afford to drink too much since I was attending church at the chapel tomorrow. One thing I cannot afford right now is going to church with a headache from a hangover. The lights of the senior quarter gate were on, casting rays of light on the dark path that led to the drive. The last time I was here there were a few cars parked in the driveway but today there were like a dozen cars. The gates were closed as always but there were a couple of people standing outside pressing the buzzer, they weren’t people I recognized so I assumed they were from another school. Another benefit of being a final-year student is inviting people from other schools over. “I cannot wait to be a final year already! Just imagine all the free time we’ll have, the parties the private rooms, ugh I can’t wait

Chapter 37
“So are you here with your girlfriend?” I asked the stranger who later introduced himself as Jackson. We were dancing along with a couple of other people who had given up on drinking and kissing. “Nope. I’m single actually and by the looks of it so are you.” His hands were on my waist and he was so close that we stood with our noses almost touching. I could tell that he had deep blue eyes and that his dark lashes were long in the dim light. I laughed at his words. “How would you know I’m single and not just cheating on my boyfriend with a rather handsome dance partner? It’s not like it is written on my forehead that I’m single and searching.” He laughed too, a deep rumbling sound that made my hands on his shoulders vibrate. “You don’t look like the kind to cheat besides if you had a boyfriend I would be on my face in my pool of blood in some dark corner here.” I chuckled. He was quite funny and very easy to talk to. Since Charlie left for food for us and I started talking with Ja

“What is it?” I asked her. She walked past me to the fridge that was inbuilt with the wall. Really Maximilian Edwin has a lot of money if he can afford inbuilt fridges in every senior's room, install washing machines, heaters, air conditioning units, induction cookers, all those good stuff inside each senior’s room. It must be good to be rich. I suppose that’s why Tyler can act anyhow he wants because daddy will always be there to supply him with loads and loads of money. Annabel pulled out a bottle of cold water, popped the cover and took a long gulp. “Martin and I are having a baby.” It felt like a heavy weight just dropped in my ear. Maybe I didn’t actually hear what I thought I did because Annabel was acting all normal gulping her water, slicing a piece of cake I had not even noticed was there before. “You and Martin?” “Yeah don’t sound so surprised that he is taking responsibility for his baby. Martin is very responsible, that’s the only

“Kiss. Kiss. Kiss. Kiss.” Johanna and another girl from St. Patrick’s both knelt at the center of the circle awkwardly trying to get closer to kiss. Some idiot had decided that the rule of the game was that the two people on whom the top and bottom of the bottle landed would have to kiss for 2 minutes and Charlie gladly offered to be the timekeeper. Jackson had produced a phone from his bag which he had earlier kept in Annabel’s room and gave it to her. Johanna and the other girl kissed and Charlie started the countdown. The noise we made as we joined Charlie in counting down drowned the noise of the party going on out. The bottle of whiskey was passed around as were cans and cans of beer. “Three, two, one!” They sprang apart. “Whoo!!” “Okay okay next. It’s my turn to spin,” Charlie declared. She got on her knees and spun the bottle. I held my breath and waited for the bottle to stop spinning. The top of the bottle landed on Charlie and the other on Martin. “What the heck?!” Ann
