MELIA POV
I’m glad I'm not the first one to speak.
Even if I knew it was what my sisters were expecting of me.
My head was spinning and my brain was running wild with unanswered questions, but when I finally opened my mouth to speak, nothing came out.
Biologically, Lily and Vera aren't my sisters, but in all other respects, they were as much my sisters as Maisie, Margot, and Kira. Even though all this information was hard to wrap my head around, I'm glad mom decided to share it with all of us because I really need my sisters right now.
Vera was the first of us to speak up and it was like she was reading my thoughts.
Vera looked down at her hands and when she lifted her head back up to look at us, she had a grin on her face.
“From birth, I was raised as your girl's sister, it was like our moms were sister wives from the very beginning. I don’t think we have ever spent more than a day apart from one another.”
“I know Aunt Athena isn’t my mother, but after my mom and Aunt Rosalie died, she took me in without any hesitation. It was like I was always meant to become her daughter and I don’t think she has ever treated me as anything less.”
“The reason I’m saying all of this is because, even though, I can't imagine what you guys are going through with all of this being dropped into your laps. What I do know is that we have made it through way worse. For goddess shakes, we fended off vampires at twelve. As long as we have each other, we will make it through anything. So scream, cry or punch something, but don’t you dare shut any of us out because we love each other and we will never be alone. Through thick and thin, through blood and smoke, we might bend, but we will never break because firefly sisters will always prevail.”
With the mention of the firefly sisters, we all started to giggle, releasing the tension that had built up in the room.
The firefly sisters were what Aunt Rosalie and Aunt Kiada used to call us when we lived with them. I don’t think any of us have heard it said out loud in over six years.
“I don’t know about you guys but I’m terrified, I don’t know how to be a wolf and I honestly don’t know if I even want to be,” Maisie spoke up.
I wanted to reach out to my sister, but I know if I did she could read everything swirling around in my brain with just a single touch, and to be honest, I was excited about becoming a wolf, but I doubt that's something she wanted to hear right now.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m also terrified, but I’ve always dreamed of becoming a wolf, for as long as I could remember.
Alpha August, would never be my father and, honestly, he didn’t seem that pleasant to be around, but as long as I had my sisters, I was sure we would learn to get along.
“Wait for a second, mom, said child . . “ I whispered.
“And? What are you getting at?” Margot questioned me with a confused look on her face.
“He doesn’t know there are three of us, does he?” Maisie smiled.
“Why are you smiling, Mace? I don’t want to do this alone. Do you?” I snapped at her.
“I don’t want to do this at all!” Maisie pushed past me.
We all started talking at once and I could no longer understand what anyone was saying.
The voice in my head spoke.
“We can do this, you know! You have me now and I will always protect you. You don’t have to be afraid to stand out and do things on your own.”
“Ember?”
“Yes, Melia! You will never be alone, I will always be here.”
“I’m scared”
“Scared of what? Me? There is no need to be scared.”
“Can you tell me how this all works, will I get to see you?”
“I know you have a million questions, Melia, and I don’t want you to get overwhelmed and pass out again. That was very dangerous because it left us defenseless. So I need you to breathe and trust me. All your questions will be answered exactly when you need them to be.”
“But for your first two questions the answer is yes, I will walk you through every step along the way and when you are ready we will shift into our wolf form and you will be able to see how beautiful we are.”
Before I could ask any more questions, Maisie grabbed hold of my arm and startled me.
“What are you doing?” I spat at her as I pulled my arm out of her grasp.
“You’re talking to her aren’t you, what is she saying?” Maisie looked at me with hurt in her eyes.
“Maisie, what did mom say about reading our minds without our permission?” I pushed her to the floor.
“I’m allowed to do it in emergencies!!! Maisie sneered up at me.
“This isn’t an emergency, Maisie!”
“Knock it off, you two! Why are you acting like everything is such a secret, Mia? We are all scared and we are looking for answers.” Margot cut our arguing off.
“I’m not acting like anything Mags, I was trying to listen to what Ember was saying, that’s all. How can I tell anyone anything if Maisie rudely interrupts our conversation before I’m even able to ask her any questions?”
“Her name is Ember? Why is her name different from yours?” Lily asked excitedly, bouncing up and down on her toes.
I giggled, letting go of some of my earlier frustrations.
“I’m honestly not sure, but technically she is a different person. She is just sharing my body, like an alter ego.” I tried to explain.
“So we're superheroes now?” Margot replied dryly.
“Not us, but our wolves. Transforming would be like putting on a mask and cape!”
“Transforming!” “What do you mean by transforming?” Maisie cried out, clearly distraught.
“Calm down Mace, Ember said we would transform into our wolves so we, are able to see how beautiful we are, but she didn’t say when.”
Clearly, what I had said didn’t calm my sister down because now she was having a full-blown panic attack.
“Breathe Mace, breathe. Everything is going to be fine.” Lily was rubbing her back trying to calm her down.
“I don’t want to turn into a dog!” Maisie breathlessly gasped between struggling breaths.
“Don’t call her a dog!” I shouted back at Maisie defensively.
“I think Maisie should go lie down, clearly she isn’t taking any of this very well.” Vera reasons.
Lily nodded her head in agreement and guided Maisie up the coven stairs to her bedroom.
“What else has she said, Mia?” Margot's eyes landed back on me as soon as Maisie was out of earshot.
“Nothing, she was being super vague. She said that she knew I had questions but they would all be answered at the right time and that I shouldn’t be afraid because she would be with me every step of the way. “
“Well, isn’t that all just frogs, snails, and puppy dog tails?” Margot rolled her eyes sarcastically.
“What do you want from me, Mags? You should be asking mom all of these questions. Instead of being butt-hurt at me! I didn’t sleep with the damn Alpha, she did!” I screamed just as our mother walked back into the theater room.
“MELIA!" Margot had shock written all over her face.
“What!!! It’s the goddess forsaking truth!” I yelled back at Margot as I ran past our mom.
“Melia honey, wait!” Mom called after me.
I was just too upset to deal with my punishment right now, I needed to figure this all out on my own.
Before I realized it, I was outside the coven boundaries running towards the hidden cave behind the waterfall.
“You have to calm down, Melia.”
Ember struggled to say as I pushed her further back into my mind.
“If you pass out again, I can’t protect you and you're no longer on your land, so no one will even know where we ran off to.”
“Please, Melia.”
“Just leave me alone!” I screamed out loud.
That was the last thing I remembered before I passed out.
ATHENA POV“Baine, where could she have run off to?”“We will find her, honey. All of the warriors are out looking for her now.”“It’s been five hours since she left the coven house. The rogue activity has been at an all-time high for the last couple of months, they could kill her!”“Athena!” My husband grabbed my shoulders, holding me in place.“That is very far from the truth and you know it! Our girls may be young but they are fighters, they have trained their whole lives to protect themselves.”“Don’t you dare snap at me!” I pushed myself out of my husband’s grip.“My child is missing and the only thing you have to say is that she can take care of herself!”“I’m sorry to tell you buddy boy, but training to fight and fighting are two completely separate things!”Baine rubbed his face and took a deep breath before he spoke.“Yes, honey, I know and I’m sorry, but I’m just as scared for her as you but worrying to death isn’t helping either one of us.”I knew he was right, but I would n
MELIA POVI opened my mindlink."Roxy, can you hear me?""Melia, where are you?""Rox, I'm at the corner of the territory next to the standing stones. Will you please come and get me? I'm beat!""I'm on my way."I closed my mindlink as I waited for Roxy to come and save my ass."Mia."Without any questions, Roxy pulled my arm around her neck and helped me to her cottage. "Lightning or Thunder?" Roxy questioned."Lightening"Roxy smirked but said nothing."Lay down for a little bit and I'll get Abuela's broom."I couldn't help but chuckle."Shut it, you know it helps." Roxy raised her eyebrows at me as she walked back into the room with her Nana’s old handmade broom.Roxy started shuffling around the room, sweeping forcefully. As she kicked up a mass amount of energy in my direction, it shimmered and sparkled in the setting sun's light that was shining through the window.I couldn't help but belly laugh at her as all the energy literally swept her up off her feet."Alright, alright, t
MELIA POVSpending a night with Roxy cleared my head. I had to go home to face my mother at some point or she would hunt me down and drag me home. But what exactly was I to say to her?I couldn’t believe she would hide something like that from us.I get what she did was forbidden, but to bind our wolves so that she could keep us in the dark just pissed me off.She was the one that chose to do things that she knew were wrong and I could even forgive her for that, but to wait until we were eighteen then and say "Oh, yeah, by the way, you're a werewolf and you have to be Luna to some strange man's pack" that was supposedly our biological father was just so messed up on a dozen different levels.I could always run away or refuse to do any of what they are asking.I wasn't exactly sure what the consequences of that would be, but I am now an adult and I refuse to let anyone make any more decisions for me!I sighed and let out a breath I hadn't even realized I was holding. On the other hand,
MELIA POVI couldn't breathe, something was clawing at my neck and face.I sat straight up in bed, feeling for any claw marks on my neck. What a terrifying dream I had been having. I hated feeling like I couldn't breathe like I was being suffocated or drowned."Please moon goddess don't let me go out that way!"I let out a yawn and stretched before I threw my covers off and got to my feet. I looked down at myself. Why was I wearing day clothes? Where were my pj's?I looked around my room and nothing seemed to be out of place, so I decided to get ready for the day.As I walked towards my bathroom, I walked past my window and I didn't see any light trying to escape from underneath my curtains. Wait a second, was it dark outside?I started to panic.Something was wrong.I turned on my heels, moving towards my bedroom door. I had to find my mom.The door was locked. What in the hell was going on here? I was really starting to freak out, pounding on my door."Hello, what the hell is go
ATHENA POV "High Priestess." Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I opened my mindlink. "Good Morning Marty!" "Good Morning Ma'am. I'm sorry to disturb you so early but Alpha August is at the front gate requesting to speak to you." "Thank you Marty, I'll be right there." I closed off my mindlink. If August wasn't the biggest pain in my ass! I shimmered to the front gate. "WHAT?" "Good morning to you too, Athena." "Kiss my ass August! It's way too early for your bullshit." "Don't tempt me." August cut his eyes at me. If I wasn't so irritated with him I'd have blushed. "I guess you might as well come in since you insist on being such a nuisance." August belly laughed as he strolled through the front gate, then smiled that bread-winning smile directly at me. He had always looked just like a movie star. Perfect complexion, perfect white teeth, silver-green eyes, high cheekbones, square jaw, and a whole head full of thick silver hair that he has had since birth, I've been told.
MELIA POVHow could I have burnt my mom, was I really that angry with her? Yes, I was upset with her, but I would never hurt her intentionally, would I? I had tried all night to remember what happened but it was all still blank. I remember getting upset, I remember trying to put out my flames on dad's couch and even seeing mom and Nana appear next to me but then nothing. Why couldn't I remember anything? I remember an itchy, burning sensation all over my body, but then everything got really cool like I walked into the coven house's walk-in freezer. And what about Dean? I stood him up on our very first date and I didn't even mean to. If he liked me even a little he definitely doesn't now. I'll never be able to show my face at training again.I buried my head into my pillow and screamed. "Girls, I need you to meet me in the garden for breakfast in 10 minutes"My mom's voice was speaking like a megaphone in my already aching head.I opened my mindlink."Mom, is there any way I could p
MELIA POV "Melia honey wake up. Why are you asleep in the middle of the afternoon?" Nana shook my shoulder, trying her best to wake me. "Sorry Nana, I shimmered today and it wiped me out." I yawned and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. "My brilliant girl, I knew you could do it!" Nana chirped happily as she pulled me into a hug. "Okay Tootsie, what else do you need on your charm bracelet?" Nana questioned as she released me from her grasp. "I'm not sure, but I don't know if I'll be coming back. So I would like to be prepared for anything if at all possible. Will you help me?" "Of course! Okay, so what are your favorite weapons? Do you have a camera? You will need your crystals and my broom. Grab a couple more potion bottles for easy access. Okay, I can't think of anything else, but I have a very special set of charms just for you. They're one of a kind, so don't you dare lose them!" Nana warned. "Put everything on your bed and stand back." *** After all my new additions we
MELIA POV "So it's true all three of you are leaving?" Vera was the first to blurt out once Nana was gone. "Unwillingly", Maisie whined. "Yes, two of us will get the chance to return in a year's time and the third won't return to live here but will always be a part of the coven, so she will be free to come and go as she pleases between the pack and coven." I tried to explain as I was shooting a stern look at Maisie. Kira, Lily, and Vera shuffled their feet in place but didn't look up to meet my eyes. "It's going to be alright, you three have each other and once we are settled in I will ask the Alpha if you guys can come for a weekend visit." I tried to cheer them up. "It's the first time we will be split up." Lily finally met my eyes. I sighed in defeat because I knew there was nothing I could say or do to make Lily's words untrue. We have been raised together since the day we were born. I can't remember a time in the last eighteen years that we have been separated for more tha
