Prologue

Elena Verlice

“Elena Verlice, you are under arrest for aiding and possibly abetting the escape of an inmate. All you say now may or may not be used against you in the court of law so, you have the right to remain silent.” The voice of the fat policeman that looked like he had lived his whole life on donuts resounded in my office as he cuffed me.

Oh my God! What the hell is going on? Why am I being accused of helping her escape? Wait…. He escaped?

Tears started to well in my eyes.

“How could he betray me this way? I had risked everything for him and this is all I get? I really hoped that he wasn't going to do it. I guess I was only a stepping stone in his elaborate plan. I guess I was the only one who fell, both in love and in life. I thought he…...” I trailed off in thought tears began to pour from my face for the first time in forever.

I disassociated myself from the world as I was being led to the police vehicle. A lot of eyes peered from the windows of firms and houses around the street. I saw as they began to murmur incessantly as they tried to indiscreetly point at me.

I could already imagine what they would say.

“What the hell? Isn’t that the legendary Elena Verlice? Why is she being arrested? What crimes did she commit? Did she go too crazy on one of her patients and they killed themselves? What exactly is her crime? Should we go closer to find out? I really want to know what brought about the fall of…..” Would be all the questions that they were murmuring to themselves.

Even in this situation, I could read their faces, I could see through their facades of pity. Deep down, none of them had been happier that I was in this state.

Broken and Betrayed.

As the door of the police vehicle was being opened, I couldn’t help but look back at the building I had just been brought out of. I trained my eyes on the particular window of the building.

My mind was already replaying the memories of all that went down in that office.

The hate, the love, the confessions, the comforting and the passion. All of it played like flashes of movies in my mind.

I guess my crazy was truly not enough for you.

Tears fell from my eyes as I turned my back to it all.

To love and pain.

To the trust and betrayal.

To the truth and the lies.

As I got into the vehicle and the door was closed behind me, I couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened if………

Would it still be the same if…..

Would I still be the same if…..

I looked up and my empty heart became filled with hatred as I stared into those sky blue eyes that were watching this whole scene unfold from the corner. He stood there with fake tears in her eyes as they drove me away.

Would I still have it all, if I hadn’t met him.

If I hadn’t met Ciro Russo.

***********************

I felt my body shiver in fear as I waited calmly inside the dark interrogation room. The coldness of the room brought more chills to my body as my mind unconsciously said a few prayers I wasn't even aware I knew before.

How did I get into this mess? I keep asking myself everytime I remember the situation I'm in.

My head turned to the loud sound of the door opening hitting my ear. I felt my heart skip a bit and another wave of cold swept across my body.

I slowly watched the Lawyer and another man walk into the room with several files in their hands.

"Good day Miss Verlice. Mr Laurence here would like to have a few words with you." The lawyer who I knew before sounded like a complete stranger meeting me for the first time.

They both sat down and Mr Laurence opened a file in front of me and I heard myself gasps loudly.

"Miss Verlice, we have a lot of evidence which could show us you can come out as an accomplice in the escape of Mr Ciro Russo." Mr Laurence stated.

"But due to your previous reputation, we are forced to believe you might be innocent but this evidence is still not present and there is nothing that can be done. This evidence is threatening to cause the loss of your license so we need your complete cooperation to get Mr Russo back." He said again but all I could think about was my license being seized.

Where the hell am I going to start from if that happens? What was I going to do?

I should have listened when everyone told me to back out from Ciro Russo.

I should have known it was a dangerous risk.

You might be confused about this whole issue, so let me rewind it all to the day it all started

The day I met him!

Ciro Russo!!
