4: Pick a room

~*Maxine*~

“Hey! Is this seat taken?”

I didn't want to act like a bitch, not to someone who was being overly bubbly and friendly. The cheer in her voice slightly agitated me... Her huge smile did too. I just couldn't make up my mind on which of the two annoyed me the most. Maybe if I ignore her long enough though, she'll vanish?

“You're still here,” I looked up at her. She was supposed to seem offended, I expected her to look offended, but her smile just only grew.. which should technically not even be possible.

“I love your hair,” she commented, “Was it always like that? Or is it like highlights or ___”

“Can you like, I don't know, take an hour break from talking? I'm trying to enjoy my music before we get to that cursed 'misery' camp,”

“It's actually 'miseri'___”

“Not the point here 'dimples'”

She giggled like a kid... Like me calling her 'dimples' was the funniest thing she's ever heard. It was slightly worrying that this jolly-dimpled-weirdo found humor in all the insults I tried throwing her way. It made it really hard to get rid of her.

“Anyone ever told you that you're funny?” she took that as an invitation to sit down beside me, which is a bummer cause I was hoping to sit alone to the ride there.

I was tempted to give a snarky remark, but she might find humor in that as well so I opted not to... I let it pass by like a rhetorical question.

“I'm Luna by the way,” she extended her hands towards me.

“And I'm not interested,” I ignored it. Surely that should be enough for the girl to get the memo... Should!

She laughed again.

“I think you and I are gonna get along just fine 'Not Interested'” she quoted.

I genuinely made an effort not to roll my eyes, but it was near impossible, especially when I'm going to be dealing with 'this' the entire bus ride to Miseri Camp. This was going to be an extremely long ride.

*************

I can't believe I was actually here. I had to stand in front of the huge ugly welcome sign to actually believe it. I really was in this cursed camp... For a good twenty two days! Two counselors stood at the gate ushering everyone inside. And as far as I was concerned, I seemed to be the only person in this camp who didn't want to be here. People excitedly chatted in pairs or groups as they headed towards the camp fire set up.

“Hola Miserian Campers!” another cheerful counselor was addressing people at the camp fire. Blonde hair, cleanly shaven, blue eyes that could be seen from where I was standing... Half the girls in this place we're already drooling over him. Add the fact that he has a somewhat Mexican accent, they just couldn't help themselves. Some even 'ooing' an 'hola' back as they giggled, “The name's Chris, I'll be your senior counselor this summer. This is Alexa,” he introduced the girl next to him, “She's my partner in crime,” he playfully nudged her shoulder, a gesture that seemed to irritate the girls who were falling for the guy.

If I cared, I'd say the two were a thing... But I don't. So whatever was happening, the jealousy and tension in the air, was in no way any of my business. I'm even surprised by myself. I can't believe I've listened this attentively. It's something I don't normally do.

“Now I know the last thing we all need is to sit two hours listening to me preach the do's and dont's of Miseri Camp...” Chris chuckled a bit, and everyone agreed. I agreed, but I only did it mentally. No sound actually came out of my mouth. Luna shouted in agreement next to me, and I was actually shocked that she's spent an entire ten minutes quiet... Or maybe she was talking and I just didn't care enough to pay any attention. Who can tell for sure? “... So we'll make it as brief as I can,”

“Welcome to Miseri Camp campers...”
