-Cain-I would have loved just fucking Willow until morning came, but I wanted to go back to the privacy of our own home. I wanted to have her completely spread out, naked, sweaty, and panting, without fearing anyone might see her in that wonderful state. There was a time I didn’t care about fucking in front of an audience, but I would have to kill whoever got to see Willow in such a vulnerable state. That was only for me. Yet before we could leave, Willow wanted to go clean up, so I wanted to be on top of the staircase for her to find me. A few mates were still chasing each other or walked past me with smiles on their lips, going home. I hadn’t thought I would enjoy tonight, but I was completely wrong. I had loved every moment of it. Why had I never taken the time to appreciate the tranquility of it? It seemed there were many new experiences for me in store.“Prince Cain,” someone called out, and I turned my head, seeing Willow’s father coming up the stairs, another council member be
-Cain- “You have gone too far!” my father yelled, throwing the glass in his hand across the room and hitting the wall behind me. I was still trying to recover from last night. My head felt double the size and was throbbing. I could barely focus on my father’s anger, and I knew I just had to sit it through, waiting for it all to be over, so I could go back to my room and sleep it off. I couldn’t even remember what I had drunk or taken or how many I had bedded. All I knew was that the light was so sharp in my eyes that I had to wear sunglasses, and my father’s voice was making my ears ring. I couldn’t even hear what he was saying. I was leaning to the side, resting my head in my hand, and half-asleep as he kept yelling at me. My brother, for some reason, looked fine, yet the way he wasn’t quite able to look at me made me think he understood how serious this was better than me. But maybe he could hear our father’s voice. It was just so loud that my ears refused to turn it into an underst
-Willow-After Cain came back, I got him something to eat. We stepped out of the shower, and I brought him food before I told him to rest. Yet the next morning, I couldn’t wake him. He was completely exhausted, and I stood in the doorway, holding a cup of hot tea, as I watched him. He wasn’t sleeping soundly. He was mumbling in his sleep and twitching a little, but I couldn’t wake him from whatever was haunting him in his dreams. His body refused to rest, and so I simply stood there, not sure what to do.“Luna?” I turned around, seeing Henry coming up beside me. He looked into the room, watching Cain as well.“I heard he had come back. How is he?” he asked.“Not good,” I admitted, and I sipped my tea.“Can we do something?”I shook my head. “I don’t think so. I can’t wake him right now, which tells me his body is completely worn out. Henry, he didn’t even know how long he had been gone.”Henry’s eyes grew big as I confessed to him what Cain had told me last night.“He didn’t know he h
-Willow- “Carter?” I called as I knocked on Carter’s bedroom door. I had asked the servants where he might be, and their best suggestion was his bedroom. Yet as I knocked, there was no response, and when I tried listening to hear if he might be in there, I couldn’t hear a single sound. “Carter?” I knocked again, but there was no response. I sighed, taking a few steps back and then placing my hands on my hips, unsure what to do next. If he wasn’t in his room, then where was he? I walked away from his bedroom and began searching the palace for clues. I found some empty glasses of scotch around, and I knew Carter had been there, but those were the only clues I found as I searched. Did he live off of anything else? I did take notice that it was his father’s favorite drink, so he was clearly trying to connect with his father too, but he needed proper sustenance if he was to rule as temporary king until the council could make a decision. Cain hadn’t been trained for the throne in the way
-Cain-The door swung open, creaking the whole way like a warning, but I could barely believe my eyes. I didn’t even notice the scent of death and blood like the rest of my team. The sight I was met with was simply too horrible and so shocking, I couldn’t focus on anything else. I stepped over the doorstep, holding my gun in my hand, but I knew the rogues were long gone. They had sent out the message they wanted to send, tearing apart the protected lone wolves we had placed here until we found them a proper and safe home. “Now we know why they didn’t meet their weekly check-in,” Seth whispered behind me as we walked through the little wooden house, blood now covering the walls and parts of bodies scattered around.“Yeah, the fighters are dead too,” I mumbled, stepping over a leg belonging to one of those fighters as we made our way through the house. As I was about to reach the kitchen, I stepped on something soft. I lifted my foot and looked down, seeing a teddy bear covered in bloo
-Willow- Cain’s words cut me even deeper, but he was also my mate. Both sons were now calling out for their father, saying they needed him. It broke my heart, and I wished I could do more for both of them, but I couldn’t bring back the dead. No one could, and so there was nothing else for me to do but just lie there and hope Cain was comforted by my touch. He seemed to be as his tears stopped and his body grew lax on top of mine. Slowly, he drifted back to sleep, and this time he rested much better. He wasn’t haunted by nightmares, or maybe it was memories? At least he was sleeping. “How do I help you?” I whispered as I ran my fingers through his hair, but I knew he didn’t hear me. Maybe we can get naked? my wolf suggested. “That’s not funny.” I wasn’t trying to be. “Could you come up with a better idea?” It was what you needed when you were sad. “I was angry and felt betrayed by Carter. This is entirely different. So come up with a better idea,” I demanded. This is my best id
-Willow-Cain was typing away so fast and hard on his keyboard that it was filling the office with noise. His tense energy was filling the room, so it was hard to breathe, but both Henry and I were nervous about interrupting him. It was clear that he was very focused on the assignment in front of him. I glanced at Henry, who shrugged, clearly not going to be the one to interrupt his alpha and his work. Cain had been in the office since last night, and I knew he hadn’t slept for one moment. I knew how important it was for him to protect the wolves out there, but I was unsure if he was in the right mind to do that right now. The harsh typing told me he wasn’t.“Cain?” I called, trying to get him to slow down a little, but he didn’t react. “Cain?”“Not now, Willow.” He shut me down, and I sighed.“We should talk about the next trial.” I tried coming up with a good reason for him to slow down, but he shot me another look that said ‘not now’ before he went back to typing.“It’s important t
-Willow- “How is he doing?” Eva asked me as she sat across from across me. We hadn’t spoken in a while for more than one reason. She knew I knew she had told Cain about the powder, and I had been mad, but after everything, it felt so small compared to what we were now dealing with. So I had called her, and she had come over. Though I knew she didn’t care much about Cain, I knew she was very worried about me if she had gone to him with her concerns, and for her to ask how he was meant a lot. “Not good,” I admitted. “I catch him up at night just staring out the window.” “Weren’t you going to see Carter?” “We were. Cain wants to get more wolves out there to help, and we have already sent some fighters ourselves, but he knows his brother isn’t doing very well, and I think he wants to pick the right moment.” “Which is when? If Cain is walking around like a zombie, I’m guessing Carter is too."Eva asked. “Yeah, he isn’t doing very well either. I almost feel more bad for him,” I admitt
