It didn’t take long for the numbness to settle in. Looking around at the enormous room carefully decorated with the smiling faces of friends and family, it was clear they were from two different worlds. Zira wiped her eyes with the back of her hand for what felt like the hundredth time. This time her face stayed dry.

There was no use in shedding any more tears. She pushed the blankets off herself and looked around the room until she found her shoes. It didn’t take too long. They were the only pair lying on the floor. Kady’s mountain of shoes was neatly organized in her walk-in closet. Zira moved to the bedroom door paying extra attention to how she rolled her feet across the ground so they didn’t make a sound.

It was hard to ignore the fact that this was the second time this week that she had to sneak out of someone’s house. It’s not like they were going to stop her from leaving. She just didn’t want to have to answer any questions. Especially since she was certain they were all lyin
