Olivia quickly pulled out her gun, turning to face the intruder. But, there was no one there. Olivia was met with an empty space but only the slight fragrance in the air indicated that someone was previously there. Had she imagined it? No way.
That couldn’t be possible. She’d heard those words loud and clear, each syllable enunciated for her benefit. Then, why couldn’t she see anyone?Olivia turned, pointing her gun around in case the intruder wanted to play silly games. She’d show him she wasn’t one to mess around with. Suddenly, there was a movement to her left–it was so fast that Olivia could have easily excused it for something else–perhaps, the wind–but she was a trained cop. She knew better.“Who’s there? Come out.” She had a finger on the trigger, one eye partly closed. She assumed the action stance, ready to open fire. Someone creeped out from a dark corner behind one of the saggy couches in her sitting room, and Olivia pushed her chest forward, levelling the gun.“Don’t shoot,” he said, raising his hands above his head slowly. Olivia couldn’t see his face in the darkness, but she could recognise the voice from before–smooth and rich like fine silk–and chills ran down her spine. “I’m unarmed.”Olivia shook her head, suddenly overwhelmed by a whirlwind of emotions. How had he entered her apartment in the first place? What did he want? And most importantly, who was he? He couldn’t be saying the truth about being unarmed, could he? As if reading her mind, he spoke up, “I’m Edward. Please, lower the gun.” He gestured with one hand lowered almost to the ground.“Hey, stay right there,” Olivia warned, her voice shaking slightly. The figure halted mid-air. Olivia couldn’t help but be scared. What if this was one of the people Jake had warned her not to mess with? Were they going to kill her too? No. Not possible. Olivia shook her head, refusing to believe it. “What are you doing here and what do you want?” She asked, cocking the gun at his shadowed figure. “Speak now or I'll shoot!”“Lower the gun, first. And we can talk.” Olivia was surprised at the sudden switch in tone of voice. It was now pliant and soft, like a baby’s. Was he trying to trick her? He could be playing on her intelligence for all she knew. She cocked the gun at him, steadying herself on her feet. A tense silence ensued, followed by the wild thumping of her heart. Nobody moved.“I’m sorry, but you leave me no choice.” Before Olivia could realise what that statement implied, she felt a whoosh of air brush past her and when she stared down, she saw that her gun was gone, her hands poised as if clutching the dry air. Oh God! What was going to happen now?Olivia’s whole body trembled from nerve-wracking fear and her knees immediately went weak at the morbid thought of him having his way with her. If there was one thing–an injustice–she couldn’t stand, it was rape.“Tell me what you want.” Her voice was unsteady, sweat dripping down her face and the line of her neck, settling between her cleavage. The area around her armpit was soaked with sweat. She was at the mercy of this man, whoever he was. When Olivia raised her head, her eyes widened with shock to see he was back at his initial position. How had he done that? And so quickly like the speed of light travelling through a wide spectrum.Olivia couldn’t believe it. One minute, she was the one with the gun–her star power–and the next, it was gone and she was left feeling so empty and exposed. She hated this powerless feeling, but it was threatening to overcome her.“I just want to talk.”Talk? Then, she recalled the word that had been circled severally on the white sheet of paper. Superhuman strength. Could it be? Olivia blinked, trying to understand if it could be true. These things didn’t just happen. There was the law of gravity and it couldn’t be easily broken with the snap of a finger.“Please,” Olivia begged, staggering back. Her heart hammered against her rib cage, restricting the flow of air into her lungs. “Don’t kill me.” She used her hands as a shield to protect her face from harm.“I wasn’t planning on doing that.” Olivia heard something drop to the floor with a slight clang, the sound slicing through the cut-throat tension in the room, and then, there was a kick. He was tossing the gun aside. He wouldn’t do that if he truly wanted to harm her, would he? How could she be sure to trust him? “I’m not going to hurt you,” he said again, in that calm, gentle voice that she didn’t want to hear anymore because it gave her body the shivers.“Okay, so what do you want then?” She swallowed suddenly wishing she could have a glass of water. But, no chance, staying that long with an intruder in her home. The man stepped forward and Olivia took a step back, nearly stumbling. He paused, as if sensing her fear.“I’m here instead to help. You should remain calm.” Calm? Olivia had to give it to him. The man had some nerves talking to her like she was a cheap slut he’d picked by the side of the road. How could she remain calm when he broke into her house? How could she remain calm when he took her gun from her??“What are you? What are you doing in my apartment?" She asked again. "And—And how did you do that?"“Olivia, do you believe in the supernatural?” Her eyes widened with shock. Olivia? How in the world did he know her name? Was he a spy for an undercover intelligence agency? She was going crazy thinking about it.“How on earth do you know my name? Why don’t you answer any of my questions, huh?”“You’re getting antsy,” he cut in. “Stay calm. I’m going to explain everything. You see, I’ve been watching you for a while. I want to protect you, but you’re not making it easy for me.”What did he mean by that? Why was he talking about protecting her? A thousand questions were flitting into her mind at once. He’d lost her in the first sentence. Watching her? Really? “And what’s it to you?” She challenged, mildly taken aback by the defiant spirit springing up in her. She had no idea where it was from, but she loved it. She hadn’t lost all control like she’d initially thought.“Your safety is very important to me. You're quite tough but stubborn. It gets you in really dangerous situations. You know, you should listen to your partner for once and keep your nose out of your parents' case.” Now, that last bit knocked the socks off her feet. How did he know about her parent's case? Was Jake working with him? Or did Jake send him to frighten her?“How did you know about that? There was only one other person aware of my plans to find my parent’s killer. Are you guys working with him? Did he send you?”Edward chuckled. “You don’t get it. I'm not here on anyone's command.”“Then, explain yourself. How did you find out and why are you here?-” She gestured with her eyes darting about the expanse of the sitting room, “-in my house?”"I know everything about you because I am always with you. I feel what you feel and I have been like your shadow since you turned eighteen.""How's that possible?"“There are many things you don’t know that exist in this world.”“Like you, for example?” Olivia bit back, sarcasm evident in her tone. He was in front of her in seconds and Olivia could smell the minty breath. Who was he? She wondered inwardly. He lifted a finger and gently tucked a strand of her hair behind her eyes. His gaze trailed from her face downward and Olivia felt her breath seize. He was irresistible–never minding the situation. His dark hair was tousled, and Olivia had the strangest urge to run her hands through the strands. She snapped out it and lowered her head in shame, wondering why she was attracted to a man who broke into her home.Edward lifted her chin with his hand and lowered his face to her neck. Olivia trembled as he sniffed her, slowly grazing her neck with his nose. "Do you feel that? That tension?"Olivia nodded before she could stop herself.“That's the mate bond” he announced. "And you're my mate."Mate? Olivia wasn’t sure she’d heard right. And even if she did, what did he mean??“What do you mean?” Her voice was level, but her heart thudded loudly in her chest.“What it means–” He finished his survey, finally settling on her face, “–is that I’m a werewolf. And there are others like me, also with their partners which we call mates in the literal sense. Mine just so happens to be you.”Olivia chuckled. It had to be some silly joke. He wasn’t making much sense, talking some nonsense about werewolves. They only existed in books and not real life.“You need to get out of my apartment before I call the police.” Olivia put some distance between them. She was afraid she’d lose herself to him, pleading with him to touch her in places that she needed to be touched. God! She was insane. But, Edward made no move to go. Olivia stared at him with a puzzled expression on her face, baffled at this man’s audacity. Didn't he hear her? Or, did she have to repeat herself? He took a step forward.
Olivia’s eyes widened slightly at the realisation that he’d kissed her, and when Edward pulled away, she slapped him before she could stop herself. “Why the hell did you do that?” She had managed to accommodate his excuse for breaking into her house but how could he kiss her?Edward stared at her, stunned. The place she’d struck was a little reddened, the shade several colors darker than his pale skin, and he remained quiet. What had gotten into him? Since he was in her apartment, he had tried to control himself. To stop the wolf bond from influencing him but it had been hard.He didn't know Olivia would have this kind of effect on him. He wanted to hold her, kiss her and mark her the instant he took in her scent. But how could he do that when she was easily upset that he kissed her?Olivia could feel the anger and hurt building up in her chest, threatening to explode any minute now. She struggled to rein her emotions in, nails digging into the heel of her palm, drawing blood.“Please
Olivia dialed Jake’s number at once, she could not wait to relate to someone about all that had happened to her.“Something strange happened to me,” she voiced out the moment he picked the call.Jake let out a breath before he spoke up. “Go on.”She immediately explained her experience with Edward to him. She told him everything that transpired between herself and the werewolf, except for the kiss. After detailing the event to him, all Jake could do was laugh.“What’s funny?” She asked in an annoyed tone.“Your story of course. Werewolves only exists in movies, you are just overthinking things.”“You can choose to doubt me all you want but I think there's more to this than just some crazy guy claiming to be a werewolf."Jake raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" he asked.Olivia took a deep breath. "I think this has something to do with my parents' murder," she said. “I did some research and all the clues are leading me to some big werewolf house."Jake shook his head. "Olivia, you n
“I’m sorry but I have other things to attend to,” she answered, not caring to see the hurt in his eyes after she had declined his request.“When next do you wish to see me?” He asked her, hoping for a positive reply.“Tonight,” she gave a fast reply and to his shock.“Tonight?” He repeated and in total disbelief.“Was she starting to feel this comfortable with him?”“Only on one condition,” she added, making him curious.“And what may that condition be?”“You will have to introduce me to the rest of the family,” she answered.“Alright, I will. Be here by 9, I’ll be waiting for you by the entrance,” he said with a bright smile. She nodded with a straight face and walked away just immediately after his reply.Olivia got home, she checked her phone and saw the different calls she had gotten from her colleagues. She thought of revealing all that had happened to them but ended up deciding to handle it all on her own.By six, she prepared herself and left, heading to the pack house. Edward
Olivia felt a chill run down her spine as Edward's voice grew louder and more menacing. She knew that he was angry, and she didn't want Marcus to be caught in the middle of their argument."Marcus, I think it's best if you go now, it’s getting late," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.Marcus looked at her, concern etched on his face. "Are you sure? Don’t you need me to stay?"Olivia shook her head. "No, it's okay. I'll be fine. I just need to have some work to do and I need to be alone for that."“Is that really the problem? You seem very nervous,” Marcus asked.“No, I am fine. No need to worry,” she assured him.Marcus hesitated for a moment, but then he nodded. "Okay. Just be careful, okay?"Olivia smiled. "I will. Thank you."As Marcus left, Olivia turned to face Edward. She could see the anger in his eyes, and she knew that she was in trouble."What do you want?" she asked, trying to keep her voice calm.Edward took a step towards her, his eyes blazing with fury. “Why did
Olivia was jolted awake by the sudden noise that echoed through the house. She sat up in bed, her heart racing as she tried to identify the source of the disturbance. Was it a burglar? A storm? She strained her ears, listening for any other sounds, but the house was silent. She slipped out of bed and tiptoed to the door, peering out into the hallway. Everything seemed normal, but she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. She crept down the hall, her bare feet making no sound on the hardwood floor. As she approached the guest room, she noticed that the door was slightly ajar. She pushed it open and stepped inside, her eyes scanning the room for any signs of danger but the room was empty.Panic began to rise in her chest as she realized that Edward was not inside the room. She called out his name in a hushed voice, hoping that he was nearby and would hear her but there was no response. On the other hand, Edward felt a strange sensation in his mind, as if someone was reachin
Chapter 9“I never agreed to be your mate!” She wanted to scream but all she could do was voice it in her head.“Do not even think of it,” she immediately heard his voice in her head. “Remember we made a deal,” he added. She immediately turned and gave him a deep frown. His mom didn’t fail to notice the tension between them, she widened her eyes in happiness. "Your mate? That's wonderful news! Come, let's sit down and talk."As they sat and chatted, Olivia couldn't help but feel a sense of belonging. She was surrounded by wolves.“So tell me, when do the two of you intend to mate each other?”“We do..”“Soon mother,” Edward immediately replied, cutting Olivia short and pressing onto Olivia’s hand.“Let go of me,” Olivia interrupted, pulling her hand away from Edward's grasp.Edward's mom looked at Olivia with surprise. "Oh, I'm sorry. Edward didn't mention that you hadn't accepted the bond yet." She was quick to understand that she wasn’t comfortable with the discussion."It's fine,"
Chapter 10Olivia knew she had to take her eyes away from his naked and tempting body, she was supposed to be asking him questions about why he had done that but with this naked man in front of her, she couldn't find her tongue. She wanted to say something but she was short of words. "Olivia," he called out her name in a hoarse voice.“Yes,” she answered, finally managing to say something. Edward knew he could not let her ask him any questions, so he decided to do something that would leave her speechless. The action he took next made Olivia nearly lose her breathing, it made her blood hammer and her chest beat faster. He rushed to her and gave her a very tight hug. He knew fully well that he was completely naked and this act of his would seize her breath away. "I'm sorry for letting you see that other scary part of me," he said in a soft fake tone. "I just could not stop myself from having a taste of flesh meat, believe me I sincerely tried very hard to stop myself but I just cou
