Chapter 3

“As long as I’m your boss, you are only going to do suction!” He barked at her with rage evident in his eyes.

She looked at him as tears welled up in her eyes and threatened to spill out. She gritted her teeth but didn’t say anything. Despite her efforts to hold in, tears rained down her cheeks.

There was a moment of silence before he turned from her and focused on the patient in front of him. Taking the scalpel, he made an incision between the 10th and 11th rib.

She was still glaring at him while tears rolled down uncontrollably. She was holding the suction tube in one of her hands while she gave him a disgusted look.

5 days, 12 surgeries, and still suction. Ayra was sick and tired of standing in the surgery room still doing nothing but holding the suction tube.

Today she tried to voice out her opinion and ask if she could assist him in the surgery but he barked at her.

Nobody in the room spoke but just stared at Ayra and Dimitri simultaneously. Dimitri was a calm man when he was performing surgeries but today, everyone noticed how angry he was because of Ayra.

They also noted that Ayra was the only one to do suction despite being here for five days. He would usually let his interns help him with their second surgery itself but that wasn’t the case with Ayra.

She just stood there doing what she was asked to do. The 2-hour surgery went on without anyone uttering a single word, there than what was required.

As soon as one of the other doctors finished the suturing, she took the tube and put it back in its place, and marched out, before Dimitri could dismiss anyone.

Dimitri looked at her retreating back and had a blank expression on his face. He said nothing and just turned his head and continued the little things after the surgery.

As she got out of the room, she went directly to the bin and discarded all of the things she was wearing. She walked to the sink and washed her hands and headed out to the locker room.

She unlocked her locker and took her phone from the bag. She was disappointed, angry, and cranky all at the same time. She slammed the locker shut in frustration.

Without wasting a second, she went to the cafeteria and stood in line to collect her food. The tears that run down her cheeks two hours ago were now dry and had stained her cheeks but she didn’t bother to wipe them away.

She was furious but she knew better as to how to control her feelings, especially anger. Right from the start, she knew anger wasn’t going to be of any good. Over the years Ayra had come to the conclusion that anger can only destroy someone and there is no constructive outcome from it.

She stood in line as tears welled up in her eyes again. No matter how much she tried, she couldn’t forget the way he spoke to her in front of all those people. She felt insulted. She could not fathom the thought that someone or rather her boss insulted her. She didn’t hold pride in any materialistic things like typical girls of her age did, but she held pride in self-respect. She had learned one thing if you don’t respect yourself nobody will and that's what made her the girl she was. And she was shattered when he didn’t just disrespect her once but many times since she started her residency.

As soon as her food was served, she picked up the tray and sat down at the corner by the large glass window where a table was gladly unoccupied.

She took her phone from her pocket and looked at it for any messages. While taking occasional bites of her sandwich. She was busy on her phone and finishing the sandwich when a young lady appeared in front of her. She dropped the half-eaten sandwich on the tray when she heard her call her name.

“Dr. Vittori is looking for you, it looks like he’s angry,” the lady told her. Ayra snapped her head towards her and stared at her in confusion.

“Go! I don’t know what he’ll do if he doesn’t find you,” she said and without wasting her time, she pushed the chair back took her phone and Id which she had placed on the table, and ran out of the cafeteria.

She was up and about on her heels as she didn’t want to give any more reasons for him to be disappointed in her. In the hurry she didn’t even place the tray back nor did she finish the sandwich.

She moved to the elevators and impatiently pressed on the buttons but it was all the way up the seventh floor. She realized that it will take a long time for the elevator to reach down, she decided to run up the stairs. She even skipped a few steps and leaped while holding the handrail.

She ran past all the people and dashed straight into his cabin without even knocking, again.

“I wonder how someone like you can exist in a world like this,” He chuckled. His voice was laced with mockery.

She stood by the door panting hard. When she heard his voice, she immediately snapped her head up and looked at him.

She instantly took a step back looking at his bloodshot eyes. She gulped in fear, wondering what might have angered him so much. His words might have been in a mock tone which was totally in contrast with his expression. She didn’t dare to avert her gaze from his as they held some sort of warning in them.

She watched him stand up from his chair and head towards her in extremely small steps and at a slow pace. As he walked closer, she arched her neck back to meet his eyes as he was very much taller than her. He was seething.

He wrapped his finger around her arm and jerked her. A short yelp escaped her lips but she didn’t do anything more. He pulled her with him towards her table and pointed at the files kept on his table. There were many.

“You look at these files?" he pointed to the set of files on his table again.

“They are my patients.” He paused.

“You were supposed to arrange them accordingly with the right diagnosis and lab reports, but what did you do?” He growled a bit. Ayra thought it was for the best if she didn’t answer but little did she know it would be her mistake.

“Answer! What the fuck did you do?” He bit out and Ayra flinched in his arms and he only increased his grip on her arm at her reaction. He didn’t care if it was hurting her or not. All he cared about were his patients.

He released her and walked up to the table and took a bunch of files with him and pulled the papers out and scattered them all over the floor.

Ayra looked down, confused as to what he was doing. He looked at her confused form before walking back to his table and doing the same with the rest of the files.

Ayra knew why those reports weren’t arranged properly. Dimitri had called her in for immediate surgery and had later dismissed her from work as it was too late. She decide to arrange the file first thing today morning but she had surgery to attend. Little did she know that he would get his hands on these reports before she could even arrange them.

“Now, I think I have made the work easier for you, arrange all of these reports properly. I don’t care how long you have to stay back but I want these done by tonight! Am I clear?” He bit out in a harsh tone.

She just bowed her head down. Tears pricked her eyes but she held them back with great difficulty.

“Am I fucking clear?” He yowled cupping her jaw harshly, forcing her to look into his raging eyes. Ayra winced at his hold on her jaw yet said nothing. She looked at his deep blue eyes and just nodded.

“Words,” he spoke in a calm manner.

“Words, bambolotta (doll),” he said and looked at her. His eyes flicked with a foreign emotion. She was too caught up to read his eyes or understand what he just called her.

“Y-Yes sir,” a sob escaped and he smirked at her reaction.

He removed his hand from her jaw and her face tilted to the side and stumbled back due to the force.

He took his phone, car keys, and apron and walked right out of his cabin without sparing her a single glance.

She looked at the pile of reports in front of her and heaved a shaky sigh. It was going to be a long night as there were nearly thirty or maybe more reports to put together.

Tears rolled down her eyes. She knew this was going to take her hours to arrange it.
