CHAPTER 4

Amber's POV

 “Sir,” I nudged an excessively drunk Caleb. “Sir, please get up, you’re drunk.”

The only response I got was a groan.

I looked around, nobody was paying us attention but with each passing moment, my anxiety grew. I was already exhausted from work, but seeing Caleb passed out like this made me extremely concerned.

What was he thinking about?

I squatted down and tapped his back softly, yet as urgently as I could.

“Caleb,” I whispered frantically while looking at his face.

His face that once upon a time, I could never get tired of staring at.

“Is anything the matter, Amber?”

I spun to see the assistant manager eager for an explanation.

“I don’t know,” I rose and dusted my jeans. I had changed out of my uniform. “He’s passed out.”

The assistant manager studied him and then the two empty bottles of wine. He shook his head with sympathy and tapped on his back. “Sir,” he called. “It’s time to go home, you’re passed out.”

Caleb only stirred and turned his head to the other side.

“What do we do now?” he sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “We can’t leave his passed out like this.”

“I know him,” I blurted out, instantly regretting my words. “I can try to get him home.”

The assistant manager looked like he could hug me. He escorted me outside me entrance of the restaurant and left me to deal with consequences of my big mouth.

I cursed under my breath because why did I have to admit to knowing him and offering to help him home?

I glanced at the drunken man beside me. “Why did you have to drink this much?” I scolded. “What is your problem? Now where do I take you to?”

“Home,” Caleb slurred as he staggered. “I wannagohome.”

I was surprised that he actually responded. I guess the alcohol didn’t fully shut his brain down.

“I’ll take you home, all right,” I said. We’ve gotten to the edge of the road where I was supposed to stop a taxi. “What’s your address, Caleb?”

Nothing.

“Caleb,” I shuck him with urgency. All I needed was his home address. “What’s your home address?”

“Home?”

I nodded several times at once. “Your home here in LA, what’s the address?”

As soon as I got the address, I stopped the next taxi and we got in. His house was located in one of the posh parts of the city, which was expected. But, was I doing the right thing? I only wanted to get him home safe, but what if it was the beginning of my doom?

I shook the disturbing thoughts away. Nothing was going to happen. All I had to do was drop him off at home and walk away. How hard could that be?

Caleb’s house looked like it was ripped off from a magazine. It was mainly neutral colors, at the same time; it had this cold vibes- as if the occupant didn’t reside in it for too long.

While I dragged Caleb to his bedroom, I wondered why he didn’t stay in a hotel instead. Especially if here was here for short visits.

Caleb bedroom had the same vibes as the rest of the house- cold and lonely. But I didn’t care. I had accomplished my mission and it was time for me to go to my own house, or apartment rather.

I let Caleb fall to his bed like a sack of potatoes and I was glad and relieved for the weight lifted off me. He was dangerously close to the edge of the bed so I rolled him to the middle of the bed. I shifted a knee backwards to climb off the bed when I felt a grip on my wrist.

I collided with his chest and felt his wrist curl around my waist, as if it was a normal thing for him. My body felt on fire and my heart began to beat so fast, I thought it might explode within few minutes.

I stared at his face. He looked like a satisfied baby. Even his lips had the slightest smile on it. He used to let his hair grow longer when we were in high school, but now, it was trimmed and styled to fit him perfectly. His eyebrows were still bushy and I remembered how I used to like touching it.

Being so close to him after all those years made me feel turmoil of emotions. I wanted to smile at the memories we created together, yet I felt this ache in my heart because the same man that had promised never to let me go broke his promise.

I found myself tracing his eyebrow with my finger, and I didn’t know why, but I wanted to enjoy that moment. It was probably selfish of me, but I didn’t care.

I needed just five more minutes like this with him before I left.

~~~
I woke up to a pair of electric blue eyes staring at me.
I leaped off the bed in shook at the unexpected sight and tumbled to the floor. As I got up on my feet, my head was spinning with so many questions.
What happened? Where was I?
When bits of my memory finally came together, I slapped a palm on my mouth in disbelief. I had spent the night in Caleb’s place.
“Amber.”
Hurriedly, and not wishing to hear more, I grabbed my tote bag from the side table and bolted to the door.
“You work there.”
I paused and my hands tightened over the door knob. I couldn’t face him, yet, I was curious to hear what he what wanted to say.
 I could hear shuffling. “Why did you do it?”
Because I couldn’t leave you there. I replied automatically in my head.
“Amber,” his voice was getting close.
I pushed through the door and fled to the living room. Everywhere and everything was spinning. It suddenly felt difficult to breathe and I needed air. I needed to leave this place.
“Amber, please wait.”
My body froze, obeying his command, but I screamed in my head. I screamed at my legs to keep on moving, but they didn’t.
“Thank you.”
I turned slowly to him, and my I felt my heart rip. Out of that crack, so many memories I had locked up burst out, latching unto several emotions at once.
“Please, have breakfast with me,” I said nothing as my eyes followed his movement to the refrigerator. He brought out a bowl of ice cream and took out another covered plate. “Chicken,” he said with a small smile. “I’m gonna microwave it. So please have a seat.” He gestured to one of the stools next to the kitchen counter.
I quietly took a seat, feeling the heat of his stare as I did so.
What was I still doing here? I asked no one in particular. My brain kept on sending warning waves to me, but my heart- my heart controlled my body that moment and I stayed.
You have a boyfriend Amber. A voice whispered in my head, causing me to nod. I knew that. I mean, we were just two exes having breakfast together, two exes that have moved on. It’s not like we were going to have sex. Right?
“How long have you been living in LA?”
I take a few seconds to eye the chocolate ice cream and spicy chicken before me. It was a combo we had made together one evening and even made it our signature go-to snack. I had stopped eating it ever since we broke up because it reminded me of him.
“Four years now.” My voice was clipped, but I didn’t care. I also didn’t want him to see me still affected by our breakup so I ate a spoon of ice cream. “I’m getting married soon.”
It was a lie of course. Dave hadn’t yet proposed, but I said it to see if I was going to get any reaction from him.
All I got was a jaw twitch. “When is the wedding?”
The ice cream suddenly tasted like saw dust and the chicken didn’t look as appetizing as before. “Soon.” I avoided his eye and got up. “I have to go now.” I faced the direction of the door.
“After all these years, you’re still a terrible liar.” Caleb grabbed my wrist and the next thing I knew, I was against the kitchen wall, and dangerously close to him.
“Caleb,” my voice came out a mixture of a plea and a moan. Why was I moaning?
Caleb’s hands pinned me against the wall and his lips grazed that delicious spot between my neck and shoulder. “I bet he doesn’t fuck you as good as me.”
I hated that he was right, and I hated the way my core clenched with need, that only him could satisfy. I moaned as his finger trailed down and tugged against my jeans. He clashed his mouth against mine and I melted into bliss as we wrestled with equal hunger and passion.
His fingers found its way into my jeans and pass my panties. “Fuck,” he breathed against my lips. “Your pussy is so wet, Amber.”
I was in cloud nine at that point and my thoughts were mushy as he slid two fingers into my pussy. In and out, like a slow rhythm while still kissing my face, my neck and nibbling my ears.
Caleb increased the pace of his rhythm, and didn’t stop until my body shuddered in climax and waves of bliss spread through me.
My ex boyfriend had made me orgasm by fingering me, while my current boyfriend couldn’t even do that with his dick.
