Chapter Four:- Chosen

Taking a look back on how I've lived my life, I suddenly felt chosen when I heard a voice from behind me " I want to get married to Claire Adamson" The pronunciation of my name in the person's mouth made me smile unknowingly as I turned around to see who it was.

"Mr. Damien, what are you doing here?" My mother immediately shouted when she saw him. My eyes widened when I saw him too. Why was he here? Did he hear all that Veronica said?

---

(FLASHBACK)

Damien left the garden after his father joined the scenery. He hated whenever his father pretended to like him when he was with other people.

What Damien hated the most was pretense. He could see right through people how they felt or thought but the hardest thing he could predict was what his Father and Brother had in mind. He saw this people as monsters and not family.

He vividly remembered how Clyde accidentally killed one of his rivals in class because they fell in love with the same girl. Clyde got away with his evil act because he had powerful people backing him up.

Clyde also sexually harassed one of the housemaids when he was 19 years old. He was reported to the police but he still got away with the crime he committed because his perfect and powerful father was always there for him.

There was nothing Clyde would do that his father, Marvin, would consider as bad.

Damien knew that since he was with Claire at that moment, his father would pretend to care about him and he never wanted that to happen.

Damien walked to his car and was about to drive off when he noticed his phone wasn't with him. He remembered placing it on the dining table during the family breakfast. He immediately got down from his car and went toward the house, where he saw Claire walking in innocently.

He halted in his tracks, watching her as she walked into the house. In his description, she looked just too innocent to be entangled in his cruel world.

She was pure and yet, too fragile. Damien followed her quietly into the house only to meet Veronica yelling about who was going to get married to him.

"She's also facing the same thing as me?"

(END OF FLASHBACK)

" I left my phone on the dining table" He pointed and then, his gaze dropped on me.

"Oh, I'll get it for you," My mother said as she hurriedly went to the dining room to bring his phone.

"Here" She interrupted the intense gaze Damien and I shot at each other.

Damien collected the phone and was about to leave when Veronica stopped him with her words.

"Why are you choosing her over me? I am better than her. I am prettier, smarter and I can speak!" She said with the deep animosity she had towards me.

Yeah, she was right about what she said. Veronica was gorgeous. She had curly blonde hair and beautiful hazel eyes. She had everything a man would want to have in a woman.

She wasn't tiny like I was. She had beautiful long legs and fair skin. She was also smart. She never came last in class and yes, she can speak unlike me.

"I hate girls that brag about what they have," Damien suddenly said without turning back and he left.

I was surprised by his answer and that forced me to take a look at Veronica and what I saw scared me.

I could see death in those eyes and it made me shiver. It wasn't my fault that I was chosen over her for the first time. Perhaps being beautiful isn't the key to having everything anyway.

I walked away leaving her alone with her mother. From my room, I could hear her scream and throw things because of the rejection. I felt happy and calm because, for the first time, I felt that I belonged somewhere.

(McMillan Mansion)

"What was that dramatic fight you pulled out there" Marvin yelled and Clyde after they got home.

Clyde exhaled, clenching his fist.

"Damien caused all of it, Dad. If he wasn't getting on my nerves, none of this would have happened" Clyde replied.

"Can you listen to yourself? You loosed control in front of that little girl now she knows what runs in our family"

"Why are you so worried about that girl? It's not like she can speak"

"She can't speak but she can write. Don't you have sense?"

"Chill Dad. She dropped out of school in third grade and she can't write. Just calm down. Even if she knows what's going on, her family won't believe her because she's useless" Clyde tried defending himself.

"Holy shit!" Marvin sat on the couch, rubbing his head continuously.

"Since she will be living with us, don't let your guard down. Don't do anything stupid" Marvin warned and Clyde nodded.

Why the hell will she stay here? She’s Damien's responsibility and not ours. I can’t babysit a mute!” Clyde strongly disapproved of the idea that he would be living under the same roof with the Adamson’s daughter.

Marvin, out of frustration raised his voice at Clyde, “Do I look like someone who is enjoying this? Does this sound like I need your approval or not?” Marvin asked and Clyde shook his head with a deep frown on his face.

Even if he knew that his father was on his side no matter what, he still hated the fact that he would be living with two enemies under the same roof.

“She’s Damien’s responsibility and I know that. But they both have to stay with us. If I let them go, Damien will have all the freedom he has ever dreamt of and I’m sure you and I don’t want that” Marvin raised his brow, waiting for Clyde to give him an answer even if he already knew what he had in mind.

“Yes Father” Clyde answered in a low voice, satisfying Marvin.

Marvin knew that Clyde would never allow Damien to get the freedom he had always been praying for. Other than the enmity they both shared, Damien was Clyde’s backbone.

Without him, the company would have been bankrupted and they wouldn’t be a match to the Adamson family.

Whatever 'The First Royalty Hotel' was today it was all due to Damien’s hard work.
