Chapter 1

Hannah's POV

It is hard being a fresh graduate of a course that needs strong connections for you to get your dream job. I was just lucky to have parents that will support me in all of my dreams. I am Hannah Martin, and we live on a small island in the Philippines. My parents were both farmers. The island where we are living is quiet and peaceful. It is just sad with the thought that I will temporarily leave this island as part of fulfilling my dreams.

Because in a month or two, I will push my luck and get my dream job in Manila. I have been living with my parents for more than twenty-one years and living without them is a complete stranger to me. I don't know how I would cope with anything, but I knew I should.

It was early morning when I decided to take a walk, so I just pulled out my shorts and plain black shirt from my closet when I felt myself sweating. I went out to do some sightseeing. I looked up when I saw something in the air.

"Holy sht!" I gasped. There's a helicopter and I think it's crashing.

Wait... What the hell?

It crashed on another island. People in the neighborhood went out of their houses when they heard the loud explosion.

"What was that?" My best friend Ashton asked.

"Plane crash..." I answered without looking at him. My eyes were nailed on the exact spot where the crash happened.

"Do you think we should check if there's a survivor?" he asked, and I looked at him in disbelief. His hair is soaking, and only a towel wraps around his waist. I used to see him this way, so I don't find it awkward. He was obviously taking a shower when the explosion happened and did not bother to put his clothes on.

"I don't want to. What if it suddenly explodes again? We're dead, Ash, we're dead!" I said while raising my hands dramatically.

"Calm down, Chloe, I was just suggesting. If you don't want to, then we won't," he said with a chuckle. I just rolled my eyes. The shades from there are now clearly plastered, which means that it crashed ridiculously.

"It's the second helicopter that crashed on that island," Miriam interrupted us from staring at the island.

"Second?" Ash and I both said to his mum.

"Yeah, the first one was 20 years ago. Same time, same place. This one is horrible. But the first one was still worse," Miriam said.

"No one can ever survive that crash," I said while slightly shaking my head.

"Miracle, it had." We looked at Miriam again and she was smiling. We gave her a disbelief look.

"If the first one was worse but still had a survivor, maybe this time...can also have," Ash said, full of hope. Does he care if someone was able to survive? Oh yeah, He's Ashton Singh. My ever kind-hearted best friend. The only one who can see good to someone, even if it's Satan's friend.

"I know what you're thinking," I said, and I slightly shook my head in protest.

"Chloe, we should give it a try. What if there's a survivor who needs help?" he pushes.

"Ash, I saw it before it crashed. And the passengers there probably have the least chance of surviving," I said, but he shook his head.

"If you don't want to go, I'll do it on my own," he said, and I sure as hell that he was serious about it.

"Are you sure, son? Maybe we should wait for another hour, so we can be sure that it won't explode anymore." Miriam seems so worried about her son's heroic act but we both know that we cannot stop him.

"Mum, in this situation, every second is important. I'll just put my clothes on," he said, then turned his back on us to enter their house. When he came back with his clothes on, he started walking away.

If he's my ever kind-hearted best friend, well, I'm his ever supportive best friend. Of course, I ran after him before he could hop in on one of the boats. "Be careful, the two of you," everyone screamed when the boat started to sail.

I looked at him. "This is insane, this is the most heroic yet idiotic thing you will do," I said, and he smiled.

"But you're still here, supporting me."

"Because you're my best friend and I just can't stand there waiting for you to come back," I said and he chuckled.

"This would be a great experience if there's a survivor, Hannah. Then you will be proud of yourself that you're a hero to someone," he said, and he's obviously hopeful that there's a survivor in that helicopter crash.

"What's the use of being a hero to someone when you're taking your own life at risk just to save someone who's still unsure if still breathing. Miriam was right, what if it suddenly exploded the moment we got there? Oh my God, I'm too young to die!" I said hysterically and he burst out in laughter.

"You and your out of this world imaginations really know how to lighten up the mood." Then he laughed again. I swat him on his arm and he mocks me. I couldn't take my glare off him until we just realized that we were already at the shore of the island, and we climbed off the boat.

"There..." Ashton said when he saw the helicopter. We hurriedly run towards it, and we couldn't get nearer because of the heavy smoke coming from its engine. How are we able to check for the passengers there? We cannot completely see what's within.

"Just stay here. I'll go there," Ashton ordered me, but I hold his wrist to stop him.

"No! That's stupid. Stop acting like you are superman!" I said, but he looked so desperate and determined to risk his life.

"Just stay here. Wait for me," he said, but I shook my head.

"No, I'll go with you." I said and he looked confused. Whether to let me join him or not.

"Are you sure?" I just nodded and he sighed in defeat. We headed our way to the busted helicopter. The nearer we come, the more we cough. The smoke in here is no joke.

"Anybody here?" Ash shouted.

No respond.

We took a little more steps until we heard a frantic cough. We're pretty sure that it's from the helicopter. We half ran in separate ways and tried our best to find him...or her.

"Chloe, he's here..." Until I heard Ashton shouting, and I ran to wherever his voice was coming from. He's trying to carry a man. Oh God, his eyes are closed, and I'm hoping that he's still breathing. Ashton carried him away from the helicopter. He started running and all I could do was follow him. "He's alive..." he informed me. He lays him near the shore and the plane starts to go on fire. I gasped.

"Oh my God. If we aren't able to get out on time, we will be burnt," I said in horror as my tears fell. I'm imagining what could have happened worse if we had stayed there for another couple of minutes.

"Chloe, we should bring him home." Ash interrupted me from my thoughts and I saw a guy lying on the white sand of an island. Ash looked at me with his worried face.

"Is he still alive?" I asked and he nodded.

"Yeah, but I can say that it will take a long hours before he waked up," he said. He should know he's a nursing student. Ashton carries him again with both of his arms. I hopped back to the boat and helped him lay the blonde boy on the flat part of the boat.

"What should we do to him?" I asked, because I really didn't know how we would fit in this small boat. This blonde guy is tall enough to occupy my space.

"Sit on the edge and put his head on your lap," he instructed me, and I frowned.

"What? You can't be serious," I said. He glares at me and I have nothing to do but to follow him. I looked at the blonde boy sleeping in my lap. It's a miracle that he survived. But what if we didn't bother to go to that island? He must be burnt by now. Oh God, he's lucky we did.

The island people were waiting for us and hurriedly met us when they saw us. They all panicked when they saw the blonde boy. Ashton carries him once more and brings him to their house. I saw Miriam.

"Is he still breathing?" she asked nervously. Hell, everyone is nervous.

"Yeah, I hope he will last long. He's not conscious though," I said, and we walked to their house. We saw Ash giving him first aid. Then he tries to treat the wounds on the guy's body.

"He's going to be fine, right?" Miriam asked.

"He just passed out maybe because his head was obviously slammed hard. I don't have any idea, but I know he's alright," Ash said, and I heaved a sigh of relief.

"He can stay in our house until he recovers from what happened," I said and Ash just nodded. I'm sure that if my parents were here right now, they would also offer him our house. I know them very well. I know that they will allow me to let the survivor stay with us. He cannot stay here in Ashton's house because there is not enough space. They have a big family.

"We will transfer him to your place later when your parents arrive. I will visit him from time to time," he said, and I nodded. Ashton has the ability to take good care of that guy. There's only one semester left for him to graduate. He's a smart man with a good internship record, so he can handle anything.
