10. Another Lifetime Ago

I was standing there, chained in iron to a tall wooden beam. There were others around me, and all of us were in chains. I was just a little girl. The white men around us were speaking and shouting in a language I didn't understand. I was scared, but I was trying to put on a brave face for the others. I could feel not only their fear, but their desire to protect me even though they couldn't. None of us could be protected now.

A large white man came and unchained me from the beam before dragging me over to another white man and handing him my chains. The way he looks at me makes me incredibly uncomfortable, so I look away, over at the man with my skin color who is also in chains. I know him, he used to always be in the gardens back home. I go to speak to him, but the white man strikes me across my face and starts yelling at me, but I still have no idea what he is saying since I don't know the language.
