Seeking A Job.

Serene looked up as her ears picked up the sounds of approaching steps, the doctor in his white overall met her inquiring gaze and he gave a slight nod, he walked ahead of her and she immediately followed after.

"How is she feeling now?" She asked the robust doctor who had always attended to her mother as soon as they entered his office, she looked him in the eyes, trying to appear as calm as she can ever be.

"Worse". He expressed with a sigh and looked at me with pity.

Serene nodded, the response was expected and she understood what he meant quite well, as it was until that moment, they had always said that it was hopeless for her mother to ever become better. She would have to be stuck in her delusions until she die.

"Miss, I really don't want to blame you in the past after seeing how relentlessly you have always watched over your mother however, there may have been a little hope if you had brought her here a little earlier" the doctor placed his hands on the table and stared at her calmly.

A flustered glint and a moment of anger flashed through her eyes, she dropped her gaze and pressed her lips together, her waist-length straight hair fell across her shoulder, and strands of the hair littered her face. After a moment, she raised her face and offered a calm smile to the doctor.

"I understand," she stated emotionlessly and looked at the door, "I will visit again some other time, please do what you should," she said and rose from her seat. Without giving the doctor a chance to bid her farewell, she unhurriedly left the office.

Standing by the side of the road, Serene looked listlessly at the busy road ahead of her, her plain face was hidden behind thick-rimmed glasses, her skin had become darker over the year of series of hard labor. She parted her lips and heaved a soft sigh.

Life had been indeed very hard for her...

However, she was just not the kind to give up soon, She clenched her fist and in a flash, she regained her notorious look.

Ding.

Ding.

The notification sound of her phone distracted her from her thoughts. She dug her fingers into her pocket and pulled out her phone, she tapped the screen of her phone impatiently and narrowed her eyes to read the notifications.

'Dear customer, your rent is six months long due, please pay up before the week runs out'

'Dear Candidate, due to lack of competence, you have failed the interview to work at...'

'Daughter, I have run into some troubles, could you please transfer five thousand to me? I swear I will pay you back this time!'

Reading through the first three messages, she really felt the urge to curse and beat up someone, she snorted coldly and tightened her grip on the phone.

Such bad news!

She immediately deleted the messages with irritation. Just as her finger hovered above the last message which was unread, she froze and clicked on it.

'Sister, am I going to die soon? I heard the doctors saying I need the bone marrow transplant urgently. You don't have to pressure yourself anyway, I have lived long enough...'

Her chest tightened and her breathing became difficult, her eyes reddened after she read the message. She was in enough debt that could last her a lifetime already, and even if she wanted to abandon everyone causing her downfall, she never thought of ignoring her little brother.

He was young and innocent, who would have thought he would be diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of seventeen when he was just maturing to be a youth? He was quite smart and had a bright future but everything seem to be unreal now.

Serene could not bother to give up on this brother, she did not exactly love him but she still consider him her only reasonable family member and her responsibility. Now, she realized her little earnings from hard labor would no longer cater to him if she really wanted him to survive.

She clenched her fist, she did not want him to die!

She had applied for a series of jobs recently but was declined by every one of the jobs. She had always lived up to the expectations of her ill luck but now, she simply want to get out of it.

She needed a job, she really wish she can get one... a good one that pays well. But, that was almost impossible in the situation she was in. Even her good luck had reached its limit and it no longer worked for her now.

"Useless..." she hissed and pushed back her thick glasses. She was about to return her cell phone to her pocket when another notification flashed on the screen. Thinking it was another bad luck message, she clicked it open uninterestingly and read through it only to see that it was a message from a familiar number.

'Hey, Rene! I have a piece of good news for you, I think I may have found you a job that will really pay well this time! It was a good friend of mine at work that I heard it from... long story cut short, just come over to P.A.L.S and I will tell you the gist in detail! 8:00 pm sharp, don't make me wait for you, love you!'

"A good job?" Serene mumbled to herself and knitted her brows. To her, the message seemed too exaggerated to be true. She decided to go anyway, she needed a slight distraction after such a long day.

She pocketed her phone and ran her fingers through her hair before putting on an old baseball cap. She picked up her pace and walked until she found herself in the hospital where her brother was admitted.

At the time she came in, the young man was sleeping in the bed, he appeared very sickly and pale, still, his youthful handsomeness cannot be disputed. The smell of disinfectant and drugs assaulted her nose and the sounds of the machines connected to her brother's body hurt her ears.

She was surely a strong girl but at that moment, she simply wanted to cry.

She sat in a corner of the ward and cupped her face. In the absence of any form of comfort, she cried silently...
