“It doesn’t matter,” she said.

“Yeah, Lil.” I pulled back to look her in the eye. “It does. I hate letting you down. I hate knowing that you think I put football above you when the truth is, I would survive if I lost football, but I wouldn’t survive if I lost you.”

“Kaiden.” Her breath caught as she stared up at me with big uncertain eyes.

“I love you, Lily May Ford. I will always love you.”

Lily didn’t reply but she tucked her cheek into my chest and let me hold her as we danced.

When the song finished, and the DJ changed the tempo to something more upbeat we broke apart. “We should probably talk,” I said.

“Later. You’re here now, that’s all that matters.”

Our friends swarmed us, wrapping me and Lily in a group hug. “Knew you’d make it,” Aaron grinned.

“It’s good to see you,” Ezra added.

“Ease up, yeah. You’re crushing Lily.”

“It’s fine.” Her soft laughter was like music to my fucking ears.

“Got you a beer for your troubles,” Bryan handed me the bottle.
