Chapter 91

I had no idea what to do. Running back into the hut, Maverick’s laugher became background noise. Sliding on my knees, I skidded to a stop, right in front of my mom. Her body was cold as ice. “MOM!” I yelled. Shaking her, she did not respond. I didn’t even think before pulling my hand back and slapping her arm across the face. Nothing. She didn’t move or even flinch as my hand made contact with her body.

I looked frantically around, for anything to help. My eyes landed on Dax’s name. Glancing over quickly at Astra, she was still saying an chant. As quietly as I could, I tiptoed my way over to the shelf and uncorked Dax’s vial with shaking hands. The smoke shot out of it. Before it knew it, a ghostly figure that reselmed Dax stood in front of me.

“You have to stop her!” Dax looked at me with urgency.

“How? What do I do?” My heart ached for him. “I could knock the cauldron over but she could just pick it back up again!”

“You can do this. You need to think. Your mother and you joined
Mrs. Smith
