Jovita's POV
"He's here!" Maddie screamed in a shrill voice.
My head snapped in the direction of the entrance door along with many others.
There had been a rumour earlier this week that there was a new Alpha on Foxtown town. He had relocated from Alaska due to a clash with the cold ones; he had killed one of their royals and had been suspended from his pack for two moons to maintain peace.
According to the rumour, he was going to be attending Torin High School, which was my school.
"God, he is so hot!" Anna screamed.
"Cut it out!" Betty snapped at me and my two best friends, Maddie and Anna.
Betty was Maddie’s distant cousin, and the Luna of the most powerful werewolf pack in Foxtown; her family was what you call royalty in the human world.
Rumour had it that Betty had shifted during the spring break, and this had Alphas lining up and waiting, hoping the moon goddess would favour them with such a powerful Luna.
I drew my besties backwards as Betty walked forward to meet the new Alpha; the smile on her face showed that she had claimed him already.
I sighed and pulled at my friends, saying, "Let’s get back to class already," Anna grumbled, making a face.
"What? You know we stand no chance next to Queen Betty.
"But he hasn’t chosen her, and no one said anything about him choosing her," Anna said while Maddie nodded in agreement.
"Come on, guys, it’s a match ordained by the moon goddess herself. Can you ask yourself why the Alpha of a powerful pack relocates to Foxtown town just when an equally powerful and stunning Luna shifts after the long wait?
"It could be just a coincidence, Jovita. Why don’t you see the bright side of things?" Maddie asked with a pout.
"I guess I see the reality," I said, pushing my reluctant friends toward our classroom. "You guys stand a chance anyway, but look at me —I haven’t even shifted yet". "What would he want with me?"
"Everything, Jovita. Maybe he wouldn’t want anything with us, but you’re the most beautiful werewolf I’ve ever seen," Maddie said.
"Stop trying to make me feel good, Maddie.
My friends shifted last summer, the month we turned 18. Coincidentally, our birthdays fell in the same month.
According to tradition, a female werewolf shifts and also finds a mate at 18. But I was 19 already, and nothing!
Anna found her mate the month after our birthdays, while Maddie found hers three months after, and I was left alone, the unlucky and lonely werewolf.
Jovie moves," Anna said, pulling me out of the way. I turned to stare at what or who I was obstructing, and my gaze came to a lock with the new Alpha.
For a moment, I was stunned, and then a wave of excitement hit me as I realized something. I could hear his heartbeat! When a werewolf hears another werewolf’s heartbeat, it means two things: they are either mates, or they are related. And in my case, the latter was the only logical explanation.
Eric, the new alpha, turned to stare at me; the look of surprise on his face showed that he could hear my heartbeat too, but then he turned back to Betty, continuing his walk like I never existed.
My besties noticed the exchange and turned to me for an explanation.
"What?" Anna said, curiosity boldly written on her face.
"I don’t know; I think I heard his heartbeat.
"Woow, Anna, does that mean Jovie has found her mate? But how can that be possible? She hasn’t even shifted yet.
"It happens sometimes," Maddie said. "Sometimes a werewolf fails to shift until they meet their mate, though on rare occasions. It said that the couples become an unbeatable pair.
"That’s not happening, Maddie," I said. "Yeah, he probably heard my heartbeat too, but he looked away uninterested. Who wouldn’t with a Luna like Betty on their arm?
"We don’t choose our mates; the moon goddess does," Maddie said. "Well, I definitely won’t want a mate that won’t want me, no matter how good-looking he is. Let’s go to class, guys.
During lunch break, my besties and I sat around our table, talking about the latest gossip-worthy events that occurred during the summer.
I felt someone watching me, and I turned to see who it was. It was Eric. For a moment, I was flustered. I was used to guys staring at me, but this was different. Why was he staring at me now? he ignored me just a moment ago, I thought.
I tried to steady my breathing, knowing fully well that he could hear my racing heart.
Just then his gaze flickered to something else, and mine followed.
A stunning, hot, handsome guy was walking towards him, and he stood up to meet him.
"OMG! Who the fuck is this hottie!" Maddie screamed. "How many surprises do we get in one day?"
All heads turned to stare at the newcomer. He was dazzling, I mean, literally dazzling. He was tall and well-built, with a shock of long ebony-black hair that fell across his shoulders, complimenting his tanned skin. The air around him spoke of authority and power.
Eric said something to him, and he turned toward my table, a slow smile spreading on his face.
"What were they talking about?" I mumbled, trying to stop my racing heartbeat.
Jayden’s POVI looked around at the strange faces as I drove into Foxtown. I was meant to come a day earlier with my cousin and best friend Eric, but I had a few issues to sort out, so I asked him to go before me.Instead of going home from the airport, I decided to drive straight to Torin High School to meet him.On getting there, I was told the students were having lunch already and directed to the cafeteria. When I walked in, the whole room turned to stare at me, but I continued my search for Eric unbothered; I was used to people throwing admiring stares.Just as my eyes fell on Eric, I cut the scent of something familiar other than Eric’s scent, and I felt my body react with excitement. _She’s here,_ the voice in my head whispered."Hey man," Eric said, coming to hug me; he must have perceived my scent."My flight was delayed, otherwise I’d have arrived earlier". "How is your first day at school going?""Not bad. I’m popular with the boys already, I got the girls drooling, and thi
Jovita's POV"Hi, Mimoh,” I said to my grandma as I entered our family's pottery store.“Jovie,” she said with a bright smile, hugging me.My Mimoh was my best friend after Anna and Maddie. She knew all of my secrets. When she was younger, she ruled the Grey pack and fought many battles for our clan. It's said that she was fearless as a lion and sly as a wolf.Staring at her little form right now made me laugh, from a wolf to a puppy, I thought with a chuckle.Thump!!!“Mimoh!” I screamed as a firm, old hand hit my back.“Oh, so you're making fun of me in your head, forgetting that I can hear your thoughts. I'm going to break that tiny back of yours, turnover.”I twisted out of her arm and fled the store; the old woman could be a lion again when she was offended.“I'd go see if Mrs. Brittany is done with the jar; I'd be back soon,” I screamed.“You better not return today.”“I will, ma. Bye, Mimoh.”I started down the road that led to Mrs. Brittany's store, then changed my mind and he
Jayden's POV"He has fled downtown; he probably got wind of our arrival. I think he's currently taking refuge in the woods,” Eric said.I turned to the white Brothers. “Are there houses close to the woods?”“Yes, from what I know, Jovita's house is quite close to the woods. I think there is a house or two a few miles from hers,” Seth replied.“You know Jovita's house?” I asked.“Yes,” Seth replied simply, a look of surprise spreading on his beautiful face. His hair was held back in a ponytail, highlighting his features.“Okay,” I said. I quickly shook the thoughts of her off, knowing Seth and Eric could hear my thoughts.Eric threw me a knowing glance. “I'd watch over her house and the surrounding houses while you run,” he said.Relief washed through me. “Sure, the rest of us will… Don't worry about Jovita, Eric. I'll take care of her,” Seth intercepted.I turned to stare at Eric, communicating with my eyes. He looked at me helplessly, not knowing what to say. Seth stared at both of
Jovita's POV"I swear I heard a roar last night,” I said to my friends. We had just ended the day’s classes, and I was telling them about my encounter from last night. I heard sounds outside my house and opened my window to check the source, but there was nothing outside.Just as I was about to close my window, I heard a low roar behind the tree next to my window. Terrified, I quickly shut my window and went back to bed.“What do you think it was?” Anna asked, looking pale.“Maybe a wolf-vampire,” Maddie mumbled.“I'm not talking about my encounter with Jayden, Maddie. Besides, I thought we dropped the wolf-vampire nonsense.”“But what if he came back to haunt you for being rude to him? Or maybe he likes you,” Maddie said, her eyes twinkling.“What's up with Maddie? What wolf-vampire did you encounter, Jovie?” Anna asked, staring from Maddie to me.“I think Maddie is possessed by a wolf vampire,” I mumbled.“What?” Anna shrieked.“And that wolf-vampire is in love with Jovita,” Maddie
Jayden’s POVI sighed as I packed my black bike by the side of Foxtown’s beach. It was one out of the only two beaches in Foxtown. It has come to be my favourite hangout spot over the past four weeks since my arrival.I watched the waves crashing, and the wind blowing. Sometimes it was slow and tranquil, other times it was fierce and vigorous. I loved to swim on days when it was fierce, it was more of a challenge for me, something I did for fun.I proceeded to find my favourite tree where I usually lodged, taking a full view of the lovely, empty beach. I was told the folks here avoided this particular beach, and frequented the other, as they believe the ghost of a cold one, killed thousands of years ago by a great white, still lingered. I found the story implausible and stupid when Eric narrated it to me.I was just about to turn towards the path leading to my tree when I heard a low shuffling sound, my head snapped towards the direction it came from. I knew I was walking among tre
Jovita's POVI looked at Jayden perplexed, wondering what he meant by his question.“I should be the one asking that question”, I retorted. He looked at me, his brows set in conviction.I still couldn't wrap my head around whatever it was, he was insinuating.I turned to go, deciding to ignore him, as I wasn't in the mood for company, but he grabbed my hands and wheeled me to face him.As our gazes locked, turquoise in fiery hazel eyes, I felt a sensation rush through me. “He is the one”, a voice in my head whispered. Ordinarily, I would have chastised myself for my negative thoughts, but at the moment, I stood, transfixed.I tried pulling away but he held me back, his eyes glowing with determination.“What do you want from me? I'm just an ordinary she-wolf, maybe a little below ordinary as I haven't even wolfed out yet”, I said angrily. More like a bit angry, because his hazel eyes kept me transfixed and his sweet smell was sending signals to my brain, and my poor heart was beating
Jayden's POVI stood by the hallway with the White Brothers. We were talking about the clue we discovered that could lead us to Uriel’s hideout. Many girls gave me flashy smiles as they passed my group, but I ignored them. My mind was Jovita. I had been thinking about her all day.Seth threw me another angry glance, and I ignored it. He was pissed. He had picked up my thoughts about Jovita, and he was not pleased with it, but I didn't care.I got to know from Eric that he was into Jovita, ignoring his fated mate. Knowing Jovita wasn't his mate put me at ease, at least I only had a few options to sieve through, but it hadn't answered the question of whether or not she was my mate.I was anxiously waiting for that answer as today was a full moon, a time when werewolves wolfed out, and met their mates. If Jovita and I were mates, we were bound to meet today, even if she hadn't wolfed out yet.A part of me was strongly convinced she was my mate due to the strong attraction I felt towards
Jovita's POVI stared at the huge, white, beast in front of me, terrified. If I had looked away for a second, I would have sworn with the last fur on my body, though I was yet to have a single fur talk more of a last fur, that the beautiful, large, white, angry beast in front of me was Jayden. He stared past me, his eyes focused on his mortal enemy, Uriel. Uriel stared back his amber eyes glowing in the dark, his posture motionless and ice-cold. He looked unreal.I still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that my childhood best friend was here in Foxtown. I had lived in California for a while before my family relocated to Foxtown. Uriel and I had attended the same preschool and bonded over the years until I left California. The last time I saw him was 14 years ago. What was he doing here in Foxtown, and what was he doing here in the woods at this hour? From the last I could remember, he was a human. He had grown into a very attractive young man, and standing there in the shadow of
