Chapter 21

Jason was running across the cemetery, following the lure of the ring Tiara had given him. He couldn’t explain exactly how, but the ring seemed to be leading him toward her. If he changed direction, the light of the ring would dim until he turned back in the right direction.

Before long he could see tell-tale signs of Zachary’s work. One whole area of the cemetery was a smoldering expanse of… nothing. There were dips in the ground where trees had been burned right down to their roots and the places where grave markers had stood where nothing but small holes.

The sight Tiara had given let him see the souls hovering over what would have been their graves. Some of them looked like small clouds of mist while others were full-bodied apparitions. They would turn their heads to look at him before looking back in the direction he was traveling.

Jason stopped running for a moment to get some sense of direction when the soul of a little boy appeared in front of h
