Chapter 5

3 years later

Monsters aren't born, they're created. They're not the ones hiding under the bed, they're the ones inside you. They're created from the pain of one's heart, the pain is what's turned into darkness.

Little by little, the darkness grows and overpowers one's mind, body and soul, making someone it's personal bitch. It's exactly what happened to her. A monster was created from the innocence she once had, the innocence taken and made into madness.

Over the years, she fully processed what had happened to her, what her ex did to her. She became fully aware and became curious too. What was this thrill her ex got from killing, from murdering. She never found out herself but that didn't mean she wasn't curious.

However, as well as the storm raging in her mind, Eden had a storm around her too. This was her second to last year in university and she had to graduate. There was just one small issue. She could no longer afford to.

Eden began her studies on a scholarship, she didn't want to tell her family about her money problems, by family she means Eric since she didn't have her parents, and if she doesn't pay rent by the end of this month, she would lose her apartment. So yes, Eden was knee deep in a load of shit.

She had taken on a job a few months back, just a simple cashier in a convenience store, and it got her food, but it wasn't enough for both university and a roof over her head. She barely got time to study anymore.

The empty bench she sat on was cold from the snow of late December, Eden's nose was red as well as her eyes. She couldn't help but cry in frustration. What was she supposed to do? She wasn't about to ask Eric for help, and she wasn't in contact with her parents anymore. She hasn't been for the past 7 years, ever since they found out she discovered she was adopted, and her father wasn't her biological father. It caused problems with the couple as the father himself didn’t know that she wasn't his daughter. She was then disowned.

She didn't know what else to do anymore. Her mind was a war, and she couldn't take it anymore. She screamed. She screamed so loud letting out pent up frustration and anger. Thankfully, the park was empty, and it was almost 2am. Eden didn't know how long she'd been sitting outside counting her uncountable problems.

"Damn, are you okay? You're probably not with how you just screamed your lungs out, but yeah. You, okay?" Eden heard a sudden deep voice, and she looked up and blinked away her tears.

And she was in awe. The first thing that came to her mind was 'holy shit'. In front of her stood a man who was wearing full black, he had his hands in his coat and a mask was on his face. He had black hair that seemed messily styled and onyx black eyes.

Those eyes were strong but silent and Eden couldn't help but be drawn in. They looked dark and evil but also like they held entire universes. They were dominating, demanding, like he'd bring hell if you disobeyed him. And that's what had Eden staring.

"W-who are you?" Eden asked, her cries now little sniffles as she calmed down. The man then sat down beside her on the bench.

"I'm... someone who might be able to help you." That was the vaguest answer one could ever give.

"How?" Eden asked and the man smirked beneath his mask.

"I can offer you something. It's something that would earn you millions, but you would lose a little too. Maybe your sanity but, that's your choice of course." Malakai offered and knew Eden would accept. He never stopped watching her. And she had changed.

"Again, who are you? And tell me clearly." Eden demanded. She gets annoyed at cryptic words, why can't a person just say what they want to say.

"To kill, to murder, to be a criminal. I've been watching you Eden for a little while, I feel like you're perfect for the job." Eden furrowed her eyebrows. A normal person would probably run at that moment, but she didn’t.

"That's not creepy at all." She mumbled sarcastically and Malakai let out a little chuckle and stood.

"Follow me, let's talk in more detail." Normally Eden would never follow a stranger, she use to be scared for her life but that's the key word. Use to. Eden was no longer scared. She would never be scared anymore. And she was desperate.

"You can trust me." And a stupid little part of Eden did. It was shocking because Eden had trust issues.

They walked silently side by side in the dark, Eden still hadn't asked why the man was outside in this weather at 2am but he was probably doing the same thing as her.

After a short while, they arrived at a building that was quite big to be honest. It seemed like it had at least 10 stories and it looked like an office building. Malakai and Eden walked through, and Eden unknowingly went through a detector for any weapons. Malakai had his gun on him, but the detector was set to not pick up his weapons.

The detector would pick up the weapons of the agents, if you want to call them that, who will take them off, they'd be scanned and given back to them. It was almost like airport security.

The two walked into Malakai's office who took his coat off and motioned Eden to make herself comfortable on the couch Kai had situated in the room.

"So, as I mentioned earlier, I hire people to kill. Call them agents if you want. They follow my orders, whatever they are, and get paid for it." Malakai explained and Eden nodded, a memory coming to her.

"Is something wrong?" Malakai asked, seeing Eden's sad expression.

"My ex did this. He also killed for money, and I broke up with him because of it." Of course, Malakai knew that. Alec still works for him.

"Why?" He asked

"I was scared. Scared he would hurt me; I don't know, I just felt generally unsafe around him." That was news to Malakai, although he wasn't surprised.

"And now?" Eden thought about the past. The reason she broke up with Alec.
