Chapter 6- The promise of love

Camilla’s POV

I went up to my room and slammed the door behind me. Just as I went in, I heard a knock on my bedroom door.

I knew from the scent that it was Leo. I wanted to turn him away, but it wouldn’t be nice.

“Come in,” I called out. The door opened and he came in, smiling at me.

“Hey!” He said.

“Hi,” I responded. We probably were behaving like teenagers. I was shy, but he seemed bold enough to approach me.

“Can I sit?” He asked.

“Sure,” I responded, and he sat on my bed.

“Look, I know it’s awkward, but I want to apologize for what my mother said in the dining room,” he apologized, just as I had expected.

“It’s fine. One can be judged by saying how they should feel,” I answered.

“No, what she did was wrong, and I wouldn’t stand for it. You must have had a misunderstanding with your mate, and that's fine. It’s not in her place to judge you,” he responded, and I knew he was a sensible wolf.

“What can I say? Thanks,” I responded. We sat there awkwardly for what seemed like an eternity.

“So… about the mate bond, I hope you’re not overwhelmed. I promise to give you all the love and commitment a wolf should give his mate, if you would have me,” he said. But I knew I wasn’t ready. Other wolves would fall into each other's arms and may even mate the same time they found themselves, but that isn’t me.

“I want this, and I need this bond. But I have to think of my son and everything that is going on in my life. Let’s take it slow. I had just picked up my life here, and it seemed impossible to move now. And Marcel, I can’t leave him. He loves it here and…” I rambled on about my worries, and he reached out to hold my hands. Sparks flew from his touch, and I held back a moan.

“It’s okay. Your father already told me not to rush you, and I completely understand. You will come when you’re ready. I wouldn’t try to force you,” he said, and I looked at him with adoration. Father must have spoken to him, which left me with the question of how much he knows. But I know it wouldn’t be nice to ask him that, so I appreciated him.

“Thank you,” I whispered, and he took my hands to his lips and gave it a kiss.

“If you don’t mind me asking, why did you reject your mate?” I asked out of curiosity. His mother had mentioned it, and I was curious enough to ask.

“I didn’t reject her, she rejected me,” he replied, and I looked at him in shock. No she-wolf would be stupid enough to reject him. He wasn’t any ordinary wolf but an Alpha. And he wasn’t lacking in looks either.

“What happened?” I asked. I could see his brow furrowed, and I could see him getting angry. He seemed lost in thought.

“Look, I’m sorry about it. You can keep it to yourself if you want,” I said, and I could see him shake his head.

“No, I would tell you soon enough, but not today,” he responded, and I nodded. I felt like we had both been hurt by our ex-mates. The topic of his old mate changed his mood.

“It’s cool, I understand,” I replied.

Soon after that, we exchanged small talk, and he ended up making me laugh. We exchanged numbers, and he retired for the night.

The next morning came, and I called Erica and told her I would skip today for work and also informed her to call Revana to start the following day. Father told me that morning that Leo and his family had left earlier that morning, and Leo promised to give me a call.

The rest of the day I had spent it with my son, and by evening, I wished him goodbye as I traveled back to the city for work the next day.

The next day, I was in my office when Revana walked in. She had started her work as my personal assistant, and I had briefed Erica on what to be done with her.

“Oh, Revana, what brings you to my office?” I asked her.

“I’m sorry, but there are a lot of files to attend to, and Erica informed me to get them ready by tomorrow. Will it be possible if I drop some?” She asked.

“No, those files need to be delivered tomorrow. You would have to review all of them,” I said, and I could see her frown, not that I cared.

“But that would mean I need to work all night,” she replied.

“Then do it, or you can quit if the job doesn’t suit your station. Here, we work hard, and we don’t feel redundant in our job,” I said, and I could see her frown. I said that I didn't care if she quit.

I had informed Erica to give her twice the workload of the job. I wanted to make it hard for her here, and so far, it was going well.

I wasn’t going to kill her, but I was going to make her time miserable here. I knew something was fishy in her story. There was no way she had come here to work just like that. Enzo must have pushed her out.

“This is unfair. Erica told me my duty is to attend to every one of the other workers here. This is not the job description, but it’s more like slavery,” she cried out, and I scoffed.

“Your mate is an Alpha. You can quit. I’m sure your pack will provide for you as Luna,” I replied.

“You don’t understand them. Alpha Enzo doesn’t…” She said, and I could see sorrow in her eyes.

“Alpha Enzo, what?” I asked.

“I’m sorry I lied to you, but I am not the Luna of my pack,” she whispered as she bowed her head shamefully.

“What!!!!” I screamed at the top of my voice as I stood up from my seat.
