Chapter 5: Vicky

Kent dropped me off at the off-campus apartment that I rented with my roommate, Juan Wang. My hair disheveled and my clothes ripped. After everything happened today, I am so exhausted that I just want to sneak quietly into my room and tuck myself in. But the door swings open, and Juan Wang is the living room.

“Emm, you are still up? Thank for getting the door for me BTW.” I am totally beaten, but I try to put up a friendly face and make a small talk.

“No problem.” Juan Wang yarns, darting her eyes from her phone to me. “Are you OK? I heard some shit happened at Mason Hall. If you weren’t getting home safe, I am just about calling the cops, girl.”

I am moved by the fact that she stayed up so late to make sure I am home safe.

I smile briefly. “I am OK, don’t worry. Thank you for being so sweet.”

“Don’t sweat about it.” She plays it cool. “It’s not like I went an extra mile to make sure you safe. I got my own shit to mind.”

“Right, it’s the final week. Are you up to cram for tests?” I
