Part Thirty-One
Lee Munroe stood in line as the Dean of the University called out names. It was graduation day and he had finally completed his law degree. Marella sat in the audience with David, Cecile, Blaire and Blain. Behind them sat Mason with Grace on his lap and Kelley next to him, both of them looking as proud as could be.David and Cecile were still annoyed because the twins had opted not to go college but had started working for Kelley’s company straight out of high school. Lee hadn’t commented because the twins did valuable work for them, work that David and Cecile didn’t have to know about.“Lee Munroe, Summa Cum Laude.”Lee stepped forward as the Dean shook his hand, handed him a scroll and he smiled for the photographer. He had graduated in the top five percent of his class and he already had two job offers in St. John’s City.He walked across the stage and took his seat again. The valedictorian, a girl named Sue-Anne Maloney, gave her speech and then they clapped politely. They left th

Kelley stood in the foyer of his childhood home, now his home and left his suitcases right there as his phone rang. He fished it from the inside pocket of his jacket and looked at the name highlighted on his screen.“Hello, Charles.”“We need to talk. You went too far this time, Kelley!”“With what exactly? I’ve been quite busy the last few weeks.”Kelley could hear the irritation in Charles’s voice and he had to smile. He loved irking the old man. “Are you still in St. John’s City?”“No, I’m in town.”“Where are you?”“My house on the hill overlooking my new kingdom.”Charles’s intake of breath was audible and Kelley waited patiently for him to recover from the shock of that news. “I’ll come to you.”The line went dead and Kelley grinned as he pocketed his phone again. It would be an enlightening conversation. Approaching footsteps made the grin disappear and his features returned to stoic as the man stopped in front of him.“We’ve cleared the house, no bugs and no cameras. Your secu

Part Thirty-Three
Kelley sat at a round table in a private room in Razz and waited for Ernesto Romano. He had opted to come alone although Connor was never far. He was Kelley’s personal bodyguard and sometimes he blended in so well that even Kelley couldn’t spot him.The door slid to the side and the hostess appeared with a man behind her. “Your table, Mr Romano.”Kelley stood up as the man walked past the hostess. She smiled and disappeared from view, the door sliding closed again. “Mr Romano, Kelley Alexander.” They shook hands and the man pulled out one of the chairs and sat down, so Kelley sat as well.“Your lawyer doesn’t take no for an answer.”Kelley smiled at the thought of Lee browbeating this man. “He’s good at his job.”“I find it hard to believe that Charles told you about the arranged marriage.”Ernesto was pure Italian, average in height and weight with an air of arrogance. His olive toned skin was scarred across his cheeks and his black hair was oiled back. Kelley got the idea that this

Part Thirty-Four
By Wednesday Kelley realized that Ernesto had never given him the name of the Romano daughter he’d marry. Blaire’s initial searches turned up five Romano daughters living in Ernesto’s household. Two of the girls had been adopted after his brother had died. The first one was Fernanda, aged twenty-one. She was a beautiful young woman but something about her didn’t feel right to Kelley. She looked spoiled, pampered and shallow. Her hobbies included shopping, getting her nails done and pouting for selfies. The second daughter was Milana, aged eighteen. The smile on the photograph seemed timid, almost shy and she didn’t share her older sister’s beauty, though, she wasn’t ugly. Her face was innocent, too young and Kelley almost felt bad for her.Kelley dropped the folder on his desk and realized that within two days he’d be a married man. Marella had organized a small ceremony at a chapel with a pastor he’d never met and didn’t know. Afterwards they’d come back to the house for a small rece

Lee sat in his car in the driveway of his house. Marella was inside, probably looking at takeout menus and trying to decide what to order for dinner. His heart rate had calmed, the adrenaline having worked out of his system in what felt like seconds.Seeing Keith in that warehouse, looking so smug had done a number on him. He hadn’t felt that type of rage in years, had worked so hard to bury it all. He had no idea what the hell he was doing. He’d left Kelley to deal with the aftermath of his rage and he felt guilty as hell.‘I’ve got you, Lee.’ He heard Kelley’s voice in his head.‘Yeah, you’ve always got everyone, Kelley,’ he thought grimly to himself. ‘But who’s got your back?’ It was one of the reasons why he’d studied law, to give back, to help protect those who couldn’t protect themselves.Lee opened the front door and found Marella on the couch with a staggering number of takeout menu’s on the coffee table. He needed that type of normal now. Marella looked up at him, the smile o

“Who’s Basilio Giudice?”Kelley looked up from where he was fastening his cufflinks as Lee leaned in the doorway looking like himself again. Kelley hadn’t heard from him until now, Friday morning.“Why do you ask, Lee?”“Because I find it ironic that an unknown Italian businessman has just started buying up everything in the upper districts that we don’t already own.” Kelley smiled and Lee shook his head. “You did it again, asshole. Why can’t you just tell us before you go off and do shit?”“Shit’s a bad word, Uncle Lee.”“Gracie! Don’t say shit.” Mason shot a glare at Lee and Kelley smiled as Grace bounded up to him.“Hello, princess. You look beautiful.”“Thank you, Uncle Kelley, you look pretty too.”Mason stifled a laugh and Lee raised his eyebrow as Kelley picked her up and turned back to the mirror. Grace traced Kelley’s tie with her finger and then kissed him on the cheek and smiled her toothless smile at him.“That’s not something you hear in the same sentence, ever.” Mason’s

Kelley straightened up as the inner doors of the chapel opened and he clasped his hands in front of him as a woman appeared with a small bouquet of flowers in front of her. Kelley recognized her as Fernanda, the older sister. She was even more beautiful in person but Kelley saw past that. She wore too much make-up and her dress was too tight, revealed too much cleavage and her heels were ridiculous in the chapel, essentially a holy place.Kelley looked past her and the two other sisters that followed and he exhaled the breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding when Ernesto came into view and on his arm, his bride. The music softened and slowed as they entered the chapel.Lee and Mason stood behind him and he caught Carey’s gaze. Her eyes held love and pride and she smiled encouragingly at him. Kelley smiled back at her and then Ernesto was right in front of him. Ernesto gripped his hand tightly and Kelley cringed inwardly at the sweaty feel.“Who gives this woman to this man?” The p

Lee closed the front door behind him softly, the entryway dark and the living room beyond it too. He stood at the bottom of the stairs, knowing he had to talk to Marella but dreading the outcome of the conversation. “You came home.” Lee looked up at Marella standing at the head of the stairs in her pajamas. She looked younger with her hair down and the make-up rubbed from her face. One hand had inadvertently gone to her flat stomach and Lee swallowed the rising bile away. “We should talk.” “I’m really tired, Lee, and I’m just glad you’re home.” Lee’s heart broke a little as he took the steps slowly towards her. She reached out her hand and he took it, followed her back into their bedroom and sat down on the edge of the bed. Marella sat down next to him and her hand found his cheek. “I can’t do this, Marella.” “Do what?” “It’s me or the baby. I can’t give you both. I … I lo … You’re my whole life, Marella, but a life with me is without children.” “Why, Lee? I don’t understand.

Kelley rushed up the stairs after Milana, who had spun on her heel after her last statement and power walked away from him and Connor. He heard Connor’s laugh from the living room and silently swore the man laughing at his predicament.“Milana … wait.”“Yes, Mr Alexander?”Milana had stopped walking and turned around so fast that Kelley almost walked right into her. The momentum was too great and he grabbed her shoulders, crashing her against the wall next to her bedroom door.“Sorry.”Milana looked up at him, swallowed nervously and then looked down. “It’s okay.”She twisted out of his arms and walked into her bedroom. It was neat, the bed made up and her suitcases unpacked. On the side table was a framed picture of a dog. Milana stopped halfway into the room then turned to look at him.“What you saw last night …”“Has nothing to do with me.”“I’m not a cheater, Milana. She was emotional and her hormones are all over the place.”“You really don’t have to explain your extra curricular

People rarely knocked on Kelley’s study door. Lee and Mason would just walk in and Connor cleared his throat right before walking in. If he needed privacy he’d lock the door, at least that’s what he told Mason when he asked about walking in on something he’d rather not see.The knock on his study door came again, a bit harder this time and Kelley stood up from behind his desk with annoyance. He yanked the door open ready to lay in to whoever it was since he’d made it clear to the staff that he didn’t want anyone near the study.Kelley blinked and relaxed his stance. Milana’s eyes found his and then she lowered her gaze. She held the schedule in her hands and Kelley looked her up and down. Her shoes were worn, her denim frayed at the ends and the t-shirt she wore a little washed out.“I didn’t mean to disturb you. I mean … you said the study was off limits … I’ll just go.”“Milana, wait.”She stopped halfway in her turn but didn’t turn back, her hand now clutching the schedule like she
