Chapter 31: The Ride Home
Protecting anyone was the same anywhere and in any time period. Always know what you were going into and always have an escape route. They could go back into the elevator. They could run up the stairwell and as Sean glanced out, he saw an exit. Three ways out. He didn't see anyone lurking around. "Which one is your car?""The gray Mercedes."He looked around for a gray car and hoped that was the one. "To the left?""Yes."He glanced around again then ushered her out of the elevator. The car beeped then unlocked. He held open the driver's door for her. She glanced at him. "I'm driving?""Yes. I can keep an eye on the surroundings better that way." She paused as if she was going to question him, then climbed into the car. He closed the door, looked around again then rushed around the car. He hopped into it."Are we good to go?" she said."Aye. Let's go."She started the car then pulled out of the space. They were into traffic in a few minutes. Sean looked around the whole time. He didn

Chapter 32: Asking Questions
"It's safer if there's more than one of us," Sean said. She nodded, not knowing much about being protected. She'd never been in danger before. "You're from Ireland?""Aye. County Galway.""I was just there.""Oh?""Yes. Leenane. Such a pretty part of the world."He rose and put his plate in the sink. "You need me to wash it?""No. I can do it later.""You did cook for me."She waved a hand. "No. I'll do it. Besides, the maid will be in tomorrow. I can leave it for her."He tilted his head slightly then stood in the kitchen as if he had no idea what to do next. "Is my apartment secure?""Yes."He was a large man, taking up most of the space on that side of the island. Colleen waved a hand towards her television. "Feel free to watch if you want."He put up a large hand. "I don't watch.""As you saw I have a second bedroom. You didn't bring any clothing with you?""I'll get it later. I'll be fine with what I have now," he said. His expression never changed and she was once again reminded

Chapter 33: She Gets to Work
Donal answered this one. "When he does something more to reveal himself, but don't worry, you are safe no matter where you are. We have people in your office besides Sean."Colleen bobbed her head then looked out the window again. Sean wanted to convince her that he was an expert at protecting fairies, but that would require her to know who she was. He and Donal exchanged a look in the rearview mirror. Donal wanted her to know as soon as possible because he'd almost died before he told Meg what she was. Meg had ultimately embraced her fairyhood. Would Colleen be so open-minded? Donal pulled into the underground garage at Colleen's law firm. He stopped by the elevator. "Your firm has gone to a lot of trouble to keep you safe. We're good at what we do and you are in good hands with Sean."Colleen nodded as she jumped out of the car. Sean followed her into the elevator. "Will he drive us home?""Someone will. Most likely a different vehicle."This was all more complicated than before he

Chapter 34: Ride Home
Colleen laughed. "I guess it does. This protection is temporary. My life and happiness in it is more long term.""I guess we aren't going to solve any of your problems here." He lowered his gaze, looking at the top of her head. She could see him reflected in the glass wall behind them. She didn't argue. She just followed him out to the elevator. "The driver is here?""I sent a text as soon as O'Shannon left," Sean said. She studied his profile as they rode down to the parking garage. Once again, she was reminded of stone. Some artist had chiseled this man's jaw. Something about him drew her in a way she'd never experienced. Is this what women said when they met the one? The man they were supposed to marry? She searched her brain for what Meg had said about Donal. "What?" he stopped for a second. "You're staring at me."Had she been anyone else, she might have blushed, but she had never been shy about her interested in a man. "I just think you're attractive."He blinked. "Okay." He tur

Chapter 35: Her Wish
Colleen stepped closer to him and he was powerless to move away. It was as if she had used magic to enchant him. He'd have to ask Donal if that was possible. She stood on her tiptoes, her lips inches from his. "I've made a wish for you."He took in her gorgeous green eyes, now a little darker. "Oh?"Then as if a hand had pushed his head closer to hers, he kissed her. His hands, of their own accord, dug into her hair, keeping her close to deepen the kiss. When he came up for air, he didn't feel as if he'd made a mistake. "Did you wish for that?""I wished that you wanted to kiss me." She stepped away, his hands letting her go and he felt the loss to his soul. "And you did. Maybe there is something to this wishing thing."She turned away and walked to the kitchen. Had the kiss not affected her? His heart raced and his body was on fire. Damn. This wasn't good. He didn't lose control normally. She looked at him from the doorway to the kitchen, an innocent smile curving her lips. "Lunch?

Chapter 36: That Talk
"There's something else I have to talk to you about.""That sounds serious."Sean swallowed hard. "It is serious, Colleen. I need you to listen with an open mind.""Are you going to talk me out of defending O'Shannon? I don't want to hear it if you are."Sean shook his head, his gaze going to her. "No, Colleen." I licked my lips. "Remember when I asked if you had ever wished for someone else to get to something and they did?""Yes and I've been thinking about it and I may have some instances that it happened."Okay. That made this a little easier. "So you do recall that happening?""Yes, but like I said, I'm kind of selfish."Sean smiled at her. "Were they things that person would have gotten anyway or was it most likely they weren't?" She looked away from him then back. "They weren't likely to get them. That's why I remember them. These are situations I hadn't thought about in years.""You haven't done it recently?""No, Sean. I've been focused on myself. It's just who I am. Meg and

Chapter 37: Pointed Questions
Colleen slid the plate of bacon in front of him. He snagged a piece then took a bite of it. She watched as he chewed it. "Because I'm very good at my job and that brought money into the firm. They didn't want me to lose focus."He nodded. The toast popped up and she buttered it. Her stomach was empty, but she didn't feel like eating. "So you've never given your services for free?""No. Not since my first year out of law school.""Maybe that's what you need to do. When this is all over."She nodded. "I guess until then I have to work on this O'Shannon case." Deciding she couldn't work on an empty stomach, she nabbed a slice of bacon. "Thank you for listening.""You're welcome. I don't have much to do when you're home so I don't mind."She nodded. "Is there a girlfriend?""No, lass. I've had no time."She tucked away that information for later. ***Colleen sequestered herself in her bedroom to work on the case. Sean made her promise that she wouldn't leave the apartment. He had an erra

Chapter 38: Her Case Again
Colleen surfaced from her research into O'Shannon's case and wandered into her kitchen. Sean entered the apartment from the deck, out of breath. What had he been doing out there? He was buttoning up his shirt. How long had he been out there? She poured herself a glass of water then drank it, watching him walk towards her. He was the most attractive man she'd ever seen. Under different circumstances, she'd jump him, but now she didn't want to see him. Not that way. Oh, no. She could so easily be distracted by him."Colleen. I have something to talk to you about."She put down her now-empty glass on the counter and cocked her head. "What happened while you were gone?"He shrugged. "Not important. Yet.""Go ahead.""I don't know how to ease you into this so I'm just going to say it.""Okay," Colleen said. She crossed her arms, waiting for whatever revelation would come out of his mouth. She hoped he wouldn't be disappointed when she asked for a different bodyguard. He was too distracting

Chapter 39: Goblins Arrive
Up in Donal's study, Sean straightened. He heard Colleen's scream. It went through to his soul. The fairy he was supposed to protect was in trouble. The flapping of wings sent his gaze out the window looking into the darkness. "He's got her."Donal frowned. "Why was she outside and how did that goblin get past my defenses?"Sean was already out the window and onto the ledge. He lifted his head and scented Colleen. She wasn't screaming so she must have passed out. He could only imagine what it would be like to be snatched from the ground and flown away. His wings unfurled and he took flight in the direction of her scent. He couldn't hide himself so he'd just have to live with whatever consequences there were for him to be flying over the suburbs. At least it was dark out. The goblin headed for the river. Where was he taking her?"If you need help, let me know," Donal said in Sean's head.Colleen was his responsibility. He was supposed to protect her and he'd failed. He'd tried to do th

Chapter 40: He Transforms
Sean chuckled. "I'm in gargoyle form. Let me get out of it."She hadn't even noticed the scales on him until that moment. She released his arm, but couldn't see what was happening. "Sean?" Donal said as he walked toward them from out of the darkness. "I brought a bag for the goblin."Sean moved away from her. "Donal will take care of the goblin corpse.""What will I tell my firm?" Colleen said."You know nothing about O'Shannon's death. Besides, he has a lot of enemies. His body will be found washed up on the shore somewhere."Sean's firm, human, hand took hers and pulled her to her feet and into his arms. She buried her face in his chest, her heart only just returning to normal. She'd need some time to process all of this. "I'll take you home.""Flying?""No. Donal drove here. Meg's waiting in the truck.""Take me home then."***Colleen woke the next morning in her bed. Alone. She remembered that day that she'd picked up Meg from her office. Now she understood it all. "You're awake
